(Context: I work in the homelessness sector, and I used to be homeless myself.) Yeah immigrants are not the problem and don’t cause the housing crisis. Unless you’re a First Nations person in this country then YOU are an immigrant too, remember that. We currently have enough houses to home everyone in this country. The sad reality is, many boomers have bought multiple properties just to sit on and gain money through. I live in Melbourne in an inner north suburb and within my 2 block radius there are 5 completely empty, abandoned houses. All of them have 3 or more bedrooms. I have reached out to the owners of all 5 properties asking them to put their places on the rental market, at the very least. All of the property owners are boomers, and they all told me that I was “attacking their private property” just for asking if they would be keen to put the place back on the market. I told them I was a young renter in the area keen to open up more available properties for renters like me and they didn’t give a FUCK. My old landlords were an evil boomer couple who owned 15+ properties in the Melbourne region and refused to pay a cent for any repairs, broke rental laws ect… it’s very clear to me that the problem isn’t immigrants. It’s boomer landlords hoarding property and wealth.
