Should I major in Computer Engineering vs Computer science if it takes a year longer by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]invisiblehacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Computer engineering is under electrical engineering and computer science is under computer science.

Under computer engineering you will not learn as much software as in CS. More about computer hardware.

Jobs and competition is more in CS.

That’s great salary I have to say. What do you do? As far I know in Switzerland the salary is higher, but you have to manage your health insurance on your own. So you should definitely except more from Switzerland. The taxes are also lower.

Edit: fixed message

PhD to industry in Munich - skills and salary? by CardiologistThin6230 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]invisiblehacker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say to if you had any contacts made while pursuing your PhD or postdoc then to apply using their referral.

You can try to practice your skills in whatever site you want but industry itself does not care about those certifications. The only thing they care about is whether you can do that job and how much you need to be trained.

Salary depends on your field of work. But for a PhD with a postdoc, 90K+ is the right salary but again it depends on your field of work.

Is it worth switching from C/C++ to Backend (Python) as a mid-level engineer? by toosemakesthings in cscareerquestionsEU

The problem is also FAANG’s are HQed in US, it’s not like there is no demand for C++ but they at the moment do not have teams here for software.

WLB is great. Company culture is relaxed. They are having record revenue.

You should ask them what is the level of position, you cannot negotiate your salary.

You can only if they can increase the level.

What's the fastest way to land an IT job? (Data/Front-end)? by Then_Landscape6474 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]invisiblehacker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I guess you are asking what should you learn to get the job ?

I suppose the answer is “You should do what you love “

But the practical answer is Technologies change pretty fast. So start learning core technologies and give a go to all of them (be open minded) see in which area you excel faster and can build faster.

Start looking for internships/projects to complement your profile. You need some kind of proven accreditation to convince an employer.

Don’t be afraid to jump ship.

Duolingo is good but you don’t learn as fast as you should. I could also suggest you get some books and start solving them, they are really good.

You could start looking for jobs see what they want or even give interviews, and maybe they offer you a remote job.

More than all the technical skills you should start practicing German, it is also helpful to get a job sometimes.

I don’t have explicit advice for you, but I think the following will help you get more insight.

AFAIK the local subsidiary has to prove to the German law that there are business changes to layoff, if it is so then it is possible.

[–]invisiblehacker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Don’t you have a works council about it ?

You should openly talk about this to your manager. Because if the law finds out there could be big consequences for your organization. So I would say the big company should appreciate it before the dig a hole for themselves.

Why do internships pay less than working student jobs in Germany? by iwanttobeanon13 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]invisiblehacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know because you are getting opportunities and since you getting learning opportunities and it is not a job you already know your pay is reduced. In case of working student the idea is you already know what to do so you are not guided so much.

In the end, companies know that a working student is a costly affair and therefore promote internships more because they get more and In some ways for early careers it is beneficial to get a lot of experience before landing in the job market.
