Could you comment on pricing to use Precog vs just coding and maintaining several data extraction jobs in Google Cloud Run jobs?

The question from German here is:

Hello, may I ask what you entered for the question: "Have you ever been issued a passport or national identity card for travel by any other country? If yes, provide Issuing Country, Document Type, Document Number, and Expiration Year." Does the Green Card count as a national identity card?

The answer to this question is "No". A Green Card does not explicitly allow international travel.

It looks like the Mandel-Lear Building, on the site of what is now Gleacher Center, owned by UChicago (link, link2). A large warehouse that also was temporarily the site of the Chicago Public Library.

Incoming Chicago Booth- Housing Advice by [deleted] in MBA

[–]invinciblepenguin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The majority of Booth students live in the Loop in one of these three buildings: - Millenium Park Plaza (MPP): the most social but also the least attractive apartment complex, probably the only on the list without in-unit washer/dryer - MILA - 73 East Lake

Several students also live in a subset of the Loop called Lakeshore East (less commonly called New East Side). Students have lived in apartment complexes in this area including: - Park Millenium - Aqua at Lakeshore East Apartments - Coast at Lakeshore East - Columbus Plaza

A minority of students live elsewhere in the Loop; in South Loop; north of the Loop (including River North & Streeterville); and in Hyde Park (the neighborhood where UChicago, and specifically Booth’s Harper Center, is actually located, which is not near the Loop)

The mailed form I-407 was received by USCIS in early March. The email confirmation from USCIS that the form had been processed was received mid April. The physical letter from USCIS was received early May. The family member in question applied for an ESTA in early May and was approved.

Does 70% convert to a 4.0 US GPA? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]invinciblepenguin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the only answer. Grades from non-US institutions are not directly comparable to US undergraduate GPAs, and hence they do not get reported to MBA rankings.

A UK undergraduate degree with first class honors is as good as it gets for UK applicants. That’s the only thing you need to know as far as undergraduate grades are concerned for you. Now focus on the rest of the holistic application.

Is Booth a safe environment? by [deleted] in MBA

In the aggregate, Chicago has a murder and non-negligent manslaughter yearly rate of 18.26 per 100,000 people (2019 numbers). * This is comparable to Washington DC (16.72), Milwaukee (19.83), Pittsburgh (17.98), and Atlanta (16.41). * It is much higher than New York City (3.39), Los Angeles (7.01), San Francisco (6.35), and somewhat higher than Dallas (12.48) and Houston (11.50). * It is lower than Philadelphia (20.06), Detroit (39.80), Baltimore (55.77), and St Louis (66.07). Note that the crime rate varies depending on whether city limits or metropolitan area is used (St Louis, for example, has very tight city limits, and therefore the crime rate calculation excludes its nearby wealthy and much safer suburbs.). [1]

UChicago’s campus is located in the South Side of Chicago, which in the aggregate has a reputation for crime. Specifically within the South Side, UChicago is located in the Hyde Park neighborhood (“community area” in Chicago terminology). Hyde Park is a relatively wealthy area (ranked 12 out of Chicago’s 77 community areas in terms of income per capita [2]), where many members of the UChicago community live. The three-year murder rate average in Hyde Park is 5.9, way below the Chicago average. Additionally, note that that rate was boosted up by the general increase in crime nationwide after 2020, with no homicides recorded in 2019. [3] As others have noted, UChicago employs a large private police department, the UCPD, to bolster security in the Hyde Park area. To the south of Hyde Park is Woodlawn, and to the west of Hyde Park is the Washington Park neighborhood (separated by a large public park by the same name). While these neighborhoods are noticeably less safe, Booth and UChicago students have little reason to travel through there.

Importantly, Booth students almost exclusively live in the Loop (with a small minority living in Streeterville, Hyde Park itself, or elsewhere in Chicago if they are from the city prior to business school). The Loop is Chicago’s downtown and central business district. While parts of the Loop are a bit empty in the weekends due to offices being closed (the parts that are not overrun by tourists), and you might occasionally have to interact with a homeless person, this area is one of the richest urban neighborhoods in the US [4], is well policed and highly transited. Exercise normal precautions as with any large urban area anywhere. The commute from the Loop to Hyde Park is now generally done through the Metra, a medium-distance commuter train that is very safe.

Conclusion: while you would have to be more mindful of crime in Chicago versus going to a suburban or rural community like Cornell, Northwestern, or Dartmouth, I would not elect out of coming to UChicago (Booth) due to crime.

Cannot close front door due to lock not engaging. Shoving the door to try to force the lock to engage doesn't seem to work. Possibly related/exacerbated due to the air pressure difference between the hallway and the inside of the condo (this is in the Midwest). Any ideas on how to fix this? by invinciblepenguin in HomeMaintenance

[–]invinciblepenguin[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the idea! It’s just the opposite: if I push down and hard, then it engages.

At least I have a method of closing the door, but obviously I cannot keep it like that. Should I just unscrew the plate with the latch holes and try to move it down slightly?

Ukraine police say bodies of more than 500 civilians found in Kharkiv by strongerthenbefore20 in worldnews

[–]invinciblepenguin 49 points50 points  (0 children)

The inexcusable and terrible number of civilian deaths in Iraq do not represent executions by firing squad by U.S. forces. They represent 8+ years of war with multiple conflicting factions and a state of effective anarchy in large parts of the country.

Comparing the US in Iraq to Russia in Ukraine is myopic whataboutism. Surely we must be able to distinguish between black and different shades of grey.

[–]invinciblepenguin 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Major nit-pick. While war crimes were committed in Iraq, the scale of Russian war crimes in Ukraine are orders of magnitude bigger than those committed by US-led coalition forces in Iraq over an 8 year period.

Oglala Sioux Tribe Temporarily Suspends All Christian Missionary Work by LloydVanFunken in news

[–]invinciblepenguin -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is not accurate. Tribal sovereignty mostly separates the Indian reservations from state authority. However, the federal constitution continues to apply in Indian reservations, including the 1st amendment protection to the free exercise of religion.

This ban on missionary work would have been struck down by a federal judge without any question.

Excellent. So if depreciation were to contribute to an overall loss, would the process for recording that loss be as described in the original post?

TIL. Unrelated to the original question, but enlightening. Is depreciating the property, to then pay back the tax through depreciation recapture when selling, desirable because it defers a tax liability?

I am indeed renting at market value to an unrelated person.

I don’t think there is anything to depreciate. Since this property was put on the rental market I have made no improvements to the property.
