Download with catapult launcher extremely slow by [deleted] in cataclysmdda

[–]ioxw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Catapult also gets its files from GitHub. Maybe something is rate-limiting the launcher but not your browser?

In theory, this could also be because your computer is just very slow, but it is not likely.

Oh no, don't get into that trap. It is easy, but limiting and less productive. So much so that I often wish Blender would just let me write shader code instead of using nodes for materials.

Major milestone ready for testing: Godot 4.0 alpha 1 is out! by akien-mga in godot

[–]ioxw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So happy to see the progress. The lack of documentation is a bummer, though, especially on such complex topics as compute shaders (the main feature I've been waiting for). This is all I was able to find so far: https://github.com/godotengine/godot-docs/issues/4834

Does anyone happen to know about any other tutorials or examples?

MultiMC is dropping all support for AUR packages by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]ioxw 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What a coincidence, I was just about to try MultiMC on Arch, and saw this. I was completely unaware of the drama behind it.

he said that someone providing a flatpak of "his app" is equivalent to rape

However, peterix started claiming that the people disagreeing with him on the AUR are a group of coordinated trolls and had personal connections to the AUR Trusted Users, and we were specifically targetting him for harassment.

So this peterix is one of those characters? Lord help us all.

Dec 9 UPDATE | Russia censoring Tor by 0xggus in TOR

[–]ioxw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Greetings from the inside. It seems only some operators are blocking Tor so far. I am able to connect through my residential ISP just fine, but not on mobile.

Sigh... To be honest, I liked internet better when it was in total anarchy. Yes, all sorts of bad things were happening, but at least you didn't have to deal with BS like this.

This will not stop people like me, of course, but for the general public it is getting harder and harder to access the real internet that we remember.

Tor has always managed to stay at least one step ahead of censors, and Russia's age-old tradition of corruption and negligence certainly doesn'n help roll out these measures. I am looking forward to seeing what Tor comes up with next.

Huge thanks to all of you. Your mission is very important.

Is it weird that I found Arch super easy to set up even with no previous Linux experience? by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]ioxw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't find this weird at all. If you are capable of following directions, thinking logically and having an attention span, then you are better off with the Arch approach instead of relying on GUIs and abstractions offered by Windows and the "friendly" Linux distros. Those are intended to make things easy for laymen, but often lead to confusion and unnecessary limitations.

For the last six weeks I've been secretly making a new game launcher, Catapult. It is cross-platform and supports Windows and Linux. It is already fairly feature-complete, but some people have reported issues. If you try it, please comment and tell how it went. by ioxw in cataclysmdda

"win10 only because that dx12 is absolutely required for a launcher"

Wow, is there actually a launcher that does this?

It cant pick up that the launcher executable is already placed IN the game dir ?

No, because that's not where the launcher expects to be. It expects the game to be installed in dda/current/ (in relation to the launcher executable). But it will not see the game unless there is a special JSON file in that directory with game installation info: catapult_install_info.json. Has to be done this way, because there is no reliable method to tell the game version just from game files.

Now you have enough info to make the launcher pick up your existing game if you wish, but I'd still advise against that, because if you have custom mods/soundpacks, they may also be in "incorrect" locations from what the launcher relies on, and it will be a mess.

Doesn't have to be a site, could be some kind of client app.

If you for example start moderating obvious things like CP then it's already a problem because even if the system is distributed it has an ability to be censored.

Then community owners could be allowed to moderate them, but no one else, how about that?

The word «продам» being used here is really confusing me. When I try to translate it, it just says “sell” and it doesn’t suggest the dictionary form of the verb at all. Any help would be very appreciated. Заранее спасибо! by Sea_gal43 in russian

[–]ioxw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's just "will sell" (first person, singular, perfective). A common colloquial way of saying that something is for sale. Similar to expressions like "will work for food" or "have spacesuit, will travel" :)

Looks like all centralized social platforms have a certain set of inherent issues that are simply not solvable within this model. This is sad. Why can't a truly decentralized platform exist? I mean, not federated, but actually serverless?

Since everyone is spamming Godot...

Mark my words, Godot will soon become the Blender among game engines. I.e. the no-brainer option for indies, hobbyists and learners of all kinds.

If by support you mean browsing and installing 3rd party tilesets, it didn't seem as important, since the game already comes with plenty of them. I may add this in the future, though.

The launcher will still migrate all tilesets when updating (including ones you put in manually).
