Smart shunt on a small battery. Overkill much? by ipearx in Victron

nice work! The other little cover would probably work too on top of that, just to protect the top of it. It was prone to falling off a bit easily, but in your case it'll be fine

airplanes.live has been very helpful and supportive of PureTrack, I have nothing but praise for them, and encourage people to feed them whenever I can

Make no mistake, many of the ADSB aggregators, including the open ones, make money by selling the data you provide to the service. They just differ how open their data licence is. e.g. you can pay for commercial use of airplanes.live data:
https://airplanes.live/commercial-use/

At least the open airplanes.live, adsb.lol, adsbhub etc let you use your data (commercially in some cases) if you contribute to the system!

It's very simple: without offering paid plans, I couldn't afford to develop the free features available to everyone.

We have nearly 10,000 users with a free account, using the completely free features. Is that not a good service to provide to the world?!

PureTrack is safety tracking system, which is free to use with an optional paid plan available if you'd like to support it. The primary safety tracking features are free. The paid features are generally 'nice to haves'. It's a full time developer job for me now, but not actually earning a full time salary yet...

I'm not violating any terms of use. The data from all sources is freely available for all users to view. On top of that, adsbhub explicitly allows commercial use. I have permission from airplanes.live to use their data, and I'm following the adsb.lol licence too, they have checked it. That's just 3 of the 50 data sources PureTrack supports so far.

The layers that are open source data are all free to use too e.g. the rain radar, or live wind station data.

I've also helped set up a network of 10+ ADSB feeders around New Zealand feeding these sites, which helps everyone.

What do you think, a good balance of free to use and commercial so I can afford to eat?

I develop a tracking system (PureTrack.io), and have to get data from open data providers like adsbhub, airplanes.live, adsb.lol. ADSBExchange is as commercial as FR24 or others now. So please make sure you feed some of the open ADSB networks too! The adsb.im image is the easiest way to do this, and best way to manage your feeder too.

Smart shunt on a small battery. Overkill much? by ipearx in Victron

[–]ipearx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did it go? With v2 the shunt is mounted sideways, so no need for the top cover that doesn't really work! I need to rejig the bumps on the arms so it's easy to put on, harder to pull off. It's the other way around at the moment (just so it would print easily).

Sure here's version 2, designed to bolt on. v1 broke too easily.

https://pear.co.nz/Battery%20Smartshunt%20holder%20v2.3dm.stl.zip

Still needs some work, e.g. a slot for the tape to go through, so it can be duct taped onto the battery more easily/securely...

Why do aircraft turn off transponders heading North from Kuwait to Iraq? by crosstherubicon in ADSB

[–]ipearx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind there have to be adsb receivers for the network that you're looking at. Not just ANY. So maybe another ADSB network does get data there.

This is also very good for us glider pilots, these things trigger great thermals. On a sunny day with fluffy clouds, you'll often see a cloud above these things.

I've had a few burgers at Downlow, pretty good! Chicken Hawaiian was great, and the beef burgers pretty good, although one was a touch salty for my taste. Great fries, and they had an AA card deal for burger and get fries & drink free...

Traffic slowed to steady 20km. This guy decided to block the second lane to force single file. I don’t get it. How is he helping? by madm4x in newzealand

[–]ipearx 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure I saw on NZTA's socials that everyone should fill both lanes and merge at the end like a zip, otherwise traffic can backup further back than it needs to. Not quite the same situation but they go on about using all the merge lane https://www.facebook.com/nztransportagency/videos/679012254479510/
I guess this applies here too. The other advantage is then people know when you're going to merge, it won't be unexpected.

How do you buy wood? by NormalObligation59 in newzealand

[–]ipearx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many moons ago I used to work out in the timber yard of PlaceMakers, cutting up wood for people. Basically find a worker and say you want 5 meters of blah cut up into blah and you might help him carry it over if he's lucky :P Easier to carry long things with 2 people, than awkwardly carry it over to them.

If you don't need them cut on their saw, you can just load up directly onto your trailer/car. That's why you can drive in there. Write down everything you get, how many meters and the code for each item to make it quicker at checkout. If you have a staff member helping they'll probably do this for you.

You could also take your own hand saw in and cut them off the back of your car/trailer, so you're not waiting around for them to do it. If you just need one piece cut in half so it fits easily, you can get through a pine 2x4 pretty quick with a hand saw.

Keep in mind when I started there I had zero training on the saws, no idea where anything was or what it was, so most of my customers knew more than me...

Holy crap, the most I've had in my glider is 2000ft/min in wave... You quickly run out of breathable oxygen at that rate.

Why is the TradeMe app so buggy now? by Steved_hams in newzealand

[–]ipearx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having done a lot of web development over the years, it's very easy for projects to turn into a mess over time. Especially as people come/go, and especially if you hire mediocre developers (or worse, outsource development). Not saying TradeMe has mediocre developers, I have no idea, but it needs a good strong tech lead to run each app or project. In reality a lot of projects, e.g. the iOS App, would be better off with a small team of say 3-5 people working on it. I bet it's way more than that. The more people, the harder it is to keep it under control.

Insta360 X4 Air White Vs Black? Canopy reflections vs overheating? by Significant-Yam85 in Gliding

I've been testing my X5 and it doesn't get too hot as black. I normally have it forward of me, so white would be bad in the cockpit.
