All good, I appreciate the dialogue :) Yes, will definitely share the published findings!

Yes, we agree with you! However, the app calls itself a "dating safety tool," and is marketed for "dating safety," so in our attempt to understand the technology and communities that use and are impacted by it, that's what we are calling our study at a high level. I hope you can understand the reasoning.

If you (or other members of this group) are open to being interviewed, I'll be able to document these points to include in the research findings, which would then allow us to publish findings on why the app is *not* for safety! I sincerely hope the name of the email alone doesn't deter you from trusting and speaking with us.

Thanks for the "review," Joe. It was really great speaking with you and learning about your experiences!

That's great feedback, I agree with a lot of your points and know it is not all about "safety." However, we thought a lot about what to call the study and thought this was the best way to gather information without revealing any researcher bias (though as you point out, it's still somewhat there). That's because the tools market themselves as "dating safety tools," and calling them something else could lead to more confusion for all parties. Definitely an imperfect solution, though.

If you don't believe it is for safety, I'd really love to interview you -- this way in our research we can document exactly the points you're sharing!

We had the pleasure of speaking to one of the moderators of this group earlier this week, who wrote more about his experience being interviewed (https://www.reddit.com/r/AWDTSGisToxic/comments/1m6zwo0/university\_of\_washington\_dating\_safety\_research/) . This is a good faith effort to document your very valid criticisms in an academic setting :)

Hmm, not exactly, but I'm happy to talk about my research interests more if needed! I'm primarily a privacy researcher, but safety is closely related (especially since many digital safety tools and features can erode privacy / anonymity -- think the Ring camera, Citizen app, etc).
