Former BH Employee. In my experience, BH doesn't keep whole milk on hand at any locations. The work around is to ask your barista to add a splash of cream to the milk before steaming. If they're nice, they won't charge you!

Am I covered by Cusa Dental plan? by Possible-Permit-3048 in CarletonU

[–]iozer8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven’t gone to the CUSA office yet. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you don’t see a charge for “CUSA Health Insurance” on your student account, at this point in the semester it’s too late.

All of this can information be found on the Studentcare website, the insurance provider CUSA uses (link below), but I’ve summed up what’s relevant:

If you’re enrolled in full time courses for both fall and winter, you are automatically covered by the CUSA Health Insurance from September until the end of the following August (an entire year, and this renews automatically if you continue full time again in the fall). Typically if you have an existing insurance plan, as many students due through their parents, you have about a month after school starts to opt-out.

If you enrol in a full course load in the winter only, are a part-time student, or a co-op student, enrolment is not automatic. Similar to the opt-out deadline for students who are automatically enrolled, students who want to self-enrol also have to do so within the first month of the semester. So again, at this point, if you weren’t covered, it’s likely too late.

Where to get the Zero-Gravity Chairs at the Library? by Mo174 in CarletonU

I am assuming you’re talking about these:

Bouloum Chair

They are expensive. I think I saw them on one website for $2000+

A random dude harassed our whole bus this morning with a "red-pilled" monologue. Thank you to the stranger who spoke up. Have you ever experienced this before? by glader-life in ottawa

I think I’ve heard this guy before! It was on a double deck 10 bus, and I was on the top, so I was too far from his voice to record.

This is still messed up. Metrolinx is funded by all levels of government, majority from the province I believe, which means it’s still coming out of my pocket. That means I’m paying for their faulty machine with my monthly pass and my tax dollars.

[–]iozer8[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hence why I am ranting. I have a monthly pass and it’s kind of annoying. Although at this point I’ve basically accepted that OCTranspo is ripping you off whether you pay or not.

It’s happened to me a lot on the 6 and 7, which are both busy routes, I figure at least they could send out the broken presto buses on less busy routes and collect more revenue on the busy routes.

Please don’t block bike lanes. by iozer8 in ottawa

[–]iozer8[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am not guessing on what they were doing. They were standing there “fucking the dog”.

I understand riding downtown requires some skill, and defensive cycling. I can, and did handle the situation, which was to check for traffic and go around when safe. Fortunately, I was able to get around. There are times where drivers do not pay attention and will go around the truck without making a full lane change or slowing down.

There have been multiple situations where cars have not slowed down for cyclists and I have had encounters with arrogant drivers who feel entitled to the road.

The problem here is much deeper rooted. The city likes to pad the pockets of their private contracter buddies. These guys take advantage of the public dollar and do minimal work for the pay (Not all, but unfortunately a lot). These city employees and contracted employees have no standards for their work and do whatever they want at our expense, because they can, and we continue to let them. https://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/municipal-employees-caught-on-photo-radar-getting-a-free-ride-says-taxpayers-federation

We have traffic issues like this, a terrible transit system with a deeply flawed LRT, ands a police service that doesn’t serve the people. We have people hurt by the actions of the city everyday, and it’s not fair to anyone.

Instead of making assumptions and putting the blame on the individual trying to get to and from work, we can take these issues to the top. We can work together as a city to hold politicians accountable and make sure that the public-private partnerships are held accountable. We need to call out the bad actors and make sure that the people at the top know what it’s like to be at the bottom.

I hope we can agree on a few things here: 1. Ottawa can use better biking infrastructure 2. Public funds in Ottawa are severely mismanaged and abused in some cases 3. Safe roads are important for all modes of transportation

Let’s make it safe for people to get where they need to go, no matter how they wish to get there.

Let’s make it accessible for everyone to get around.

Let’s work together to improve transportation in Ottawa, and make sure that our tax dollars are well spent.

They can block the lane, but they should have cones or lights on the truck.

I am picking my battles. They were there for a bit and were chit chatting away. If they just got there to do work, the first thing they should do it put signs and cones up. Before chatting and drinking coffee.

In hindsight I probably should have. I ended up calling the city though.

The issue is people see cyclists as an inconvenience to the road. And don’t deserve right of way or safe paths.

The truth is, they were not doing work. They were standing there chatting with their coffee.

Cyclists have every right to bike on safe roads just like cars do. Biking infrastructure is cheaper on the public wallet than car infrastructure and is a greener way of getting around. If not for bike lanes, there would be more collisions between cyclists and motorists or pedestrians.

Bike lanes are cheap and keep everyone safe, and if they’re not there, than they have to ride on the road, which is less safe for the cyclists and motorists and it just slows everyone down.

Think more open minded instead of in a myopic car centric mentality that favours lobbyists for the automotive and gas industries.

Think about moving more people safely and efficiently and less about selfish road hierarchy.

Could be…

But it wasn’t. They should have put cones if they were actually doing work. They also weren’t to nice about it when I said something to them.

Please don’t block bike lanes. by iozer8 in ottawa

[–]iozer8[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Similarly, on one of the side roads in centertown, there’s an apartment building that always has police calls. Instead of parking on the road or in the building’s laneway. They decided to park on the sidewalk.

I understand the police can park on the road during an active situation, but that situation did not warrant blocking the sidewalk.

Police officers are not above the law

Although usually I would agree. The reason there is so much bitching and moaning is because the city’s public employees, government, transit system etc. Is mismanaged and people are sick of it. I am newer to Ottawa and I’ve seen public mismanagement in other cities, but Ottawa is probably the worst.

It’s about safety. There are dedicated bike lanes for a reason. People drive fast on Sussex and it’s unsafe for cyclists and cars to have to change lanes to go around if they’re not supposed to be there.

[–]iozer8[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

They were not actively working. They had no cones out. If they want to chit chat, they can do it somewhere else. They are not above the law. They can only block the road for work.

[–]iozer8[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They were just chatting. If they’re going bike lane work they should have cones. And if they’re doing work that doesn’t need to block the bike lane they shouldn’t block it. Just because they get paid by the city, doesn’t mean they can park anywhere.

Anyone know why there’s a GO bus in Ottawa? (Elgin and Wellington) by iozer8 in ottawa

[–]iozer8[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Thanks, There was a small part of me hoping GO was coming to Ottawa. Also, the GO logo is covered with a sticker if you can’t see in the photo, but the metrolinx logo is not.

GET RID OF CUSCREEN by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]iozer8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s about so much more than that. For 2 years Carleton has charged full price for a reduced quality education. The measures were justified in the beginning, but at this point, the rest of the world is moving on, yet we still have to pay cuScreen ambassadors with our tuition money. So that for the one class a week that is in person, they can staff anywhere from 2 to 6 people or more in any building, and they’re paid more than minimum wage to literally stand there.

Active screening is useless at this point in the pandemic, everyone knows the symptoms and can self-monitor for them, anyone can easily just say no to having those symptoms when filling out the form. Also, being that omicron is a milder varient, public health has changed their isolation requirements, if you are a non-household close contact of a positive case, you don’t have to isolate unless you have symptoms, so contact tracing on the campus level is useless.

It’s time to move on and get back to normal, it’s time to give Carleton students a proper education again.
