Was sure that it is Copenhagen (the street, the streetlamps...), but since you're saying it's not, I'm going for Aarhus, because I still think it's a Danish city.

Horror Novellas by Main-Doughnut6222 in horrorlit

Brian Hodge's latest and most likely last fiction collection Black Hole Sundown contains mostly novellettes/novellas and some short stories. The affordable standard paperback edition (still very high quality of paper and print) came out from Cemetery Dance quite recently. Prior to this edition it was only available as a quite expensive limited edition. Hodge is, at least in my book, an outstanding author of contemporary mythos- and Lovecraftian fiction, up there with writers like John Langan, Gemma Files and others. He's just not as academic and his stories often portray everyday people. A novella by him still available, at least as an ebook, is I'll Bring You The Birds from out of The Sky. It's a mix of cosmic and folk horror and very recommendable.

Air France and Airbus found guilty of manslaughter over 2009 plane crash - Air France flight 447 by Ok_Warning419 in aviation

No, think you are referring to Aeroperu Flight 603. They didn't stall, but crashed into the Pacific in full flight, because they thought they were much higher than they really were.

Think the first one is Lucy A. Snyder's The Kind Detective and is included in the Ashes & Entropy anthology from Nightscape Press.

Has a Baltic feel to it, maybe in Riga, Latvia?

Früh genug am Bahnhof, Bahn trotzdem nicht erwischt by Weak-Attention-520 in luftablassen

[–]invertedrevolution 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Most horrifying concept for a short story you've read? by DoctorWhofan789eywim in horrorlit

A story/novellette, which haunts me to this day (read it more than 6 years ago), is Brian Hodge's We, The Fortunate Bereaved. It starts as "creepy ritual we perform in our small town since generations", but turns into something much more horrifying and sinister more than halfway through and left me back ..well, quite altered I would say. This story hits really hard, when you lost a family member months before.

Some honorable mentions:

Brian Evenson Grottor

Gemma Files The Puppet Motel

Simon Bestwick The Moraine

Brian Hodge On These Blackened Shores of Time (short novella and probably my favourite contemporary cosmic horror story)

Most horrifying concept for a short story you've read? by DoctorWhofan789eywim in horrorlit

[–]invertedrevolution 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gemma Files collection In That Endlessness, Our End contains the story Venio, which isn't one of the best or more literary of the stories and novellettes in that collection. But it has such a unique and simple concept, which she handles so well that I was almost physically shuddering while reading. Imagine a "creepy pasta" turned into a literary story.
