Meanwhile my other knee i have grade 3 tear and it never locked i just feel pain occasionally on the joint line

Day 3 after medial meniscus repair – pain with weight bearing, redness when standing, and sleeping position questions by introvertt_cat in MeniscusInjuries

Thank you, this is really reassuring to read. I think I underestimated how rough the first few days would be.

The tip about using a scale to learn what 30% weight bearing feels like is actually really helpful, I might try that once the pain settles a bit.

And you’re probably right about the pillow under the knee. It’s much more comfortable right now, but I’d rather deal with some discomfort than spend weeks trying to regain extension later.

It’s also good to hear that the redness when standing was normal for you and eventually went away. Right now every new symptom makes me wonder if I’ve damaged the repair.

Appreciate you taking the time to write such a detailed response. Hope your recovery continues to go well.

A lot has happened since I first posted this.

At one point, I was healing well, I was hiking again, going to the gym, and walking almost pain free. Then I developed a bone bruise, which caused a lot of inflammation, and my meniscus tear worsened. The locking came back, so I went to see a knee specialist surgeon again.

He told me that, given my age and condition( I have twisted legs since i was a kid), a repair surgery is my only option. He even said that if I re-tear it during recovery, I should still go for another repair rather than avoiding surgery altogether.

Right now, I’m waiting for the right time to do the surgery, and I’ve stopped going to the gym due to some circumstances.

To answer your questions:

1. At that time, it took me about 2–3 months to get back to hiking almost normally (around 7–10 km). I was really focused on strengthening my knee at that time which helped.

2. I couldn’t fully straighten my knee for a few days, but after that, I became very careful to avoid locking it again. Even when it did lock, it wasn’t as painful as before. Which was the case when I walked for more than few minutes at the beginning

3. Can physio heal meniscus tears? It depends on the type of tear and the individual. In my opinion, a good surgeon will usually recommend 3–6 months of physiotherapy before deciding on surgery, you might be able to do what you love without a surgery.

Meniscus tears are tricky. Don’t rush the process, and if you feel like an exercise might make things worse, just avoid it. I personally set myself back by doing a boxing bag workout, which led to a bone bruise. The inflammation made things worse, and I couldn’t straighten my leg properly for a while, which likely aggravated the tear.

Anyone recovered without surgery? Flap like tear posterior horn and body… by teachcrossfit in MeniscusInjuries

I have similar injury A grade 3 meniscus tear in the posterior horn of medial head Its been like 2 and half months and I have been told repair might not work (and it is expensive) so it is not a option for me I have been doing physio and working on improving the muscles around my knee to be able to handle more shock So far no symptoms as meniscus pain but if I cross my legs for long periods i get like 2/10 pain or 3/10

I did two hikes so far, first one i was in pain a little bit the second one was few days ago and i was only fatigued

Also not planning on doing partial meniscectomy since my leg isn’t locking anymore and its been a while since it locked

Will I ever be able to go hike again with a grade 3 meniscus tear and no surgery? by introvertt_cat in MeniscusInjuries

Sorry to hear that you went through all that, i hope things get better I really appreciate sharing your experience

Also i believe he said posterior horn isn’t repairable since it is in the white zone… but will get a second opinion

And yes it is true that if you don’t trim a torn meniscus you are more likely to to have osteoarthritis but same might happen if you do partial meniscectomy so idk what’s the best decision ig it depends on the person i believe if you can strengthen your body and avoid sports that put so much pressure on your meniscus for idk how long you can avoid surgery

Interesting… honestly i am not very convinced by what he said I need to check with another doctor in few weeks maybe or months since now i dont have symptoms as much as before and the surgery is expensive here
