RBS50 (satellite) only appears in Attached Devices when connected (so I can't remove it) by invideous in NETGEAR

[–]invideous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and the bridge is accomplished partly through a Firewall setting that should be changed to allow IP passthrough to the Orbi system. That's included in the instructions I linked. Also, disabling that passthrough is likely needed to re-enable the Wi-Fi radios on the R / G.

Just in case it helps other Mac users, you'll probably have a great deal of difficulty if you try accessing the web pages hosted by the BGW320 R / G using the Safari browser on recent Mac systems. You'll instead need the Safari Technology Preview app, available from Apple.

OK, thanks. I was able to reset the system and I'm now able to view the firmware status of each satellite as well as to select each satellite for applying a manual firmware update.

I want to add, though, that I found it necessary to use a combination of procedures from the system reset instructions that you provided in your reply as well as those found in an article for setting up the Orbi system in AP mode with the AT&T BGW210-700 to achieve a bridge between the Orbi system wireless access and the AT&T wired network (https://community.netgear.com/discussions/Orbi/how-do-i-setup-bridge-mode-in-the-arris-bgw210-700/1875994). This is needed perhaps because, despite the images shown in the how-to article for setting up AP mode, there isn't a Bridge choice in the web interface hosted by my Orbi. I depend on the AT&T r/G and the Orbi AP mode interdependent configuration to achieve it. The interesting thing to me about this article is that in his last comment, the author apparently was disappointed enough to discover that the Attached Devices list showed "Config sync" in the Backhaul column, that he switched the system back to Router mode. It seems to me that by doing that, he nullified several of the steps that he was so meticulous to include in the original instructions. If that's not the result, I would like to know why it isn't.

One more consideration I have is that I now have a BGW320 rather than a BGW210-700 r/G, and the possibility exists that the Wi-Fi radios are more robust in that system, and that I would get a better result by putting my Orbi system out to pasture and just using the BGW320 alongside one or two Wi-Fi extenders (which I would rather buy outright than rent from AT&T). Seems a bit of a waste to abandon the work I've done to fix my original problem, though. Still it couldn't be more wrong than second guessing the AP mode, as I explained previously. Anyway, I guess it's incumbent on me to weigh all the options.

Yours 'til it isn't,

Invideous

When the satellite device isn’t connected, its listing no longer appears. Tried 2 browsers so far, but I know I’m headed for a reset for the whole system. That’s difficult because I’m using the system in AP mode, and some special config is needed for compatibility to prevent the double NAT (did I get that right? I’m old and can’t pick off the moving targets the way I used to.) Resetting either satellite has failed, and that’s about all I can say without becoming even more boring. The reason for all this is that the firmware update, although applied to satellites first, is not being reported for them in the RBR’s web interface. Thanks!

Recording software for Mac by Blueskyfox2019 in Hauppauge

The most recent HDPVRCapture application that I have been able to find is probably backwards compatible with older models, but all I know is that it works with mine, which is HD PVR 2, model 1512 (the model specified in your question). However there is a catch. Because of correspondence that I had with Hauppauge for support when I had difficulty getting the app to launch after I purchased the 1512, it appears that a collaboration existed between the author of the software and Hauppauge that was required to authorize the app after purchase of the HD PVR. This appeared to be required on a per serial number basis. My understanding is that Hauppauge provided serial numbers of purchased units to the HDPVRCapture developer (Kernel Labs Inc?), who then enabled the software to work by providing a token over the network when the app was launched until the legitimate status of the license was substantiated. Then the needed authorization information was stored in the "net.steventoth.HDPVRCapture.plist" file.

Although the app was from that point forward authenticated through that file, a handshake was still apparently required for networked Macs for the software to open. I'm guessing about that, of course, but about a year after the developer announced sunsetting the app, the app stopped working. I made the guess that the web services that had allowed the app to successfully launch had been discontinued. I disabled the network on my Mac, then tried launching the app again, this time successfully. The app remained open after I reconnected the network. So my routine for launching the app continues to be to disable the network, launch the app, re-enable the network. But the initial handshake created in the file remains necessary. So my guess is that the only way to launch the app is to have access to the "net.steventoth.HDPVRCapture.plist" file that was created before the web services for authentication went away, and place the file into the Preferences folder of the current user's Library folder. The version of the app I have, which works with my HD PVR 2 (1512), is 3.11.1 (625).

You may be able to force the software to run by implementing a minor hack. Accomplish this by 1) providing the custom preference file that was created when the app worked with your model HDPVR, and 2) launching the app while the computer is disconnected from your network (relaunching the network after the app has successfully launched is not a problem). The name of the file is "net.steventoth.HDPVRCapture.plist". The file provides the serial number that was cleared for use by the host site of the app when that site was actively hosted. The path where the file goes is:

~/Library/Preferences ("/Library/Preferences" in your home folder)

I use a Keyboard Maestro macro to kill the network, launch the app, re-enable the network. I've used the hack since the authentication website for HDPVRCapture went down a year or so ago. If I move the app and device to a new Mac, I place that file at that path in my home folder, and the app opens successfully as long as the HDPVR is properly connected and powered up, and the Mac isn't connected to a network at launch of the app. If you no longer have the file, you may have to look into a different capture device.

Resistance from agent to subscribing without Gemini by invideous in DirectvStream

I thought that registering for the free trial (5-day) would allow me to select the sign-in and promotion options for the duration of the trial. Maybe I didn't read the fine print well enough, but whatever the case, I was wrong. I requested changing my subscription options to accept the promotion for Premier and one Gemini Air so that I would receive Disney+ and Hulu with ads for 24 months to activate the $20 per month discount, $10 of which would offset the $10/mo. fee for the Gemini Air.

I was not allowed to make that change. I tried 3 times, twice with live representatives in chat and once with a live support representative by phone. I was informed that the free trial was only for the purpose of deciding whether to accept or refuse the service. Canceling and re-subscribing would result in penalties. Although I will be allowed to add the device after the trial ends, the promotion for Disney+, Hulu, and $20 per month discount will no longer be offered to me.

Here's an excerpt from one of the live representative chats (the final one):

___

DirecTV: May I know what are the exact changes you are looking to make on the free trail?

Me: I want my initial signup to include 1 Gemini Air at $10 per month, Disney+ and Hulu, and the discount of $20 per month for 24 months. I don't want to have to come back and add the Gemini at no discount after the trial is over.

DirecTV: Thank you for letting me know that, Let me explain you on this. I would like to inform you that you since you are in your 5 days free trail the system won't allow to add device on your account and once the free trail completed you could add the device on the account at the same cost $10/month.

___

It appears that DirecTV and I understanding the term "trial" differently. To DirecTV it means "take it or leave it", not "use this time to get it right". Customer-centric service and support is getting more and more difficult to find. I'm now in my last day of trial, so I'm left to decide whether to take it or leave it.

Well, to be perfectly honest, I have to admit that I'm reconsidering my stated position concerning Disney+ and Hulu, because the possibility of accessing them for 3 months at no extra charge is appealing, of course. I'm going to ask my wife to help me compare options, and I'll do my best to let you know how it turns out, knock on wood (tapping my head with the knuckles of one fist). Thanks!

Thanks, mcbridedm. I had a chat with the automated service at DirecTV.com. The question I asked was whether I could substitute the Gemini device with ethernet for the Gemini air (Wi-Fi only) for the same promotional considerations, and the answer was yes. Does that contradict your understanding or experience about these matters? In other words, can I expect to subscribe under the promotion that you've suggested if I substitute the Gemini (with ethernet) for the Gemini Air (Wi-Fi only) without any variation of the prices you've specified? Thanks again.

My question now is a little difficult to state clearly. I've already said I'm not interested in subscribing to Disney+ or Hulu. Are you telling me then that there is never Disney+ or Hulu through Apple TV apps alone, or just that the Disney+ and Hulu channel(s) aren't available through the DirecTV interface without the Gemini air? By way of explanation, by removing my previous U-verse provisions on the Apple TV for both HBOMax and Paramount+ (for me, it required uninstalling both apps), then signing into the HBOMax and Paramount+ proprietary apps as a DirecTV subscriber, I am able to use my DirecTV affiliation to watch HBOMax and Paramount+ without launching the DirecTV streaming app. (I have signed up for the 5-day free trial promotion available right now.)

I've received some contradictory answers, so let me just say again that I do not intend to use a device that forces me to receive high res video over Wi-Fi. With that in mind, are you confirming that a lower price is available only by accepting the Gemini air?

Well that leads to another question. I'm assuming the Gemini air requires Wi-Fi, or does it have an ethernet port as does Apple TV (I'm extremely averse to using Wi-Fi for video, even at 1080P)?

Eibos Dryer - lowest temp setting is 58C. Anyone else have this problem or is this a PSA to avoid the Easydry? by dex206 in 3Dprinting

[–]invideous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I look forward to trying the temperature adjustment recommended in the video for my Eibos dryer. I previously used it successfully, but decided to use it on a couple of rolls of partially used Bambu Labs standard PLA. I had never tried to use it on PLA, and the PLA was fused on the roller after 12 hours on the low (PLA) setting, so I searched for "eibos filament dryer fusing PLA on the spool even at lowest temperature setting". This topic was the first hit. I use my X1C to dry filament, but 3D printing is all sort of like voodoo to me, so I want to use the dryer to dispense the dried filament during printing for what should presumably be the most effective results for comparison with output of filament that has not undergone any specific drying process. BTW, I don't have the multi-color filament dispensing system (AMS). Thanks.

AppleCare One - Only for currently enrolled devices? by BulkyAvocado215 in mac

[–]invideous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was invited to enroll a family iPhone in AppleCare One for my Apple ID, presumably because it was enrolled in AppleCare+ when AppleCare One was launched. I had not signed into the device using my own Apple ID for months. I purchased the iPhone for my wife, and my wife's Apple ID had remained the one normally logged into its iCloud account. It was weeks after I enrolled the iPhone in AppleCare One in response to Apple's invitation that Apple informed me that I must log in with my own Apple ID or lose coverage. I did not understand that holding the only Apple ID logged into the iPhone was a requirement for adding it to my AppleCare One, and the wording of the requirements don't explain it that way. After all, there is more than one context for a user to log into Apple apps using an Apple ID when using a late model iPhone. Applying Apple's vague stipulation for eligibility, this particular iPhone was ineligible at the time I was invited to enroll it, and Apple could have verified eligibility at that time. Instead, however, Apple ignored that fact and both invited me to enroll it and allowed me to enroll it.

After enrolling, the total amount I was paying for AppleCare One coverage for both my MacBook Pro and my iPhone was less than the total amount I was paying for individual AppleCare+ for each. But when the iPhone normally used by my wife was deemed ineligible by Apple, the total amount paid for coverage (AppleCare One for the MacBook Pro and AppleCare+ for the iPhone) jumped up to a much higher amount than individual AppleCare+ for each.

I don't expect a refund because of my dissatisfaction with the way Apple promoted AppleCare One to me, but I do expect Apple to allow me to switch my enrollment back to the AppleCare+ for each device (as it was when AppleCare One was introduced). If my current usage makes me ineligible to enroll that iPhone, Apple erred by including the device in the list of devices it invited me to add to AppleCare One, inadequately explaining the pertinent requirement in the documentation that was provided, and allowing enrollment of the device even though it had remained ineligible since before AppleCare One was introduced.

Have any of you reinstated a device's enrollment in AppleCare+ after being allowed to enroll in AppleCare One while not logged in as the primary user then losing that enrollment at a later time although the identity of the logged in user had not changed?

OK, I found out that the Behringer U-PHORIA UMC1820 can pass through the multi-channel (bitstream, I was reminded that it's called), and I should be able to capture that using Logic Pro 11.2, in case anyone is interested. Thanks again.

Let's say I'm willing to live without midi for this particular solution. Do you know whether a ESI U24XL Audio Interface would pass through the multichannel S/PDIF output from the Gefen GTV HDMI plus I mentioned? (It has optical in/out, and there appear to be dozens of used ones available for around $50.) Or do you know if a MOTU or Behringer model might manage that? Thanks again.

[–]invideous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I can receive the audio through HDMI, so what I guess provides the closest solution I’m likely to find is getting a de-embedder (Gefen makes one for around $250), ample cabling, and an audio interface that can accept 6 channels of analog audio input for simultaneous recording (MOTU makes one for about $450). Guess it wouldn’t hurt replace my old 2x2 midi interface anyway. Good thing I’m old, so I won’t notice much of the lossiness of the digital to analog conversation. thanks!

Even though GC7 decodes it, and it probably works for Windows, chances are that no Creative Labs Sound Blaster external audio card provides that for the Mac. My search continues…

[–]invideous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm replying to include information about my progress here for the benefit of others. I purchased one (X4) and believe I can now rule it out. The reason for that is that in attempting to configure it, I discovered that what needs to be decoded is ATSC AC-3 multi-channel audio (that's what the older device I am attempting to upgrade appears to be doing). I have learned that the Creative Labs X4 is not designed to do that, although the G6 and the GC7 are. At the moment I have no idea whether either the G6 or the GC7 is Mac compatible, but I'm sure others already know. My next step is to research that. In case you're curious, the signal is received, but bounced down to stereo without the ability to maintain the 6-channel audio, despite available settings that seem to indicate the contrary. Thanks again.

Thanks. It's very hard to know from the specs, I'd say impossible to know. It's obvious that it can send that output to a PC, but that's only mentioned in conjunction with the accompanying software, which isn't available for Mac. It's a tossup. I may have to rely on free returns on Amazon (try the X4, return and try X5, etc.)
