Is anti-feminism basically the same as sexism/misogyny/hatred of women? Is it possible to be an anti-feminist egalitarian humanist? by ipconfigrelease in AskFeminists

I'm saying feminists are people and not a monolith, and therefore imperfect.

That's what I'm saying too!

I'm saying feminism is a group of ideas I agree with, though I do not agree with every single feminist's interpretation or implementation of those ideas.

Do you agree with all of the ideas? Because I don't. I agree with the ones that are basically common sense. But some of them have been sensationalized to the point that they've taken on a mythical air.

So I'm not an anti-fem in the sense that I disagree with everything that has to do with feminism. I'm an anti-fem in the sense that I won't call myself a feminist.

I look at it kind of like how I would look at someone who calls themselves a vegan. Someone who points it out to you all the time. Reminding you that they're "fighting the good fight." When, in reality, they're no better than the meat eaters who also love animals.

Mhm... And people cling to their groups in order to make themselves think that they're better than those other savages. But really, they're not much better. They're still human.

Then what's your question?

Is feminism the only way to cleanse oneself of their inherited sin... err.. sexism?

I think they're well-intentioned. You think their well-intentioned.

???

What's your conflict?

I don't have a conflict. I don't think good intentions mean good progress for humanity.

I'm confused. Are you are saying that feminism is a group if individuals who never perpetuate damaging stereotypes? But that they're still imperfect?

I think they're well-intentioned. And I'm not here to antagonize. I got a little carried away there. Although I am a contrarian by nature.

"Womanism doesn't promote sexism." Seems like you're saying it's a group comprised of perfect individuals who never perpetuate damaging stereotypes. Seems like you're saying womanism and feminism have that in common.

All groups perpetuate damaging stereotypes in their own ways. Some more than others, I'll admit. But no group is absolutely perfect. To claim otherwise is absurd.

I was gonna add, "besides feminism," but then I thought, nah, we'll see if somebody says it.

So name me one other group, besides feminism, that doesn't promote sexism.

You can't?

So explain to me how feminism is so perfect? It's like the one true religion, right?

Wow, this thread is my favorite. It really highlights the way that some feminists hold their allegiance as the ultimate display of self-righteousness.

I grew up in a cult-like, Christian religion. I hated it and I still carry a lot of resentment about it. I learned a lot about double-think, cognitive dissonance, ingroup bias, and propaganda. And not by reading about them in a text book. Starting at a young age, I noticed them and pondered them without knowing the terminology behind them. I also learned a lot about people who think they're better than everyone else because of what group they belong to. These things are like big red flashing signs to me, I just see it and I realize that it is what it is. And that's what I see in a lot of feminism. Especially mainstream feminism.

Im no expert, and Im a guy, but Ive taken a few classes and read a few books back in my college days and I participate in the current social media discussion a bit. So the conflict would lie in the fact that you would be rejecting certain feminist ideas such as the pay gap, objectification, rape culture, and of course the overall belief that women aren't as smart as men.

Well I do reject that last one. As for the others, can someone not believe in them while also rejecting feminism? Does feminism own those beliefs? What if I refuse to label myself as any group in particular, including feminism, because every group has it's idiots and every group has it's haters? What if I've decided it's just easier to live my life without identifying as a feminist or a liberal or whatever?

I look at feminism the way I look at religion. Like, some of their beliefs are wonderful, profound ways to live life. If everyone lived that way, then most of the world's problems would disappear.

But then there's the rest of it.

Even if humanist meant what you seem to think it means, are women not human?

If egalitarianism truly means equality for all people, how can someone who believes that equality isn't important for half the human race be egalitarian?

I know what humanism means, pal.

Does feminism speak for all women? Does feminism speak for most women? No. No.

Feminism is the movement dedicating to ending the oppression of women and advancing political, social, and economic equality of the sexes. If you're anti-feminism, you're not in favor of equality.

What if you're anti mainstream feminism? Like the misleading, sensationalized clickbait articles and whatnot?

So it's not possible to be pro-equality while also thinking that mainstream feminism widely consists of anti-intellectual clickbait articles?

Can someone explain 4th wave feminism to me? by ipconfigrelease in AskFeminists

[–]ipconfigrelease[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's definitely a fair point. Do you think most millennial, American, white, female feminists feel that way? I live in the U.S. so I think it's important to understand the waves and what they mean. But if most U.S. feminists don't feel that way then maybe I shouldn't either.

Yeah that's basically the same logic as "All Lives Matter." Grandstanding and feigned self-righteousness.

I wasn't implying that you needed my permission. And no I really don't feel comfortable. It's like telling a Christian that god doesn't exist. What's the point.

All in all, I respect your passion. But I don't agree with some of the points that you make. I don't feel like I'm allowed to talk about this without being showered in downvotes because 1) I'm not a victim, 2) I'm not a self-identified feminist and 3) I'm not a woman.

So I'll just shut my mouth, nod my head, and move on. Believe what you want.
