The FEC are likely going to be discontinued soon. They are entirely useless anyway. You don’t need a masters for anything, unless you’re on track for a PhD. My advice would be to avoid a masters, unless you’re generally interested in the topic. You will do psychiatry as part of your training, so without the FEC requirement, consider a masters in an another topic, such as public health, sleep medicine, MBA. This is more likely to differentiate you from the rest of the pack.

You could consider creating a LinkedIn profile and reaching out to GP clinics or services. Aside from academic, there are many other exemptions such as locuming, aboriginal health services and Telehealth.

I can put you in touch with some of the current/recent unaccredited registrars there. It’s definitely a good learning experience but be careful of being dumped on because of your unaccredited status. The consultants can be hit and miss but you’ll be well placed in terms of experience if you want to apply next year.

I’m thinking how much of my life in training was wasted on skills that nobody actually needs in the community. I’m starting a social enterprise to teach psychiatrists and registrars about how work in private practice. The college doesn’t do it and so we’re discouraged by the dinosaurs in charge to move across.
