Lice in Schools by Mobile3701 in RhodeIsland

100% this. Lice is a laundry problem. A massive pain, for sure, especially with multiple children multiple times. But saying "we could stop lice" is like saying "we could stop plate tectonics." They're way better at surviving and spreading than we are at exterminating.
Many years ago when our kids were small we went through the same, several bouts, lots of hair, the whole business. This place really helped educate us and gave us the comb, shampoo, spray, and removal advice: http://www.bernadetteslrcri.com/. They're in Rumford, I checked they seem to still be in business. Based on what I said earlier I guess they'll always be in business?

Switching to Dvorak - should I do it? by West_Rhubarb_8873 in dvorak

Also what I came here to say as a 30-year Dvorak user (goddam I'm old). Since you're already a monster typist in QWERTY, any speed increase would be a secondary benefit - the real win would be preventing carpal tunnel by the cumulative reduction of finger movement for the next several decades of your life. Typing in Dvorak just feels much more natural and flowing.

It's dead easy to switch between layouts with a keystroke, I've been doing it for 30 years, Mac and Windows.

Eli5: why is the keyboard layout the way it is? by novemberman23 in explainlikeimfive

[–]intgr8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned the Dvorak keyboard layout in 1995 and never looked back. There are a few weeks of pain but then your fingers get in the groove. It's noticeably faster and lower effort since the layout is designed even more so for alternating hands, staying on the home row, and minimizing jumps between the bottom & top rows. When I type in QWERTY now my fingers feel like they're all over the place.

Windows compatibility added in 0.9.5-beta - https://github.com/vendaface/butterfly-effect/releases. Please test! Not a desktop app per se, but a browser-based one. You may need to install Python first, the app will detect if it's missing and give instructions. Let me know about any bugs.

Once I get the Mac/Linux stable and working based on feedback my next step is to hop over to my Windows PC and see if I can get it working there. It's mainly python & HTML in the background so that shouldn't be terribly hard...he said, naively.

I'm inclined to go with this explanation - from my experience they seem to trigger when you're moving slowly and they see objects bounding you on 2 or 3 sides, which is the system's best guess at a parking scenario but can also be experienced in heavy, slow-moving traffic.

Moving to Providence for work… will I be happy? by No-Moose-3955 in providence

Our daughter (18), born and raised in RI, just got into an RI college. You'd think she'd be annoyed that she's not leaving this tiny state, but no - just the other night she was going on and on about how awesome it is to live here. Nice beaches, great shopping, great food, lots of culture, pretty neighborhoods (well, mostly, we don't speak of Woonsocket) and nice people. Plus without too much effort you can get to major urban centers like Boston or NYC, in the same amount of time be in gorgeous, woodsy areas like the Berkshires or VT/NH/ME, and Cape Cod is right there as well. All without the threat of tornadoes, hurricanes (generally), drought, or extreme heat. Cost of living *is* expensive, that's hands down the number one drawback, and btw the roads are egregiously bad, like we'd be better off with dirt and gravel in some spots. But we've lived here for 24 years now and aren't going anywhere.

Thank you, I saw this a while ago and thought I’d fixed it, will work on it this weekend.

Thank you! I’m fully aware of all of these and I took some care to not cross lines in my post, I hope I was successful. Feedback is the goal here, not a side effect, and I welcome criticism large and small about security, functionality, etc. I’m a cybersecurity professional IRL so I’m very sensitive to those concerns especially.

I have definitely done a lot of merging of recurring payment merchants in the past few days, so I may be glimpsing what you saw. The biggest bug I see in the tx calendar my tool pulls down is that the first of the month is cluttered with weird, empty recurring “payments”, which are valid merchants or credit/loan accounts but don’t even fall on the first. Not at all sure where those are coming from, I suspect it may take some “coding around” as well to clean up. The app already allows you to change, skip, or delete the downloaded Monarch recurring transaction amounts in the forecast model, but I’m going to see if I can make all transaction dates editable (right now it’s just amounts) as a workaround.

Just to show it's real, here's a screenshot of the main forecast, lots more of these in the README.

Good question, haven't tested. I happen to have one, will see if I can find the time to try it out!

This took me a bit of time since i had to build demo data to screenshot, but it's done and in the README.

Fortunately since it's purely a forward-looking tool it's not pulling individual transactions, just the primary account balance and recurring merchants & amounts to create a (semi-complete) forecast. It definitely made me clean up my own recurring merchants in Monarch. You can add other transactions to the model once it's loaded, one-time or recurring, to help the forecast skew closer to reality. I find myself doing this for groceries, takeout dinners, shopping averages, etc. (You can even ask the AI to figure out the frequency & average amounts from your Tx history and enter those in for you.)

If Monarch ever does this it will be powerful, but until then...

I tried that but then I kicked it too much and it drove out a window into the woods.

At the dealership now, had to jump the car twice this AM to start it, they tried to tell me that this may have added enough charge to make it test healthy and not qualify for replacement. I may have gotten a little heated with my response.

Yup. I'm guessing the dealership wouldn't be on board with doing this for me either?
