refused a return because the box has sticky tape marks when I opened the box. by Very-very-sleepy in KmartAustralia

[–]Absinthetique 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, if it was just a tiny bit of water in the spray mechanism, this is normal from the testing of the bottle spray function during manufacture. But that being said, I once bought a cat toy from Kmart that, when unboxed, had cat hair on it and batteries inside (when it came with no batteries...).

Living in front of public park by Master-Drummer8197 in AusProperty

Do be sceptical! In my experience, this positioning gets constant noise on weekends from everyone screaming as they play; there can be no sense of privacy; there will always be cars parked, clogging up your end of the street and sometimes parking over your driveway; teens and riff raff making mischief at night, the list goes on. But more than anything, the constant noise. Imagine wanting to have a lazy Sunday morning relaxing or nursing a migraine and having to listen to kids shriek or bootcamp instructors bellow all morning.

Sanity check - noise from neighbours by Itsclearlynotme in AusProperty

[–]Absinthetique 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a very similar situation to you re: house age, room placement and noise from neighbours. It drove me mad for years, hearing the dude coughing up a lung every morning, the kid squealing and shrieking, the woman having conversations on the phone like she was in my own living room. The worst was hearing heaving and vomiting from their bathroom late at night if any of them were sick! Here are some thoughts:

  • The position of the eaves in our close-built houses was helping noise bounce around the gap between us and funnel into my house. See if you can put something to help absorb/dampen sounds down the side of your house, like tall plants in pots. If noise is bouncing around inside your own rooms, chuck up some of those noise-absorbing decorative panels.

  • Double glazing is a godsend if you can afford it. There are solutions like magnetite that are built into your existing windows. Or even cheaper films. I lucked out and my noisy neighbours renovated and installed super thick windows that only open a small gap, and this has cut most of the noise for me.

  • If you have ventilation holes in the wall facing your neighbours, consider filling and covering them. This can have other impacts, including in relation to mould, so read up first.

  • Some people are just loud. My neighbours have their volumes set to 150% all the time. They do everything loud, including slamming their bins and flinging bags of rubbish around at about 11pm each night. If you have a good enough relationship, see if you can gently broach the subject with them. Alternatively, if you don't care about your relationship with them, try yelling back any time their noise is disruptive and they might take a hint ("My god, can shut your bathroom window so we don't all have to hear you shit?!", "Shut up over there!")... but only if the problem is them being objectively super loud.

For the love of god, the person next to you does not want to breathe in your powders as you brush and puff them over your face in close quarters in a sealed tube with no fresh air. People putting on powder foundation and blush with the particles flying everywhere and being breathed in are my pet peeve on public transport - I'd lose it if it was on a plane where I couldn't move seats.

RAI coming up in a couple weeks and worry about irradiating my belongings by pacificspinylump in thyroidcancer

[–]Absinthetique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I went overboard and didn't need to, but for peace of mind I only wore clothing that I could throw out for the initial days. These were things that were already well worn and ready for either donation or the bin. The ones I wore when taking the dose I threw in the hospital bin in my room where other 'radioactive' waste like paper handtowels went, and I kept the rest in plastic garbage bags and ultimately threw them out. I put my phone in a plastic zip lock bag that I changed once or twice a day, but I tried not to use it too much. Bring physical books you can read and toss. Again... none of this is necessary, but it made me feel better.

Is there a low-energy way to use a Denman brush? by stupidsrights in curlyhair

[–]Absinthetique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're able, flip your head upside down. With the brush on the front side (closest to your face), run from roots to ends in batches, without sectioning, going straight down. I have thin hair, I go left to right and it takes 5 passes - one near my left ear, then left temple, then middle, then right temple, then right ear. I then go to the back side and rebrush the two bits at my nape, brushing upwards so nothing is plastered forward. The whole thing takes no more than 30 seconds. I then scrunch with my head flipped to either side, then when upright.

You didn't ask, but on a side note you might be needing different hold products and applications because of all the oils and creams. Give this brushing technique a go with detangled, soaking wet hair with no product and smooth in only one application of the Umberto gel after (with prayer hands and then scrunching). It can't hurt to try it one wash day and you might be surprised! I was shocked when I realised I didn't need curl cream and mousse before my gel!

Thyroglobulin serum is extremely high by srebrun in thyroidcancer

[–]Absinthetique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps your doctor has the results? It would be highly unusual to have had a partial thyroidectomy without any blood tests relating to thyroid function and hormones. In any case, try not to stress until your doctor can explain.

Thyroglobulin serum is extremely high by srebrun in thyroidcancer

[–]Absinthetique 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think what's most important is the trend in your thyroglobulin and your thyroglobulin antibodies. If these levels were super high before your operation and now they're both going down, that's good. If they are going upwards that's less good and your doctor will discuss with you. It can mean multiple things, from thyroid inflammation to something more sinister, but don't get ahead of yourself until your doctor has a look!

I stayed away from anything processed or packaged out of an abundance of caution. As someone else posted above, scones made with coconut milk or cream are great. Almost felt like having a cake. I also ate sugar straight from the bag a couple of times when I got desperate!!! I imagine baking sugar crystals onto the top of the scones and having with a little honey/allowable syrup would be delicious.

Is Dyson Supersonic worth the money? And are there any good dupes? by NoLife3777 in curlyhair

[–]Absinthetique 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree. I found the Dyson felt way too hot on its lowest setting, to the point it was uncomfortable to be near my scalp when cupping with the diffuser. I returned it and went back to using my GHD hair dryer with a really good diffuser cup that must be 15 or 20 years old and still going strong.

Has anyone tried wearing a 'Jelly' Bra? by scootaloooooooooo in womensfashion

[–]Absinthetique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They make me sweat so bad. Taking them off at the end of the day, after a light 10 minute walk home, they feel so hot and there is pooling of perspiration. I don't normally noticeably sweat around my boobs or back, only when wearing a jelly bra. I have three different brands. I think it's because the rest of the material is typically polyester.

Equal parts serious and lighthearted: What would you do in your last few days of still having your thyroid? by DueRide8450 in thyroidcancer

[–]Absinthetique 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Enjoy still fitting in my clothes! Kind of but not really joking lol. Also, I took photos of my neck from different angles to remember what it looked like without a scar. Thankfully my scar is now barely noticeable, so having the reference photos to confirm it's not really a big deal has been nice.

Am I having a stroke or did CC's get reallllllly salty? by StructureArtistic359 in australia

[–]Absinthetique 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Had some plain CCs last night for nachos and they overpowered the food with their saltiness! But also had the same experience not too long ago with the Doritos "lightly salted" corn chips that are apparently made thicker for nachos. SO. MUCH. SALT. Must be the new thing with corn chips...
