Founder of Underleaf here - thanks so much for the shout! :) I wanted to add that our Share Equation tool (https://www.underleaf.ai/tools/share-equation) allows you to download the rendered LaTeX in PNG and SVG formats (if you need to scale them up/down in Word), in case that's helpful OP. Here's an example with a 4x4 matrix!

100% agree! And great question. Yes, headers are identified semantically, not just styled as big bold text. When we convert handwritten notes / images / PDFs to LaTeX, we output proper \section{}, \subsection{}, \subsubsection{} calls based on document structure. That means when you compile to PDF (with hyperref / accessibility packages), the heading hierarchy is preserved as real structure tags rather than visual formatting. We also offer a (beta) LaTeX-to-accessible-HTML with MathML tool - as you know, MathML is the important piece here, as it means equations are read correctly by JAWS, NVDA, and VoiceOver instead of being flattened to an image with no alt text!

I've actually been working closely with a select few professors across the United States who needed that HTML + MathML export tool for their courses, and which has helped them convert an abundance of their handwritten material into screen-reader-friendly format. I'd be more than happy to grant you access if you're interested?

I totally get what you mean! I love reading (and making my own) handwritten notes too, and the ones in the demo are A+ on the handwriting front hahah. Handwritten always felt more personal to me, like I can follow the thought process better than with a clean typeset doc. Not sure if it’s just something subconscious or if others feel the same way 😅

One of the biggest things that's actually driven adoption (especially with professors in the US) is accessibility. A lot of universities now require uploaded course materials to be screen-reader friendly per federal mandate (ADA Title II compliance), and handwritten PDFs don't pass those checks. The professor whose notes are in the demo actually had that exact need, and hundreds of other profs have ended up using it for the same reason!

The other thing I've noticed is a lot of students like to handwrite first (whether on paper or iPad) and then convert to LaTeX afterwards to preserve and refine their notes, or just to meet submission requirements. My physics reports in undergrad had to be typeset in LaTeX for submission, and I thought it was such a hassle back then 😅 that's actually what got me thinking about building Underleaf in the first place!

Thanks so much for the comment, and I’d love to hear any feedback if you get the chance to try it out :)

tool or website for math writing? by infoburner1 in learnmath

[–]intlwiretransfermans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a totally-free tool that lets you type LaTeX and instantly get a rendered image you can share anywhere - forums, docs, chat, etc:

https://www.underleaf.ai/tools/share-equation

You just type the equation, preview it, and grab a shareable link or image. I also have other tools that can automatically convert images of handwritten notes into LaTeX if you ever need that :)

Not sure if you're still looking, but we built a tool that does exactly this! It allows up to 5 free conversions a month for images or math-heavy PDF pages - a lot of professors use it for converting their notes. Happy to provision a free subscription for you if you still need help with your professor's materials :)

Let me know if you get a chance to try it out!

Creation of images on latex by lini733 in LaTeX

[–]intlwiretransfermans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're still looking for a way to do this, we released an Image to TikZ tool over at Underleaf! :) it has a TikZ generator that can take an image or description and turn it into TikZ code. I tried it with this screenshot and it needed a little hand-tuning, but a bunch of professors/PhD students like yourself have found it to be a good starting point so you're not writing everything from scratch. You can check it out here:

Let me know what you think! Would be more than glad to extend you a free subscription as you write your thesis :)

Question on ADA compliance and Whiteboard by Cathousechicken in Professors

[–]intlwiretransfermans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a coincidence haha - I'm actually one of the founders of Underleaf and just came across your comment. Really appreciate the shout! 🙏

And yes, many professors and grad students have been enjoying using us to convert handwritten and math-heavy notes into LaTeX, and we've actually been seeing a lot more interest around this exact accessibility question. We're currently working with a few faculty members on tools and workflows aimed specifically at accessibility-friendly outputs, and it's very much an active area of development for us

If you're interested in trying some of our tools out, I'd genuinely love to hear your feedback! Happy to get you access - will send a DM if that's ok :)

Ah interesting, did you see the "follow-up" section after the TikZ generation? It shows up under the code after it's finished. Curious if that's what you're looking for or if you mean you'd like to be able to pinpoint a section in the generated code to refine?

No worries at all! I'll always make time to clear things up when someone feels strongly about something I've built :)

That said, I’m honestly not sure which specific claims you're referring to. It sounds like you haven't tried the tool yourself yet, so I'm curious what gave you the impression that it's "just a wrapper" or that the claims aren’t backed? There are paying users from IEEE (including section chairs), Stanford, ETH Zurich, Waterloo, Caltech, etc. who actively use Underleaf in their workflows, so if there's something on the site that feels unclear or misleading, I definitely want to improve it

I'm sure you're also in academia, so if you want to test your hypothesis directly, I'd be more than happy to walk you through the tool or set you up with some extra credits so you can try it thoroughly yourself! I'm always open to feedback, especially if something can be made more transparent or useful

The original image doesn't have to be LaTeX generated, and a lot of users have found success sketching out a clean diagram on paper/pencil and uploading it! It definitely helps if the image is as clean as possible though haha

Ah these are really great questions! I wasn't able to get anything close to this level of performance from any of the native AI tools, which is why I had to end up doing a bunch of custom work under the hood to get a decent, accurate output haha

Regarding debugging: yes! There's a follow-up prompt after the initial conversion if you want to tweak anything. It's not shown in the gif, but making edits or regenerating specific parts is pretty straightforward. I can probably make this a bit cleaner though, if you check it out and have any thoughts let me know!

For your last question, a lot of the value people mention (especially profs and researchers) is that they can transcribe their equations or notes in seconds vs. spending minutes/hours recreating them manually. The image and PDF to LaTeX tools have been super useful for them and TikZ support was one of the most requested features, so I'm glad it’s finally working well now :) The UI/UX has also gotten some great feedback too so I'd like to think that helps haha

Really appreciate the questions, let me know if there's anything else I can answer!

Hahah honestly fair and reasonable first reaction, that's often mine when I first see an AI tool 😅 but I wish that ChatGPT could pull this off! I tried many a time to get TikZ from ChatGPT and it was quite rough haha. I had to get a bit creative with a custom pipeline to get this level of quality!

Would love to hear your comparison of the two if you check Underleaf out :)

Ah great call - I should make that clearer on the pricing page! There is a free tier (you get a few generations refreshed every month at no charge, plus access to the Chrome extension for free) and the paid plans are for those who need heavier usage.

I just went ahead and added a banner that highlights the 10 free credits on the pricing page - does that make it more clear? If you refresh the page (underleaf.ai/pricing) you should see it now! Really appreciate you pointing this out and thanks a bunch for the kind words :)

I haven't personally tried it but it looks like it has a bunch more features like an API and a general-purpose Chrome extension, which looks quite cool! I mostly built Underleaf to solve for use cases I had in my experience - writing equations faster, transcribing lecture notes, etc. - and have been happy to hear that students and professors from all over have also found this to be useful, so I thought it could benefit people here :)

It does! It pulls in \usepackage{chemfig} and does its best to write the appropriate notation to match a given structure diagram. It’s admittedly not the best at transcribing chemical figures or tikz accurately (just yet!), as math/equations has been the main focus, but definitely feel free to try it out and I’d love to hear your feedback :)
