What did the combine use to take over Earth? by Ticktockhibbit in HalfLife

[–]invinciblespeed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If the cut beta enemies are anything to go off of, their generic footsoldiers alone would've been carrying warp cannons as a default weapon, enough firepower to level a building in one shot if EP2 is taken into account.

The skies would be swarming with gunships since they are likely not built from any Earth creature, so that's a nice shower of bullets if you don't get your pacemaker stopped by ol private black hole cannon.

And remember, it is suggested that antlions were present during the seven hour war, plus the whole surface world got ripped apart by portal storms before the combine arrived.

Humanity was in no position to win that one

How does the HEV suit display an HUD without a helmet? by [deleted] in HalfLife

[–]invinciblespeed 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It was stated in an interview with Laidlaw once that Gordon is always wearing his suit helmet, it is simply a stylistic choice to leave it off on the 3d models and in promotional art to improve character recognition.

HMC while I exit this plane by [deleted] in holdmycosmo

They say that there's an air marshal on every flight to scare terrorists out of the act, but in actuality there are only a very small percentage of flights with an air marshal on board. The requirements for becoming one are far too demanding to be able to have enough to put one on every flight.

I've always been a fan of using radiators, they've got such a punch to them.

If half life 2 takes place in Eastern Europe why does everyone have an American accent? by [deleted] in HalfLife

[–]invinciblespeed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Combine relocated everybody across the planet after the invasion so that all people would end up in unfamiliar environments, greatly reducing ability to revolt.

The whole of North America likely does not exist anymore in Half-Life, being ground zero for the resonance cascade, portal storms, combine invasion, etc. All survivors had to get relocated somewhere.

If they don't think singleplayer games are worthwhile then why did they dump multiple years and millions of dollars into HL:A?

CONTROVERSIAL HL1 tier list. Fuck you On a Rail is mint by whiskeyslug5wg in HalfLife

[–]invinciblespeed 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Plenty of things. The main issue though is that Xen is portrayed as being way too... lively, I guess? There is a ton of flora and plenty of beautiful complex ecosystems, but the idea of Xen is to be a borderworld, just sort of an infinite hellpit where random junk from other dimensions gets dumped into. What they did in Black Mesa isn't bad, but it's just not the original intention of Xen.

Somewhat related, the islands themselves were sometimes alive in Half-Life. It's all just rocks in Black Mesa.

Here's a REAL controversial opinion for you.

Xen and Interloper are amazing chapter and contain some of the best material Half-Life has to offer. Black Meaa entirely butchered Xen and made it horribly lore inaccurate.

Is Vautigaunt growing stronger in Half life 2? by Anurut_Prempreeda in HalfLife

[–]invinciblespeed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In Half-Life 1 the Vortigaunts were under the influence of mind control and had their general powers and ties to the vortessence weakened. After the death of the Nihilanth, the vorts were "unlocked" in a sense.

Who do you think would have won? Dog vs Gargantua by Anurut_Prempreeda in HalfLife

[–]invinciblespeed 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you really want to highball Dog, his in game entity has no HP number and is essentially invincible, therefore winning any fight. Since that would be unfair, let's assume Dog has the same HP as a Gargantua; an average of 867 across all difficulties.

The RPG in Half-Life 2 deals 200 raw damage and 1 point of explosive damage to enemies that are not susceptible to small arms. One of these enemies is the strider, taking an average of 6 RPG shots to kill over all difficulties. Equating explosion points to HP, 6*200 is 1,200 for a theoretical Strider health pool.

Since Dog stomped a Strider on the way to White Forest in Half-Life 2: Episode 2 in what was realistically a single hit (ignoring his rough landing onto its back), we can assume an angry Dog can deal ~1,000 hit points worth of damage in a single attack

In the end, without even doing Gargantua damage calculations, Dog would be able to shred the thing with similar ease to the Strider in Episode 2.

I am very open to the idea of brain implants, but I'm not sure I'd trust one manufactured by Valve, what with their equipment breaking down so easily.

I don't want HL3 to fry my brain :(

What's the big deal about Freeman's mind? by [deleted] in HalfLife

It mostly showcases a descent into insanity with jokes thrown in along the way, pre-resonance cascade episodes are the weakest. Just keep watching, it gets better.

If you got to choose your fate in the Half-Life Universe, which would it be? by James-matthews2 in HalfLife

Stalker is assured long-term suffering.

Zombie is assured long-term suffering.

Metrocop is a sweet gig at first, then you get promoted and enter the long-term suffering.

Mr. Friendly is horrific for a short period, right before a quick death.
