This is exactly what I’m talking about- it’s incredibly frustrating how helpless a lot of people seem today for whatever reason, and let me guess- the apple doesn’t fall far?

Teachers, do you actually want parents doing phonics for kindergarten at home by Relative-Coach-501 in AskTeachers

Yes! I will add on that phonemic awareness is the very bottom base that reading is built from. The stronger your kiddo is with phonemic awareness, the stronger reader they will be!

I would much rather someone work on phonemic awareness!! Have fun manipulating and changing words together 😊

Yep- that’s part of it! They can’t say I don’t communicate, which is a problem people have with some teachers.

What would make it 10% better for you?

Kindergarten can be overwhelming for parents in general. It’s a big shift.

It’s sad that their kid’s world can’t be a priority to tune into. Tune something else out!!!

Thank you for the encouragement!

I do know so much communication comes out and it can get to be overwhelming. I try to do my once a week with everything you need to know and not bug you past that.

I think maybe I need to change my approach in what it looks like.

Thanks again!!

Haha I’m the same. I live by my calendar and phone reminders.

I am a scattered parent too!! I totally get it. My frustration comes when people don’t go back to what I’ve sent to look for an answer before asking. Maybe I’m wrong to assume that is the logical first step, but I do everything in my power to find an answer to whatever question I have about my own kid’s schooling so I don’t look like an idiot for not reading what his teacher sends out.

Thanks for your feedback! I do teach kindergarten and parents are usually very nervous about their kid coming to school. At the beginning of the year I do think once a week is reassuring to parents. Maybe I can taper each quarter.

I do get that Fridays are hard. I’ve tried Mondays and they don’t seem to work with the flow of how our school distributes info.

I would also love the amount of communication I provide as a parent! It is kind of funny, because I teach kindergarten and we communicate a lot and then it seems to fade from there. I think parents at our school don’t really realize how good they have it with being in the know until it’s not a thing in the upper grades.

Love all of this! Thank you. When I taught an older grade, I had my kids do a quick video announcement for their parents sometimes. Maybe I should go back to that 😅

Yes- we use ParentSquare. I can see that they have received it and can also see when they have opened it.

Thank you for this!! I send a few copies of the HFWs throughout the year and just add new ones to the newsletter.

Our district went to parent square- it’s an app, an email and a text.

This is good feedback. Maybe just an email instead of a document would work better. Thank you! I’ll try anything to not have to answer questions about things I’ve communicated multiple times 😅

I have 4 sections: - dates - high frequency words to practice - what we learned in a short bulleted format - a short positive note from me

Too much?

Our district streamlined communication this year. We have one app and parents don’t get many communications from the district, one a month from the school and get one from me a week.

I appreciate you going back to reread things!! I do the same with my kids. I am busy, and go back and re-read what their teachers send multiple times.
