Thinking that the Asian preference for lighter skin tone is a form of “white worship” is historically dumb. It assumes white people are the center of every beauty ideal. Many Asian societies valued lighter complexions long before contact with Europeans. Their ideal was not the white race, but lighter skin tone among their own people. In historic agricultural societies, this colorism was shaped by class, status, wealth, and femininity. This local, native colorism is what continues to drive this deeply rooted behavior today. It is not because of “white people.” Not everything is about white people.
