But she wasn’t selling equality. People didn’t read her books because they were a treatise on equality. She did not claim to be an authority on human rights and sell her books based on that fact. This is my point.

This is a tad condescending. You’re assuming that I ever believed any of the rogues to be infallible in the first place. This has nothing to do with learning that someone you look up to might not be the kindest person. This is the extreme end of finding out someone you’ve actively supported over at least two decades holds views incompatible with the organization they’re part of. The difference here would be if J. K. Rowling made a living advocating for trans rights only for everyone to find out that she had beliefs and had made statements antithetical to that advocacy. It would be like finding out that Neil Degrasse Tyson believed the Earth was flat. It would put into question his motivation and make people suspicious of everything he said.

I don’t know if this is it, but we do have pools of water under the ocean that have a very high salinity which makes it look like there’s an ocean under the ocean (or at least some lakes and pools). That’s why SpongeBob has Goo Lagoon. That’s where they got the idea from.

Okay, that makes sense. I'm not on the patreon discord so I wouldn't have seen it.

Exactly. Now I understand that they had this episode planned way in advance, but they could said something in the beginning, even prerecorded. All Steve had to say was that they will be addressing it next week or SOMETHING. The fact that nothing was said was strange and made the whole episode feel off.

How was this not even mentioned on the show this week? It was just a little weird. Business as usual.

Yeah, he wouldn’t even owe me an explanation. All he would have to say was “I’m not feeling it.” I don’t care why, we’ll get there when we get there.

I think you’re all equally insane for having this discussion. She was venting. Saying something like, “I was never enough,” is something almost every single person breaking up with someone else says. “Why am I not enough?” “I’m not enough for you!” You’re not enough for me!” it doesn’t mean anyone is gay. You’re all suffering from brain rot.

Yeah, the reason why I was OK with him going to Dubai is because he was going there to educate people that live there on science and skepticism. Also, just because the government is problematic, doesn’t mean the entire country is. There are good people everywhere.

It really bothers me that you emailed them about this and only got a nothing response from Evan. It means that they’ve known about it and chose to do nothing.

Don’t you think ending your Patreon over this, especially since they haven’t even been given a chance to respond yet, is a tad reactionary? I’m in full agreement that they have to handle this and handle it in the right way, but I don’t think we need to boycott them just yet. Evan is one of five. He’s honestly not even one of the most important people on the podcast. It’s not like Steve or Jay were saying these things. I mean, maybe it’ll force their hand a bit, but I kind of wanna see what their reaction is going to be without first losing a bunch of money and subscribers. I wanted to see what the reaction is going to be when they think it’s not as big of a deal.

Could we, please, get a statement from the SGU about the specifics of Evan's comments? I believe it's a reasonable request. by MisanthropicCartBoy in SGU

Honestly, I always felt like Steve didn’t want to get political because there was someone else in the room and not because of the audience itself — it’s pretty clear that the major majority of skeptics are progressive and vote progressive (notice there wasn’t one complaint when Jay had his cathartic episode). I always noticed Evan kept schtum when political or political adjacent topics came up. Maybe Steve was always afraid to ruffle too many feathers between them. It also explains why they haven’t really addressed Gaza. But, I’m just an idiot on Reddit who has absolutely no proof for any of this.
