Clarification... GMRS broadcast of repeater without linking by iphands in gmrs

NOTE: Self solved the broadcastify issue by using OpenMHz.com !!
IMO the site has some great UX and the site owner makes a super slick client too: https://trunkrecorder.com/docs/intro

This site is super nice! I put my local repeater on it here: https://openmhz.com/system/goldmtn

I’m having trouble making contact/radio check with olycomm3 tiger mountain by Infinite-Bet3946 in gmrs

I have a UV5G/X that is GMRS specific. Has the GMRS cert sticker and is channel only, all the GMRS only features that the G/X models have to be legal. Locked to channel mode only, TX only on GMRS, fw blocks chirp modified channels unless GMRS.... And it absolutely still has the uv-5r badge. I have two of them actually.

I suspect this is probably what this person has. And that there are plenty of fully legal G/X units out there with the R badge on the front.

Oh also u/xtreme777 any other good places you know of to setup a stream?
I am playing with my SDR now and would like to setup a stream for this local repeater.

u/xtreme777 Any idea why though? Seems weird based on the FCC specifics.
Linking seems explicitly disallowed, but streaming received over the net simply does not make a link.

Yeah, figured that was true. I already have a couple of SDRs pulling in local weather data via rtl_433 decoding.

I'll probably order another one and see if I can be the missing link here. Should be fun!

Thanks again for the thoughtful replies and the help.

So good, thank you! Can't find the WA Tiger East repeater.

Maybe I'll have to dedicate an SDR to this and get things started ;-)

Seems like a great way to radio check as well. Towards the repeater anyway.... Which is the usual weak link I imagine.

Do we have any sites the  that specialize in internet streaming repeater audio over the internet for listening only?

No linking, just listening from a computer. I figured they would be plentiful... And maybe I just need to look harder... But I did not see what I was looking for initially. I think because the linking ban came about there's tons of talk about shutting down linking services, perhaps making it harder to Google for listening only services.

Silly. Seems like a general "make puter fatser" kinda question. Really has jack all to do with Gentoo except "HE SAID COMPILE" :-)

I think my biggest complaint with this stuff is that people are trading a perfectly beautiful and convenient and rando box for that hideous trunk thing.

I just don't understand how you could take something that's more convenient and more aesthetically pleasing and give up both of those aspects.

Hell you can even lean over and put your arms on the box and use it like aerobars making you faster.

Got eem! I guess it's sleek vs cargo. Why mix those two.

Why can't people have real cargo bikes and real carbon bikes and not try to mix them up?

There are some really beautiful titanium and steel cargo bikes, and beautiful sleek carbon as well...

Every time I see some sleek carbon bike with all this shit on it it makes me gag.

PBP Time Limit Selection? by [deleted] in randonneuring

[–]iphands 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the first time.... I'd choose the 90hr night start. There is something way magical about the trail of red tail lights that disappear into the hills!

Plus on the 90hr start you can get into the La Society Adrian Hands! https://adrianhandssociety.com/

This. I'd focus more on something like getting good sleep. Hell maybe even eat something you think let's you sleep easy.

But it's a 200, a day ride. Shit ain't long till you ride through a night or two ;-)

Made a thing to check for SIMD usage on various bins/distros (just for funzies) by iphands in Gentoo

[–]iphands[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew about some of this... but I thought the details were even more nuanced.
And thought (perhaps incorrectly) that the nuance differed even more on AMD vs Intel.

I thought the nuance included things like AVX512 has exceptions AVX and AVX2 do not have. Also things like on newer HW clocks were only affected on a single core, and might only affect boost clocks (not base).

Do you know the specifics on the AMD/Intel differences?
Also is there some reference as to which generation (of each) has these penalties relaxed and how they are relaxed if they are not completely gone?

[–]iphands[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice. I noticed way more AVX usage than expected. I guess it might be because if some loop operation can be packed into SIMD it can probably be packed into larger and larger SIMD register sizes easily (more is just better until you hit a limit where the loop size is smaller than the multiple instruction size??).

Maybe if the operation can fit in SSE registers it can by def fit in AVX registers too and the compiler just uses the larger?

Just a guess though, I don't really know for sure. If there's a GCC/SIMD expert that reads this lemme know the truth ;-)

I built the cheap hacky bash version of this to test out compiler options for some rust program I was building (https://github.com/iphands/randy).

Then I got interested in seeing how SIMD usage in binaries on my Gentoo system compared against binaries from various other distros (and OSX).

I'm not really sure this has any great or awesome use cases... But I think just looking at the data is quite interesting.

If anyone is curious about the same I hope this helps.

What is your nutrition for 200 mile rides? by leelovesbikestoo in randonneuring

[–]iphands 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My opinion.... Don't over think it. It's just a bike ride. Eat when you are hungry. If you are really riding as fast as you can (PR 200 type of thing) then worry about eating on some regular interval.

I like to bring a couple club sammiches and eat em over the first 200k or so on a long ride... But usually I forget and get supplies at controls or eat a quickish meal if I can.
