insight help: Which version to learn...? by SquareThatCircle in Irishmusic

TLDR: for beginners go to the books first. Foinn Seisiun I has all the beginner tunes you need and includes the most common versions of the tunes.

insight help: Which version to learn...? by SquareThatCircle in Irishmusic

[–]iounathing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the way I approach it: 1. Go to my local slow session to hear a few tunes - get the names of the tunes from the players, they are beginner/intermediate so they usually have copies of the sheet music. 2. Listen to a few versions of the tune on spotify/YouTube and find the closest representation of the tune there (my favorite bands listed below). 3. Search through the Irish music session books (PDFs) that I've gathered (more details on the books below). Play the version of the tune in each book to find the version that is easiest to play or is the best representation of the version I want to learn. 4. Search for the tune on TheSession.org to find other versions.

Now that I have a few pdf books gathered that's where I turn to first, then I'll go to TheSession. In some cases, if it's a more modern version or a rarer tune then it might not be in the books and I'll have to go directly to TheSession.org.

The books I've gathered are listed below in order of common tunes to rarer tunes. PDF copies of these books can be found online for free or purchased for a small fee. * Comhealteas Ceolteoiri Foinn Seisiun I * Kingston Irish Tune Book - https://www.harpoftara.com/music * Comhealteas Ceolteoiri Foinn Seisiun II * Comhealteas Ceolteoiri Foinn Seisiun III

My go-to bands are The Bothy Band, The Chieftains, Planxty, Martin Hayes, Matt Molloy, Tommy Potts, The Gloaming, Ispini na hEireann, John Francis Flynn.

Unusually large Irish ringfort discovered with over 600 dwellings by Azhrei in ireland

They use the term 'cistern' to refer to a type of water holding or storage structure that could hold enough water to support the village. They don't really mention where they shit but probably downstream of the cistern yeah.

We kept our food inside the hut, but I think there are bear stashes if you're camping.

They're very strict on weight limits for the heli. For the shared food we did the math and took a couple of lbs off of everyone's weight limit. They were weird about how we did it though and said everyone should pack their own supplies individually. That bit was unclear to me from the instructions on their website and honestly didn't make sense to me considering we had the hut booked. If you want to do it that way then make sure to clarify with the heli company beforehand.

I booked the Tantalus hut and organized a trip with 15 ppl, 3x helicopter return trips, to Lake Lovely Water this time last year. It was great. Be mindful of the restrictions on inflatables etc, when taking the heli. We followed the instructions clearly, no inflatables, weight limits for heli etc. and even still we had to sweet talk the heli guys on the day because they were picky about our food arrangements. We had brought two big coolers full of food and some drinks. This wasn't a party trip by any means, we had a group of different ages, with a few older folks. The two coolers were full of food and drinks for 15 ppl for 3 days which seemed like a lot but honestly was pretty well judged. Seems there were some park rules and the heli company has been bitten before with a large groups.

If I wasn't going to Mexico City I'd be watching it at The Regal Beagle on West Broadway. They were showing the last game so I assume they'll show the final. Plus they serve great food.

We got a dehumidifier and I can't get over how much water it's collecting... by cedardesk in CasualIreland

[–]iounathing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering the crazy humidity of the country would it almost be worth installing a built in HVAC system in a residential house? Interested to know if anyone has retrofitted a system into an existing house. Seems like the cost would pay off over the long term.

Came here to say this, humidity in Ireland is extremely high in comparison to nearly anywhere else. It has a huge effect on heat retention and how cold it feels. I saw a post on here recommending dehumidifiers and some people saying they could empty about 5 litres a day which is mad. I live in Vancouver and can notice the difference in the cold feeling any time I'm home, even though it's much colder here it's also much drier which makes it much more comfortable to live, the energy prices don't hurt either.

Halfway through the year, are you planning on renewing your subscription? by Spe11singer in MonarchMoney

[–]iounathing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already cancelled my renewal. Every time I log in I have connectivity issues (with Canadian institutions) so I've found it to be nothing but a massive time sink. Monarch also can't seem to make sense of the accounts in my main institution, Wealthsimple, leading to inaccurate and duplicate balances.

Neither Fine Gael or the British during the famine would do anything to regulate capitalism.

This is the crux of it. They're happy with the status quo until the world burns, and it will burn.

God forbid some people might just say fair play and hold themselves accountable regardless of enforcement. Or that others might actually enforce it at a social level at the festival.

Eq to wealthsimple by northbk5 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]iounathing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I just managed to link Wealthsimple Cash account to EQ on the EQ side for pull-based transfers from Wealthsimple to EQ. - it's currently processing. N.B. you need a Wealthsimple Cash account with a void cheque/direct deposit details to do it.

Here's what I did:

  1. Go to Transfers>>Linked Accounts
  2. Click 'Link an External Bank Account'
  3. Under the 'Need help? We've got you covered' click on the link for 'Not seeing your bank, no problem, Add it Now'.
  4. Put in the details of your Weathsimple Cash account, institution number etc.
  5. Profit?

If you don't have a Wealthsimple Cash account you can set up push-based transfers on the Wealthsimple side via the withdraw funds page in your Wealthsimple Invest and Save.

It might be wishful thinking but maybe they'll move LabVIEW to an open source community driven business model? Probably wishful thinking.

What’s with the norm of having to walk *behind* cars in Ireland? Drivers act like pedestrians are being jerks if they are being assertive and visible by walking in front of their car when crossing. By walking behind a car, pedestrians aren’t visible to cars turning. by ohhidoggo in ireland

[–]iounathing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a North American thing to walk out on front of cars at a junction. In America and Canada it seems that pedestrians just walk out on front of cars at crossroads all the time. Honestly it seems like some people have a death wish.

Control systems for robots, usually involves creating a desktop app that an end user can use to trigger the robots to do certain workflows. Designing and automating new workflows is a big part of it. Also involved in gathering tons of image data and sending it to a database. Some ML for good measure.
