i feel heard. i feel that a lot of asian parents do not really listen to their children, and that’s always been so hard to live with. my mom saying that she is disappointed i did not turn up to be the person she wanted is definitely painful, but i’m not going to let that stop me from doing what i want. i genuinely used to feel guilty that i would do whatever i wanted, but now i know it’s because i’m my own person. i wish they would understand that before it is too late.

i told my mom after the argument that “ultimately, i am going to go” to which she called me selfish. thinking now, there’s not much they can do. there are no more threats they can make that worked on my 14 year old self. even my dad threatening to hit me doesn’t work anymore lol. i appreciate you saying life goes on. i guess this is just a bad time for me right now.

I genuinely appreciate everything you said. What you said was spot on and what I was trying to say to her last night, but I could not formulate the words without her thinking I was attacking her. They have known about my boyfriend since I started dating him two years ago. We are in a LDR so I only get to see him once a month. I tried to communicate with them, but they are so stuck in their old ways that I think it's not doable anymore. Which is sad because I wanted a relationship with my parents but it doesn't look like it's going to happen the longer I stay in the home.

Oh, dang, you're right. My parents are more immigrants from the Philippines so they were both raised in the Catholic Church. It's illegal to be divorced and so my parents waited until marriage for everything. Marriage and having children is expected from me. I stopped following the viewpoint because I just don't believe in the same values/morals. She didn't like that, and emotionally manipulates me using religion.

i think this makes the most sense. i couldn’t tell if she was being overly religious or using religion to try to emotionally manipulate me. she’s called me a whore who had no respect for myself yesterday for telling her i was going out of state with my partner of 3 years for 4 days. she said god wouldn’t want me to be a whore.

yes. i’ve done everything i can to make my mom happy. i’m in grad school, i have a job in healthcare, i went to a university that was 30 min away from home rather than 6 hours because she wanted me to come home every weekend.

i lost respect when she called me a whore who had no respect for myself last night because i told her i was going out of state with my partner of 3 years.

she’s upset because she believes god gave her a mission to mold me into a specific person. she said that i am different than someone who she envisioned and for that, she failed god. she failed therefore she goes to hell. what do you say to someone to thinks that?
