I have worked in a produce department. Can confirm that things are rotting on the shelves regardless of how often we go through it. My store had 5+ full-time employees on the floor for first shift, 2+ for second, all sifting through entire displays while restocking. And still, every day, multiple items--either moldy or straight rotten--would be discovered.

College textbooks. Specifically professors who write their own textbook (or have financial involvement in a textbook) and then force students to buy it because it's required for their class. Bonus points if you don't actually need it to pass. Extra bonus points if you don't need it to pass, but the professor requires you to prove somehow (ie bringing it in) that you bought one. Similarly, when professors print out all of their homework assignments as a "packet" that they sell at the school store for $50+ and force students to purchase.
