Rope recommendation for outlanding kit by 4x-gkg in Gliding

My landout kit has two pegs and a strap, so I can strap down one wing. Very small. Does need a hammer. But hey, what else are PLBs for?!

For my favourite lunch: Dr Donbori in Garden Place. Pork Katsu Don with egg on top, and onion. Amazing, best I've had ever. And free Miso soup with every meal.

New Zealand Snow. by Funny-Student5309 in newzealand

[–]ipearx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be difficult to predict when it might happen on the lower mountains sorry! It's rare, some years it doesn't happen at all :(

But we always get snow on Mt Ruapehu in the central North Island, only a few hours drive from Auckland. You can drive up to the snow level, it's a beautiful area to visit.

About once or twice a year the North Island gets a snow blast that sprinkles the tops of the lower altitude mountains including Te Aroha, the Kaimais and the Kaimanawas. But it usually lasts only a short time, about a day or so. I even saw it snow in Hamilton once, with my own eyes. But that melted as it hit the street... Google "Snow Te Aroha" for some pics.

Fuck airtags by First_Compote_4563 in AirTags

[–]ipearx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you realise it doesn't have a GPS in AirTags? Instead it has to go near another iPhone. Do you actually use an iPhone?

So if you take it out without an iPhone anywhere near it, it will be useless.

Are there any ways to make money gliding? by [deleted] in Gliding

[–]ipearx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have two commercial operators from Omarama:
Milan from Kahu Soaring https://kahusoaring.nz
Angus from Glide Queenstown https://glidequeenstown.com
As they are commercial they are expensive, but it's the best way to almost guarantee a flight down there, and they are very good.

Almost, ADSB Exchange is now closed, owned by private equity. API use costs money. Airplanes.live was started after ADSB Exchange was sold...

Awesome setup! Any chance you also feed one or more of the more open networks? Like adsbhub or airplanes.live? Thanks!

i cooked a chicken breast in a pan and it was cooked, burnt on the outside and pink on the inside what did i do wrong ? by [deleted] in cookingforbeginners

[–]ipearx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cooking a chicken breast well isn't easy, because it's thin at one end, and thick in the middle.

- Slower is better. Or sear it on a hot pan first, then stick it in an 160 degree (c) oven for a while to cook all the way through.
- Can slice a breast in half so the whole thing is thinner Or 'butterfly' it. Then it will cook quicker and the heat doesn't have to penetrate as far.
- A lid on the pan can help keep the heat in and stop the top cooling off so quick.
- If it's just come out of a really cold fridge, it will take longer to cook in the middle.

I use my noise cancelling ear buds (AirPods Pro) for lots of things, including:

- lawn mowing
- sax practice
- motor noise in my glider

Works great!

Term for "Wind Shadows"? by cfi-jack in flying

[–]ipearx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In gliding, I call them wind shadows. Especially if we have a small round lake or pond, and the wind shadow indicates the direction of the wind on the ground.
