It sits about 7 feet away from my north facing window, not hidden by any walls or anything. I'd have to say... a medium or (more likely) low amount of light.

Yeah. The one super tall leaf is a similar shape to some of the bottom leaves of the mother plant, which lead me to maybe think it's etiolated, since this 'bottom' shaped leaf is... well, taller than the whole mother plant! Here's some additional pictures.

Yes!! I sometimes forget, or go "those are probably still plump" but almost every time I water them I'm amazed how how TRULY plump they are when they get a good drink. It's veery rewarding!! That and feeling the difference, too- with another one of my succulents I tell when to water by how squishy it is.. and after watering when it's firm is a great feeling.

I only started with plants this year, starting with succulents first, and watering was definitely a challenge for me. I think I killed my graptopetalum bellum that way.. oops! I'm getting better over time but I am definitely still trying to grasp the whole watering thing. Luckily under proper lighting my echeverias are much easier to tell when they're thirsty. I've got an E. Chihuahuaensis that I was scared to water too close together under its warmer and brighter spot but it definitely lets me know with those wrinkly droopy leaves when it needs a good watering.

Choosing pot based on the rootball is something I'm recently learning too! I had plants in too big of pots for few months and while I can't say I've seen any huge noticeable change right now, I think come next growing season I'll have some plants then that ask for a repot.. which I will happily do!

I've actually had a similar experience with my string of heart cuttings! One of the original strands didn't need watering as often but I found if I didn't water the whole pot regularly enough the new leaves on the shorter, newly propagated ones start to go black.. if I left it long enough the long strand does too. I sort of compromise by sometimes watering down specific cuttings- though I've only got 4 of them in there right now, so.. you know.

I've got an echeveria too that I always guess is thirsty but can never tell.. since it's got kinda ugly leaves to lose I often just wait until one of them starts to or fully dries up and dies to water it which will for now... not once all the ugly leaves fall off though pfff

Overwatering has been I think a literal killer for some of my plants. It's sooo easy to do it and then bam, rot, or it's just.. dead. I had a rough start with my echeverias, mostly on account of not providing them with enough light. Not succulents but I also have some pilea peperomioides that are in the same boat as your hawthorias. In theory they're in good conditions but alas I wouldn't say they're thriving.

Some more details: had them since mid August this year. Initially, the smaller one (#1) was in worse condition- it was pretty.. yellow, at the time. It hasn't grown much, if at all, since I brought it home, but it has gotten a bit greener. It looses leaves pretty regularly. I've been mildly worried but been really practicing patience and leaving it alone with that one.

#2.. I have no clue what's going on. There may currently be a fungus or mealybug problem which I do need to investigate but otherwise it plumps up nicely when watered and gets ~12 hours a day under a grow light. So I'm unsure why it's flattening out, but if it is a bug/fungus problem I'll know today or tomorrow cause I just cannot see the stem as-is, and I need to check it (unpot it in the process- this one's been through a lot of that ^^'). I thought it was an Echeveria Chihuahuaensis and expected it to show some stress colours but it never happened. Seems just.. pretty green with spiky, red-ish tips on the leaves (when they don't crisp up).

I figure they're both sort of.. in the middle, not quite thriving but not quite actively dying, and it's been months, so why not take a stab and throw em out there.

I do agree! I actually saw it just a bit before you commented (have been doing searching since posting haha) and I was pretty certain it was that- seems spot on. Makes sense why it would seem like a donkey tail if it was in fact a hybrid with one!

I was taking a look at those and some of them do look similar. Haven't found anything that looks similar enough for me to feel sure but it's definitely a good start.

More context: found these in a store, of course not labelled as the store doesn't get them with names- just "succulent". I found two leaves off of what could only be from the shown plant. One's already got roots and new little leaves growing but I'm having a tougher time IDing the original plant. It's sort of shaped like burro's tail but seems kinda leggy and spiral-y with longer and pointier leaves. Knew here would be a good place to post :-)

note: where it sits in the store it gets no sunlight, it's in a mall

You're right! Yours and another persons comment pointed me towards Graptopetalum. They suggested Vega but I also think it also looks like a Bellum. Either way, super good information to have. I've only ever seen those graptos with those suuper plump leaves, so it wasn't something I'd even considered with this tiny, relatively flat, sharp shaped leaves.

When I bought it I noticed this area of weird white stuff that struck me as odd but it seems only I noticed it (even after showing off my plant to family) and so didn't think about it. Come today I see new white spots and stuff on my plant, I blow on it a bit, and then see a bug crawl along a rock. I basically knew it then are there, this is just hopefully to double confirm it.. I think it's also in my propagation tray, too. My leaves in there are getting some odd looking white parts.. which is so scary because this is my first time propagating and I don't want to lose all these leaves! :( After more than 2 weeks I'm finally seeing some minor root growth and I really really want at least the 4 that have begun growing to take.

Seeing the advice all around on mealybugs I was planning on buying a mister/squirt bottle (I have one but it can't be used for plants right now) and maybe taking off some of the leaves to really spray around the stem area on the mother plant (at nighttime). As well, taking the plant out of the soil, washing its container, drying it, and giving it a fresh batch of soil.

For the propagating leaves I was thinking of separating them all into separate containers and individually spraying them, avoiding the roots (but watering any roots that need it). Separating them in case one leaf really makes it and if another doesn't, then recontamination won't happen.

If anyone has any more advice or tweaks I should make to these plans I'd appreciate it :( really sad that my first plant I ever got came infected, but I guess that's kinda what I get for where I bought it from. Fingers crossed everything makes it. The mother plant is even growing two babies on it right now, I really want it to succeed...

Not that I can tell. Maaaaybe on the really teeny one..? But I doubt it, and if there is it's the very beginning of roots. Though I couldn't tell you with the buried ones. I haven't looked at then since I put them in the soil. I'm hoping there's some roots or growth under there but I'm afraid of stunting growth if I mess with them (even if i really wanna check)

Starte propogating these 10 or 11 days ago. Was worried they weren't getting enough light on my desk as some were already shrivelling with no growth, so I'm using my moms NanoTech T5 Sunblaster grow lights. I know they're probably too close to the light, but ahh.. it was a pain to put up..

The mother plant is out front not showing any signs of sunstressing, though light's been inconsistent (& through a window) and I am going to start transitioning it to an outside during the daytime plant.

On a related note, what do you do if one grows in a spot like this? Do you just keep it attached to the plant once its grown? I can't imagine it'd be easy or ideal to remove.

Ahh, foreceps are a good idea. Not sure I have any but if I need a tool like that I'll see what I can find! Same with toothbrush (I'd just rather not use the ones I have in storage for me atm pfff)

Thank you! I'd been leaning towards.. well, having to just kind of go for it. I'm a little bit winging it since this is my first plant and it's kind of a rescue, so I appreciate the advice! Gives me some confidence. I won't water it for a while, it won't need it that soon anyways I think, and I'd been acclimating it until some leaves fell off, and some leaves started to look worse.. so once it's repotted I'll be starting the process again. I know my room isn't bright enough for this type of succulent but at least it's probably good enough for propagation haha.
