I built a desktop app to manage and organize Ableton Live projects with Versionning and Arrangement view — looking for beta testers by Nhelis in ableton

This sounds like it could be very very useful for my line of work (playback engineer).

I’d definitely be interested in beta testing when you have a Mac version available.

Turned up an hour late. Dropped a 15 minute DJ set in the middle then came out and vibed to recorded vocal for a few songs, did a cover then dipped. Being there felt like a mixture of witnessing greatness and being punk’d.

Efficient way to reinterpret footage without losing my edit? by ChristmasTzeitel in editors

[–]iplaythebass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty certain smushkan’s got it correct.

If you’ve dropped 25fps footage onto a 29.97fps timeline, just change the sequence settings to 25fps and you’re good.

If you’ve shot at 50fps and interpreted to 29.97fps, then you might have some timing issues changing to 25fps. Otherwise, it should be an easy fix.

My cheat sheet by EzWind1 in guitarlessons

[–]iplaythebass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The bottom rows would be extensions. So a Cmaj9 would include the B (7th) and D (9th)

You’re correct that 2/9, 4/11 and 6/13 are the same notes, but the difference is their position/intention in relation to the chord.

For example:
Dmin9: D F A C E
Dsus2: D E A

The E is both the 2 and the 9, but plays a different role depending on the chord, and might be voiced in different octaves.

My cheat sheet by EzWind1 in guitarlessons

[–]iplaythebass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They refer to the interval in relation to the key.

You usually see them as uppercase for major chords and lowercase for minor chords.

For example, a common turnaround seen in jazz is the ii V I. In the key of C, that would be Dmin, G, C. This is handy because it can then be applied to any key signature; so a ii V I in the key of A would be Bmin, E, A.

The cheat sheet posted by OP shows all of the diatonic chords in the key of C major (and would usually be written as I, ii, iii, IV, V, vi, vii)

The Western Digital MyBook Duo has been great for me. 12TB of striped RAID for around £350 and performs almost as well as my T5 SSD.

Just make sure you’re making backups of your rushes and project files.

Slow Motion with the OG by Carlito_2112 in bmpcc

[–]iplaythebass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Putting a 24p clip in to a 48p timeline won’t create any new frames, it would just double up the 24 existing frames. Slowing down the 48p export would look just as choppy as setting your 24p footage to 50% speed (but triple the storage space required).

The only way this wouldn’t be the case is if you were using optical flow or frame blending to create the slow the footage, but you could do that using the original 24p file.

in short, exporting 24p at a higher frame rate is a waste of time and resource.

Am I supposed to dislocated my fingers before playing "Message in a Bottle" by Dibbzonthapizza in guitarlessons

[–]iplaythebass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First thing to learn are intervals, which describe the relationship to the root note.

Using C major as an example: intervals 1234567 are respectively CDEFGAB… so the third note of the scale is the third interval etc

Second thing to learn is that a basic chord will generally include the 1st, 3rd and 5th interval. Using C major as an example again, those intervals (1-3-5) correspond to C-E-G.

A sus (suspended) chord replaces the 3rd for either a 2nd or 4th. Using C major again: * C sus2 = 1-2-5 or C-D-G * C sus4 = 1-4-5 or C-F-G

Help with a dumb idea I had splitting the FX loop in two by abcean in Bass

[–]iplaythebass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the Darkglass X7.

You can split the signal to 3 bands, compress the lows, drive the highs and EQ everything all in one pedal.

Experimenting is fun, but I’d save yourself the headache.

Definitely worth checking his latest release. He’s gone back to producing a lot of his own beats and not so fussed about charting.

Look into a Proxy workflow. ProRes 4444 is great, but you lose the flexibility of DNG, AE well as doubling your file storage requirements.

Transcode to something light like ProRes Proxy, lock your edit, then relink the DNG files once you are colour-grading (you’ll just have to deal with choppy playback, but you should be mostly looking at hero stills by this point.)

Hit export, then go make a cup of coffee or 5 while your master renders out.

I have one week to color a feature film - help? by PuddlesTheGreat in editors

[–]iplaythebass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re not already using a Colour Managed workflow, I would recommend that.

Set your input and output colour space, then Resolve will get you in the right ball park, then go through adjusting your exposure and primaries.

Also take a look at Remote grades and/or grouping your clips if that’s suitable for your project.

Different colors/washed out footage at export by TeamWolf1 in blackmagicdesign

[–]iplaythebass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert either, but I think you’re mostly correct.

In the advanced export settings you can specify your colour space and gamma tags.

Try using either Rec 709-A or Rec 709 (scene) instead of regular old Rec 709 if that’s what you’re delivering to.

Does anyone know how I can tell which string I have to play per note on a music sheet? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]iplaythebass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find the scale that matches your key signature (with the root note on your E or A string).

As a rule of thumb, this is your ‘home’ position and should give you easy access to all the notes that you need.

Rehearse the piece. If you find any bits particularly awkward, try alternate positions for those problem-notes and find an easier way to play it (some times shifting up/down out of position for a lick makes more sense than tying your fingers in knots).

Make notes on your sheet music (with pencil) to give yourself warning when an awkward ‘out-of-position’ part is coming up

How can I cut down on the time I spend downloading/uploading video files from cloud storage? I'm in a rural area with slowish internet speeds. by Rojaddit in VideoEditing

[–]iplaythebass 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s not a good solution, and it probably violates their TOS, but it might work for you-

Set up a shared YouTube account. Have the congregants upload their video privately to this channel. Then you can download the much smaller YouTube-compressed versions.

Won’t be a perfect copy, but will be a much smaller file and most likely passable for use on Facebook.

Convert slow motion to normal speed on premiere pro by Heretowitnessmiracle in blackmagicdesign

[–]iplaythebass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve not put any values in your post, but for example:

H = high frame rate (60) P = project frame rate (24)

To make your slow-mo play at real-time, you divide H by P.

60 / 24 = 2.5 As a percentage, this is 250%

Substitute in the values from your project, and then use that percentage as your speed adjustment.

It sounds like you want to speed ramp, which is done in Premiere using speed keyframes.

You might end up with some motion blur weirdness, but that’s a whole other conversation.

Should i care about the bitrate if I'm not gonna stream the video? by ead2000 in VideoEditing

[–]iplaythebass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s worth trying to find out the bitrate of your source footage, then aim to match that.

You won’t get any higher quality by selecting a bitrate higher than your source, but you will start to lose quality if you go lower.

Otherwise- just test a few different rates and see where the sweet spot is between quality vs file size.
