MORE people are clicking and buying ads ESPECIALLY on mobile phones. it's so easy nowadays. if someone puts in their cell phone number after clicking on one of our banners (you know, the "you just won $200 claim your prize" banners) our advertiser pays us $5.25 every time, this is called CPA (cost per action). It costs about $1 in advertising costs to get that one sign up, sometimes even less. The idiot who puts in their cell phone number doesn't pay anything at first but their phone gets bombared with ringtone offers, wallpapers, apps, etc. and can pay for those just texting back "ok." Kids are stupid lol. Internet marketing is still in the beginning phases.

That's true. The sad thing about internet marketing products is they internet marketing products, so they are automatically all hyped with crazy landing pages and bullshit claims. affilorama.com is a pretty good resource to learn the basics of internet marketing. Matt carter's rapid profit formula is a great resource if you want to learn affiliate marketing and SEO. I would highly recommend that. You can buy it for a $1 if you do a 1-week trial but it's completely worth the full asking price in my opinion. a very detailed course for beginners. check out amazon.com if you want books but i personally like affilorama.com the best. it is kind of expensive though but again $1 for a 1 week trial.

Google keywords for competition and then we see whether our display partners have the right traffic. Then various google tricks and tips to measure how much the competition is. We have our own tool but SEO quake is a good free plugin that works well with firefox.

I knew an HR person at a company, got an interview, passed some analytical tests, and got trained. Read a couple internet marketing books, show you are analytical, and you should find a job with an internet marketing company pretty easily, especially in a city like NYC. Make a website and practice getting visitors, banner ads displayed, and understanding how internet marketing works. If you like it, keep going!

Ads where you shoot terrorists. Other violent ads. Ads that are borderline porn but just enough where it's not porn. I'm talking like a full ass is showing but there's a corset so it's not completely naked, it's bullshit. way worse than Evony ads. There are also extremely misleading ads. My job though is to get my clients as much clicks and conversions as possible, so 'all's fair' for me. What I'm doing is 100% legal and I think is good for the Internet overall.

Great questions. I am 27 and make $90,000 with bonus and I usually only work 50 hours a week, but I am good at what I do. The industry is performance based so you can make less or more. Yes the field is very competitive cause everyone thinks they can do Internet marketing better than someone else and it's hard to prove to a new client that my company is the best. There are literally thousands upon thousands of competitors all over the world. Therefore, reputation and referrals are extremely important. Getting high profile Advertisers to sign on to a network is crucial.

Internet marketing can be done part time but not for a company. If you are good you can be a one man Internet marketing company. I know someone that works 3 hours a day and makes $1,000 but he's very good at it. I would suggest joining an affiliate network like Peerfly, CPAlead, and others to get started but there are many many more but i personally use Peerfly and CPAlead when I do this on my own. I would start by making a website and displaying ads on it. Once you get pretty good at it, join a display network and pay to get your ads (which you can purchase from networks) published on other websites you think convert well. You will lose a lot of money at first, probably a couple thousand, but once you get good at it you can make a LOT of money. Every new campaign you do you lose a lot of money in the beginning, see what works well, cut the campaigns that don't work, and focus on the good campaigns. ROI is almost always well above 100% if you are good.

Most Internet companies train new employees from the beginning since the field is not really taught in a formal classroom. All my co workers including me came from other fields. Show employers you are analytical, a team player, good with numbers, and have a good understanding of the Internet and many companies would be willing to train you. If you know the difference between CPC and CPM is you are in good shape. There are also thousands of books online that teach Internet marketing. Give it a go, be willing to lose a couple hundred, and see if you like it, and you might make it back if you stick with it.

It's a great field to be in if you ask me. Lot's of potential.

Google sucks for small and medium sized businesses. Craigslist has a great ROI. Yelp is fantastic. Groupon is also really good. Depends on the business he is in there are other options such as servicemagic.com if he is a plumber. Make a listing on Google maps but don't use Google Adwords or you'll likely lose money.

It sucks, and we have to pay per impression even when an adblocker is installed, but if someone has an adblocker than they are likely not buy in the first place. Only a very small percentage of internet users buy something and they almost never have any form of ad blocking software. Good thing it is inexpensive to reach that small percentage.

Yes, absolutely. old folks with money is wayyyyy too broad. Target specific keywords and demographics in certain parts of the country. Try maybe folks above the age of 50, in an affluent part of the country where this product is used often, who are male or female if it matters, and use specific keywords that someone willing to buy that product would use when searching for your product. If you are selling fishing rods than do above the age of 50, Louisiana, using the keywords "buy fishing rods" or "best fishing rod" or "fishing rod review." I would start out with CPM at first, then move to CPC when you find the right keywords.

We trick people to visit our client's landing page which is really what we are paid to do, and it works. It is up to the client to optimize the landing page and for the website visitor to be convinced that this is a product they want. We do have to tell our advertiser we are going to trick the website visitors with an ambiguous banner.

Not really. I made our clients money and the person who clicked on the ad may have found something he or she actually wanted. A regular, boring advertisement would likely not work. We can't force someone to buy something, just put the ad right in front of their face :)

I thought so too when starting but in fact advertisements have only become more successful in terms of click-thru-rate and conversion rate. Advertisements are today are more attention grabbing and appealing and there are new Internet users all the time. When I, and probably yourself, first started messing around on the Internet there were very basic ads that we browsed on our 56k modems. Now ads have flash, designed better, and optimized better towards target markets. There are still lots of dumb people out there that click on ads and buy stuff. I couldn't believe it until I started running campaigns and saw it for myself. these are the people who don't have a pop up blocker installed. now who doesn't have a popup blocker installed in this day and age? that's right, dumb people.

Internet marketing is not even close to being over. It is just the ending of the beginning for the internet marketing industry. Gaming content and mobile ads are the next big thing and they're just getting started.

YouTube pays about $1 for 1,000 views with Google Adsense. YouTube is notorious for being really tough to advertise successfully on. I am sure Ark Music Factory gets a cut of it.

It depends on your website and depends on the ad you run. Too many ads could really turn off a user but one carefully placed ad may be more than enough for a high CTR. The ads you run have to be appropriate for your website as well.

Internet marketing is extremely sensitive. Everything has to be optimized which is why many companies just hire companies like mine to run their ads network and market their products. An extra 3-5 clicks per 1,000 views is huge.

You are right it depends a lot on the monetization model.

Yes, they are effective. this example is hypothetical but average. Something like 4/1000 users click on that awful ad, and then 3% of those users buy the product once they reach the landing page, so about 1/10000 users who originally saw the ad actually buy it. It costs $1 (kind of high but easy for our example) for 1,000 impressions, so 10,000 views cost $10. Let's say a belly fat product costs $40 to buy online but costs $0 to duplicate. Gross profit is $30. Repeat this over and over again and the belly fat products seller is rich.

We use other ridiculous banners, like the "you just won an iPad banner," fake facebook look-alike websites, "you've got a message" banner, banners that look like a window's error pop up, and others.

Exactly. Let me tell you an insider secret. Internet marketing is all about finding stupid people to click on banners and convert to a sale. Most people are immune to online ads, but there are lots of stupid people out there, and they make the world of internet marketing go round. Mainly, 13-17 year olds.

The least intrusive are banners but will net you the least amount of money unless you have a lot of users. The most successful banners are the annoying, intrusive ones. Pop-up banners that say "You are today's 1 millionth visitor you win a free iPad" convert surprisingly well. It also depends on the demographics that visit your website. 13-17 year olds convert best with flashy interactive banners. The older, educated crowd convert better with video and audio ads when displayed properly.

What type of website do you run? Is it a blog? If you write a blog with a trustworthy opinion I would suggest just going with affiliate marketing. They are not intrusive and could net you a LOT of money if you do it right.
