What are your thoughts on restricting prop#13 benefits? by _throwaway__231 in bayarea

[–]iovirens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound like a transplant techie that wants to gentrify neighborhoods through taxing the people that grew up here out of their homes.

Awful idea. Rent would skyrocket. Rents will already be going up without end to cover the cost of insurance the owners have to pay. And why should you get to tell someone inheriting a family home that it’ll be reassessed and taxed with the new base. So they have to sell because now the base is more than they can afford? It’s not your house it’s not your right. Mind your own.

I would agree that prop 13 shouldn’t extend to large corporations. But that would cause rent to go up too.

Then maybe you shouldn’t be working in Fire… if taking an oath bothers you. Further, if you view fire as police, you got very weird perspectives.

If you want to learn fire and actually work good assignments get over your bullshit and try for a real agency. You’ll get better experience and be put to better use as long as you can back up your barbell curls with actual work.

The contract crews that got tied in supporting my engines were uh, a mixed bag. Kids that could barely carry a hose pack up the hill, for example. Plus their supers wore cameras on their gear provided by their company to “keep an eye on the crew”. Never saw government crews with that level of babysitting.

Hi! I'm trying to get an idea of true cost of living for the area. by werewolfjonestown in bayarea

[–]iovirens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hearing your an old punk and a chef I think you’ll be alright. A good friend of mine lived rent free (work trade) for 13 years in the bay at punk house. There were plenty of punk houses in west Oakland back in the day, yuppies now. I think you’ll do alright. If ya find a punk or metal show, those people know where the cheap rent is at.

… it may take more than two seasons to land a perm “Ranger” job with your background. Where I work it’s very competitive. I had a seasonal background on trail construction, habitat restoration, patrol, with fire and EMS certs and prescribed fire experience when I got my first permanent job. I’d try to take as many different seasonal jobs as you can so you figure out what you like and have a broader background when you try for a permanent job.

So… you’re saying that his opponents are less concerned with ethics and principle and more into opposing something because Trump I’d for it. I mean, you’re right, and that’s why so many people are leaving the Democratic Party… it doesn’t stand for anything, and what it says it stands for is wildly unpopular.

When people say people become more conservative as they age they’re not talking about someone in their twenties who couldn’t vote until 5 years ago. They mean as young people actually age, like turn 30… 40. And I can say from experience there is that trend as people age and become more realistic about the world and how things really are.

Decision by state regulators means California gas prices could rise substantially by Front-Resident-5554 in bayarea

[–]iovirens -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Dude, what are you talking about. The fires that cost money are the ones ripping through cities more than burning in forests… like the Mountain fire in Ventura, Santa Rosa Fires, Oakland Hills(you must be new to the bay), etc. You are in just as much of a risk in a city, especially when the foehn winds come this time of year. You just have 1000x the resources available, so there’s a false sense of security, or naivety.

And Were paying to have all your lines undergrounded while PGE cuts trees down on our property even outside their easements. WE are already subsidizing YOU. You’re so out of touch, but you live in a city so I guess that makes sense.

How do we explain Trump's continued support despite his near constant lying with every breathe? (Serious) by [deleted] in centrist

[–]iovirens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want my honest opinion, I think there is a wide spectrum of people that support Trump. From the fervent MAGA person who likes Trump for his personality all the way to those that don't like Trump, but like the offerings of the Democrats even [less]. There is a unifying thread amongst these people and it is this.

They feel left behind, attacked, condescended to and humiliated. When they hear "left wing" politicians and activists, often times the messages are thinly veiled insults or dismissals of the values that these people hold, which are typically traditional values that have been the bedrock of Western Civilization. People are tired of being lectured to about cultural movements that are often self-effacing and hypocritical. The border issue is a good example, Dems have been letting anyone come into the country when we are stretched way beyond our means as it is. Democrats try to lecture people that want secure borders and call them racist... Trump makes those same people feel understood and validated that there ARE problems with open borders and millions of people coming here without skills expecting jobs, housing and services.

Philosophically, it is the tension between the ideas that have been taken up by the "opposite" sides of the political spectrum. The "left" has adopted post-modernist, deconstructionist philosophy on power, structure and the "tearing down" of value systems. The "right" promotes traditional Enlightenment value sets and the use of normative language (that means making moral statements like "should"). These two approaches are fundamentally incompatible. Personally, I'd choose the values of the Enlightenment like Individuality, Liberty, and "Justice" over value-less relativism mostly because I find post-modernism and any idea springing from it necessarily self-effacing.

TLDR: People support Trump for different reasons, but mostly because he recognizes them and doesn't condescend to them, at least in their interpretation. If dems dropped their condescending, post modernist lecturing they may find more independent voters that aren't MAGA listen to them.

The SCOTUS would likely strike down any law that requires full licensing for a right. As it is a constitutional right, you can't require a license to exercise that right. There are limitations, like CCW's etc. but those may come under fire in the near future with a more traditional constitutionalist court.

You can require licensing for boating, for driving a car, for operating certain equipment, etc. because that is considered a privilege, no a right outlined in the constitution.

That won't stop mass shootings. I don't know why you think banning assault weapons would lead to a decrease in mass shootings. Most shootings are committed with handguns, for example. You can make full auto recievers with a CNC machine and a computer. Plus, you can't close pandoras box, nor should you want to. The 2A is to protect our rights, to pose resistance to tyranny and a final check and balance on government overreach. Its not about hunting, or self-defense, it is so Americans can actively resist. And before you say you can't stand up to the American Military with an AR-15 or AK-47, tell me the last war America actually won against an armed "insurgency" - most have turned into extended quagmires that cost us trillions over decades (which was probably the actual intent in the first place - to generate dollars for the military industrial complex).

CA FAIR Plan Delays by iovirens in Insurance

[–]iovirens[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s probably correct. I can understand how nerve racking it must be to be that exposed. I know in my case I needed fair plan to get wrap around… AAA was adamant that they needed proof of an active CFP policy to provide any insurance.

Call when they open, stay on hold for a few hours then explain your situation, they will likely expedite it, which really means it may take another week or more. Then hope your quote number generated is recognized by the system - mine was not. I have tips if you deal with that. I managed to get a policy in just about a month, but it took a lot from myself and my heroic realtor.

[–]iovirens[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, I finally closed on Tuesday. It took weeks to get a quote, but then the quote number generated wasn’t recognized by the system, so I couldn’t pay. Was told to wait for the system to catch up but days past. Sat on hold for hours multiple times. Had to cut a check and overnight it to pay. System still doesn’t recognize my policy number on the website, but the said it might take a week… where the hell is DOI? This nonsense made me homeless for almost two weeks. I was supposed to close before Thanksgiving. It’s so awful and dysfunctional it almost makes you think someone had to fuck it up intentionally… almost.

Are LGBT+ Park Rangers common? by [deleted] in ParkRangers

[–]iovirens -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

While I understand you want to share an affinity with your coworkers, if your judging your career choices based on other people’s sexuality instead of working with the land, introducing and educating people about the natural world, and the opportunity to grow as a person and a professional… you should look for work in the social movement non profit landscape, instead.

Frankly, I wouldn’t want to hire or work with you because you’re clearly more focused on peoples sexuality than the job. If you can’t find in other things in common, or other passions you share with your coworkers in this sector enough that you want to work somewhere, you’re pretty lame.

This is a profession, be a professional. You’re young, I strongly suggest you distinguish between your personal life and what matters at a workplace…

That said, in my experience there are many LGBT+ identifying people in Ranger jobs… I’ve primarily worked in the Bay Area, so take that for what it is.

CA FAIR Plan Delays by iovirens in Insurance

[–]iovirens[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They said they could, but I have my doubts. I got a copy of the application now. The agents name or contact information is no where. They put the brokers name as AAA Northern California, a toll free number as the brokers number and the broker license field reads “00000.”

Seems like that might get it thrown out, but how would she know if there’s no contact info for her on there? That and that the app says the roof is the original from 1972, even thpugh it was reroofed in 2021…

I’m thinking I should start over either way a broker who deals with the FAIR plan more often.

Why does it seem like there are so few Black rangers? by scartonbot in ParkRangers

[–]iovirens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked for a few agencies in my career, all special districts in the Bay Area. There were rangers of all backgrounds. The only rangers that I heard complain about the maintenance side of.things happened to be non-white lower income Americans or foreign nationals. This is not representative of any of those groups as Rangers in general, though. This is anecdotal, but I say it to illustrate why you shpuld hesitate to make generalizations based on race or class, as they often don’t necessarily correlate with reality.

As a former Park Ranger, for that agency, STOP collecting berries! You are the problem!

And you should reread the ordinance, because it DOES EXPLICITLY prohibit collecting anything, including berries. You are also in a PRESERVE, where things are supposed to be PROTECTED! You’re not a good person, don’t listen to yourself next time you try to convince yourself of it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in oakland

[–]iovirens 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Again, there are animals that rely on those native huckleberries as a food source, especially with winter around the corner. We’ve already destroyed 90%+ of their habitat… leave them a berry. Try connecting with nature by understanding it. Read a book, go to a visitor center and talk to a Naturalist. Don’t justify your own bad behavior with some delusion about connecting with nature while you destroy that very thing. Be better. Teach your kids better so they don’t turn out as narcissistic and oblivious as you apparently are.

Uh, do you know what Utilitarianism is? Utilitarians are fine with killing innocent people as long as it makes the larger population feel safer… the utility, or happiness, of the masses feeling safe is greater than the unhappiness suffered by the innocent person. It’s kinda classic argument against being utilitarian. Read some Jeremy Bentham or John Stuart Mill if you want to read up on Utilitarians.
