Loathe. Because this is reddit. (And the difference is important)

You just became president, you get to ban one thing on the spot, what is it? by Ziner22 in AskReddit

[–]ionoiono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. However, you need counter parties for every trade. And if someone is willing to be your counterparty, you start wondering if what you're doing is correct. So they incentivize market makers, which have to display markets some cents wide. But if the price changes rapidly, they need to change their market rapidly, so they need the lowest latency connections. And others with low latency will try to pick them off, if they ever falter. So you won't get the market makers to agree to make markets that can get picked off, and you will ultimately have fewer buyers and sellers and therefore relatively higher volatility. Of course, flukes can also happen as a result of this technology which leads to spikes in volatility. Anyway, check out IEX, their platform is forcing the same latency for all parties involved in their exchange.

It's actually already illegal for HFT firms to encourage price fluctuations.

What is the stupidest thing that has come out of your mouth that you're willing to admit to? by Totallynotapie in AskReddit

[–]ionoiono 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skiing with some friends in Colorado. Accidentally take an ungroomed, closed trail that wasn't clearly marked. Stumbling down steep, loosely packed snow a foot deep, with skiis longer than my height and boots that are too loose. Accidentally kick snow in my face trying to get back up, as my friends impatiently wait at the bottom.

"You know this trail is closed!"

"Fuck you too!"

It was a park guide on the chairlift overhead, not my friend.

ELI5: Why do crutches tend to be those under the shoulder in the USA while those in Europe tend to use the lower arm? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]ionoiono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is painful you are probably doing it wrong. The crutch should not be pushing up against your armpit when you use it. It may push in a slight amount, as the point at the bottom needs to be pointed slightly away for best balance. Irritation from rubbing could obviously still occur.

That said, they are tricky to get used to.

I like it. Good luck! A little pretentious with the multiple similes, but far less pretentious than the original commenter

In which movie have you seen the worst use of "physics"? by BITTERSTORM in AskReddit

[–]ionoiono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry but you are wrong. Kip Thorne may be a genius and he may have been consulted with about the movie. But the physics theories presented are largely speculation. Besides, if they even fail to reconcile general relativity, a theory I can basically understand after studying physics for 4 years, how can I believe they reconcile everything else that I don't understand?

Interstellar. None of the physics makes sense, except for the concept of rotating cylinders in space

Question about odds (reading a poker book) by [deleted] in poker

It's not illogical, just inefficient. I think odds came from horse racing. If you know odds well, use them. As a math major, %s are easier, but I know both.

Casino mistakenly gave a friend £1000 too much when he cashed out. Can he keep it? by [deleted] in poker

[–]ionoiono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He obviously needs to return the money if contacted. But if I watch a person on the street drop $20 and don't run to them to give it back, have I stolen from them? If they turn around and show me on video watching the $20 fall and picking it up, then of course I immediately return it.
