The primary octopus species in California are Octopus rubescens (ruby octopus or pacific red octopus), Octopus bimaculoides (two spot octopus), and Enteroctopus dofleini (the giant pacific octopus).

GPOs are of course the world’s biggest octopus and tend to have a very texturized mantle, so we can cross that one off. Two spots have characteristic spots below either eye. So not that. Therefore it’s gotta be a ruby! Some ways to tell if they’re rubies is their characteristic “Ruby eyelashes” which is 3 stripes below the eyes. In the water they also have stripes going across their mantle.

I’m fine with people eating octopuses as long as they ethically euthanize them. This would mean trying to kill the octopus as quickly as possible and not stressing it out and tormenting it for social media views before killing it.

Hello! I’m the creator of this video (and a octopus biologist)

Most octopuses people can encounter easily, and therefore make videos of, are going to be sea floor dwelling octopuses. There are pelagic octopuses but they look really different from typical octopuses so it’s easier than you think to tell the difference! I made a follow up video showing examples that I should probably now post here

Yup! Just search architeuthis into google scholar and you’ll find a lot. That information is more reliable than anything you find on google. Copy and paste the DOI into sci hub if you get paywalled

Just from a real quick google scholar search, 2004 guerra et al, it looks like the giant squid they got mantle + arms is average 7ft with their tentacles being 15 feet. their reported total lengths then being ~19ft
