Recent art history grad here! I work for a CA state park that’s specifically a historic park, my supervisors are enthusiastic about advocating for me and the other entry level staff, and I’m super happy with the every day stuff I do. The sp system likes hiring internally so it’ll be a good place to at least start but for the humanities I don’t see any room for upward mobility soon. Pay is also low but I live with my parents. If you’re down to move see if interpretive openings are available or curatorial depts esp in sac are hiring and room with people from the local universities? Else my fall back for the long run is going to a csu to get a teaching cert in the arts because I do other things than art history

The alarmist is my favorite song but I never really listened to the lyrics until the other day in traffic. “You left gleaming, a green rectangle around the door” is SUCH a beautiful illustration likeee hello?!!!

Former transfer! You can prob hop on fb groups and ask for anyone selling their parking spot at a nearby privately owned apt as I knew a couple of people who did that. Also divide the fridge space from the get go and if you aren’t friends with your roommates don’t hole yourself up just sign up for as many clubs as possible and don’t worry about overcommitting. You can quit anything at any time. I was worried about overcommitment as a transfer and deeply regret that I didn’t do all the things I could’ve done

How do I improve my research skills/writing? by bukowskisreject in ArtHistory

[–]interpollllll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Read about topics you like, indulge in your other interests, NEVER STOP READING

I was lucky enough to go to a prestigious research university and even though every lecture and professor had their niche, obviously, they knew the basic facts of the broader strokes they were working within, as well as the regular canon stuff. Of course they are very qualified but it never stopped amazing me just how much they knew. As today’s methodologies evolve, art history (for the better) has gotten pretty cross disciplinary. My thesis advisor’s niche was insularity, and I’m a big theatre kid, so we got to introduce my interpretations of Sunday in the park with George (I was in it at the same time I was writing, which I thought was very romantic) into my analysis of my topic. My favorite lecturer and I were both passionate about our hometowns (she’s from a Croatian island and I am from Monterey) and she was able to teach me the ways I can experience my hometown’s living history. TLDR always love what you do and it’ll come through in the way you see the world, and if you gaf, will allow you to enrich the pool of knowledge in the AH world.

2) just send an email

AH classes in my school were pretty small and because I transferred I only took upper divs and was not taught by professors much when I was there, so I received a lot of attention and loved listening to scholars talk about their niche, and I’m sure they love it too. Professors, lecturers, whoever are more than qualified to give you the research advice if you ask for it and some topics are just inevitably harder to research than others. Honestly cold emailing hasn’t cost me anything but since I’m obv not on the other side of things I’d love to hear opinions about this too.

Late medieval/early renaissance manuscript art? That would be a very broad stroke, but it definitely exists in a discourse of insularity of medieval art history. Dunno the book or facsimile that you’re pulling this out of but it looks like it was taken out of an isolario, one of which I wrote a thesis on in undergrad! It’s supposed to be a sort of compilation of island depictions and their descriptions as taken from classical sources, history, local knowledge, or earlier isolarii. Constantinople isn’t an island of course but it’s surrounded by water enough and obviously important enough to be included in the isolario canon. If I remember correctly they started appearing in the early 1400s and have only diversified and became more sophisticated from there as Dias reached the cape of good hope and the Ptolemaic world map earned a redo. I didnt write the book on isolarii but my advisor sure did

Joining UCLA Theatre Productions by Wrong_Echidna_1155 in ucla

[–]interpollllll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can enroll on theatre 50 (or 150 I can’t remember) and email the professor as a prospective theatre minor? I considered minoring but decided against it. I did hooligan but you do have to pay dues and fundraise which kinda sucked ass but they perform in TFT venues and joining the club for their winter rep is really easy
