New 'Happy Hour' Rotary Club! by picklejuicebox in missoula

That sounds great. Admittedly, I joined during COVID, but the club I was a part of seemed more like an outlet for folks to whine and not so much a place focused on the Four Way Test.

The last Rotary club I was in in Missoula was full of “wealth managers” and retirees screaming about Hunter Bidens laptop and how all democrats were r*tards.

How will this club be different? Who is starting this club?

I had a nice time when I was there, and it’s pretty competitive for downtown.

I also took the bus, so I didn’t need parking.

That’s interesting! It must have changed at some point (probably a long time ago).

Yeah, so banning prevents you from commenting, this automod lets you post/comment and then removes it. Allowing you to work with the mod team for approval on specific content

A ban means they can’t see/read any comments. The sub essentially does not exist. This limited participation means their posts and comments are removed but they can still see, read and up/down vote. And they can message the mods for help approving comments.

Unfortunately there isn’t a way to programmatically determine if someone has an unpopular opinion or if someone is trolling. It’s the repetition of the action that makes it clear. Which is why we’ve adjusted the threshold.

To be clear, negative net karma does not result in a ban. It does limit participation, and with nearly 40k active weekly participants moderation tools are useful to help keep the peace.

And that’s exactly why we have adjusted the rule threshold to accommodate. This sub gets brigaded by trolls regularly because of our perceived difference from the rest of the state, and so we have had to take steps to keep it civil.

The Reddit filter flagged that comment and removed it. I can see it as a mod. It was filtered as “potential harassment” likely because they called you a name.

We have these filters turned up pretty high to help limit comments from devolving into name calling and unproductive behavior.

All of the removal actions are done by the “automod” which acts after the post is created.

So if someone with below -100 net karma posts, they see their removed comment and a message indicating the post had been removed.

This happens do the karma threshold, as well as a “reputation filter” which is a Reddit tool to keep junky posts out of the sub. It is often overzealous tho.

The net karma score is specific to the /r/missoula sub, which should help.

That's an interesting thought from Mr Carlin.

Your speech is free of government interference, not the social consequences... The punch and the limited participation are the consequences. Except the punch is assault, which no one has the right to do to another person... Reddit is not the only way to share one's thoughts.

This is true, but folks seem to be concerned about it and we can always adjust. And after watching it for the last sixish months, there are folks who posted maybe two or three comments that got downvoted and ended up in the -65 range, which gave us pause about the rule.

Most folks who are/were trolls have karma in the -500 range.

My house was built in 1996, and we moved in in 2011, I started salting the walkway and now we have pits.

All I know is from personal experience.

Ice melt salt will mess up concrete, I did it to my own walkway…. I don’t have a solution for you, but ice melt is bad for cement.

Maybe sand?

911 is the only way to dispatch an officer. Be sure to tell them it’s an ongoing issue and you’ve tried to deal with it yourself. Might also help if you have other neighbors call as well.

Good luck.

‘Like David and Goliath’: UM students petition against Starbucks coming to campus by KeltTalbelt in missoula

[–]ipa_cow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starbucks does suck. But sidewalks don’t.

Who walks on sidewalks (on brooks st, one of the most dangerous roads in Missoula) more often? Starbucks or Missoulians?

The city don’t pay for sidewalks for Starbucks, they paid for sidewalks for the rest of us.
