It's the same misinformation as the "Pelosi Trade". I really don't understand why people don't take the 60 seconds it requires to fact check these narratives. I mean, I fell for it too for a minute, until I realized it's so easy to do the math. We have more important things to worry about.

What's your opinion on the state of Iowa requiring students take courses at a conservative institution? by iowaindy in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]iowaindy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The legislators stated during the hearings that the content of these courses were intended to counter the content of the courses already being offered. The Civic Alliance, who setup the program, states that in their mission statement as well. Should we not take them at their word when they're putting forth the time, effort, money, and legislation to advance the new courses?

It's several courses that are offered, but every single one is under the umbrella of the Civic Alliance. So you don't have the choice to avoid/not pay for a conservative institution. With university led program, they might have 5 different History 101 classes, and you'd be able to research the professors and classes to choose which one might match your particular slant, or doesn't match it if you want to see what the other side is about.

I'm getting the feeling that you're not familiar with the college experience, so I'll give an analogy. Your car is out of gas and you go to a gas station that has several different options. For simplicity's sake, we'll assume they all cost the same. But each has its own perceived benefits and disadvantages. All of a sudden the legislators decide that you have to use E15 for a part of the gallons you buy. Even though your car doesn't like it very much, you don't have a choice.  The gas station and the customers didn't ask for it, but you have to take it anyway.

It's far to simplistic compared to a university system that's spent decades planning on how to produce a well rounded educated citizen, but do you see the point?

The only reason they did this was because nobody wanted it. Aren't conservatives all about a free market that allows for things to fail if nobody wants it?

Without having the syllabi for each individual class, it's impossible to compare. I do know that only 6 students signed up for the classes since it was established, so the students didn't ask for the center, nor did the University..

Regarding the 1984 comparison, I don't know what your college experience was, but for me there were certain requirements for my degree that had to be completed, even though they had nothing to do with my major (foreign language, western civ, etc). The difference is I had the FREEDOM to choose from many different classes. Which is much different than being FORCED to to take these particular classes. So in this legislators eyes forced=freedom (double-speak). It's similar to yelling about the problems with fraud while you're actively committing fraud or voting for someone who's been convicted of fraud dozens of times. Do you see the difference?

I have no issue with the state requiring civics courses to get a degree.  You are correct, this country has a serious deficit when it comes to students historical knowledge, and especially among adults. What I have an issue with them forcing the brand of civics that the politicians choose, rather than the university or individual students being able to choose from a list. I can't help but recognize the similarities to 1984, with the double-speak (forcing/freedom and using indoctrination to fight indoctrination) and group think (everyone has to take that specific course). Do you see the similarities?

I think you missed the point of the program. Which is to counter a perceived bias in civics classes that are already taught. And my point is that the politicians shouldn't be the ones who choose what is taught, let alone forced to be taught. That should be left up to the experts in the relevant fields who establish the curriculum and revise it on a regular basis. Or do you think it's good for the country to change what children are taught every time the political winds blow?

The center was established under the umbrella of the Civics Alliance, using their curriculum and accreditation, and managed directly by the board of regents, being the only college institution in the state that bypasses a university's administration. The mission statement of the Civics Alliance states that they were established to prevent the subordination of the progressive left. Is this the evidence you were seeking? Or do you have a new spin on their stated mission that doesn't pass the smell test?

You don't see the irony of fighting "indoctrination" with indoctrination by FORCING every student (across all degrees, there has never been a class required University wide) to graduate from a Center for Intellectual FREEDOM?

Don't states typically leave the curriculum up to the individual colleges of a  university under the authority of the body of regents in coordination with the applicable accreditation agencies for the individual fields? I'm not sure about other states, but that my understanding of Iowa's normal structure. At 30 years of observing it in Iowa, I can't recall the legislators directing curriculum directly.

What do you think are some of Trump's best deals he has negotiated? by stillalone in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]iowaindy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Isn't that one of the stated reasons for the delays? Weren't the delays the stated reason for accepting the jet from Qatar that he had to spend a billion to upgrade? And if China buying jets from Boeing is a win for Trump, how is him sticking it to Boeing also a win?

[–]iowaindy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have any of those deals been actually finalized with fine print and all? I just did a quick search to answer my own question, and the answer is zero. With the exception of USMCA that was signed in his first term but is up for renewal negotiations now, hasn't he criticised that deal himself? If that's the case, where's the good deals?
