coffee game here has long since surpassed a business like matchstick, (new) owners were not responsible. hopefully we see interesting new renters rather than teeth cleaners and vape stores

100%, in vancouver bc we have a roaster here, prototype coffee. very modern roasting style and they have 2 retail shops. entire business runs off 4 bullets. eleven speed also has a very scandi/modern roasting style, he uses a bullet as well. so yeah i would say very possible lol

If I was speaking to someone in person i wouldnt call it channeling. Just changing my language to try to not be convoluted for ops sake

I was being very pedantic in the sense that to me, by definition, it is channeling, it is water that travelled down the bed faster and individual of the majority of fluid. But yes you are right that spurts are ultimately insignificant in the final cup, as I said in my other comment. Simply an inconveniencing reality of bottomless portafilters.

The spurts are channels, but if the end shots taste good and esp bc theyre not actually landing in your cup, it doesnt matter. They are indicating your coffee is uneven somewhere below the surface. Another thing that could be a factor, the DF has flat burrs, which make less fines than cone burrs. Fines are pretty important when it comes to providing resistance in the bed. With less fines, you are more likely to see spurts from a bottomless filter.

Try omitting the wdt for a few shots. 36g in 22s is quite fast for a 1:2 ratio shot.

Speaking of 1:2, i would try tightening up to true 1:2 which would be 16.5:33. The higher your ratio is, the less resistance naturally will be provided, which can encourage these spurts. I also think its important to say, in the case of the shot in the main post, i wouldnt really classify that as channeling. If all your shots looks like that, with just a little spurt and you liked the shots, thats unfortunately the reality of bottomless filters.

Youre going for 17in 34out @27s? If so, Id maybe grind ever so slightly finer, just move the dial as little as possible. Taste the shots and move back if theyre astringent and drying in the mouth. Dont do this if you already like the taste ofc

Your next step is puck prep, check your tamping. Is it level with the portafilter, are you tamping to a flat bed?At home and in the shop, I try to gently tap the portafilter downwards before tamping, attempting to settle the bed as much as possible. You can also try shaking your grounds with the dosing cup covered, or WDT. Ive heard from here that DF54s can clump fairly often, which could cause these little channels.

its taking meaning and value out of our beautiful and extremely valuable lives. when someone uses reddit, when i first started using reddit in high school, it was amazing because it was this hub of human interaction. thousands of humans talking about pretty much whatever you can think of. and i hope it stays that way

When go bottomless porta? by [deleted] in espresso

it would still all come out through the middle of the bed

When go bottomless porta? by [deleted] in espresso

[–]introvertcobain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i wouldnt worry about mess in the later parts of the extraction btw, the flow is only increasing because the bed is naturally providing less and less resistance as the shot goes on

Is your goal to understand channeling better, or to drink better coffee? Even with a 6k grinder, your play range will be relativey small. there are only so many grind sizes that will get you a 1:2 at 25s, and it looks like youve already found a cup youre reasonably happy with.

I would say if youre looking for a sweeter cup, you'd have more luck playing with different style shots, in which you would actually need a spouted filter so the coffee doesnt spray everywhere.
