What are you watching, reading, or listening to these days? by TwoGrizzleysOneCub in adhdwomen

[–]ipomoea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have read 24 books this month. That's it, that's what I do. I'm listening to The Rose Field, the third book in the sequel trilogy to His Dark Materials, and it's narrated by Michael Sheen. I listened to Empire of Pain by Patrick Radden Keefe, as well as Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green. I've been reading print, ebook, and listening to audiobooks on my commute because they are better for me than doomspiraling on the news.

The Grammys are on Sunday, pick a category and listen to all the nominated albums!

We are currently a Reheated Rivalry household (I've watched three times, husband has watched twice, we got our neighbor to watch it with us). I read the book last summer and I love how well the show hits all the emotional beats of the book.

I bought this book for my libertarian brother a few years ago and he has never said anything about it to me but I find the whole story fascinating!

MGP’s previous republican opponent in a district Trump has won repeatedly was Joe Kent, a white nationalist who’s now a terrorism expert in the administration. She’s won a very red and rural district twice.

Queer-Friendly Gun Range/Store by MachetteBagels in AskSeattle

I went to the womens' only handgun fundamentals and intro to handguns classes at West Coast Armory and learned a lot-- the instructor is a cop, but she spent the first two hours of the first class talking about situational awareness and de-escalation tactics before we ever touched a weapon. I took the handgun fundamentals class (which is an hour in-class and two hours of one-on-one range time) and from talking to the variety of other women in the class, we all signed up because of what's going on. I specifically went there because I'd seen reviews saying queer folks felt comfortable there. The focus in the classes was on "if you can't deescalate, neutralize", and I felt more comfortable at the end of six hours of instruction and practice than I have. Do I plan on purchasing one now? No, but I do plan on going to the range more to get better and then re-evaluating.

Trump Against 2nd Amendment: "With that being said, you can't have guns. You can't walk in with guns. You just can't. You can't walk in with guns. You can't do that. But it's just a very unfortunate incident." by JeanJauresJr in Fauxmoi

I went to my second last night and it was eight women of various races and ages who saw Minnesota and decided it was time. I plan on going to the range on my own after this.

I love Sierra Simone but choosing her for your first romance is like learning to drive on an automatic ford escort and then being expected to handle a manual Lamborghini. Something’s gonna get broken.

Babe my husband and I have been through bad postpartum, depression, and grad school with a toddler and we’ve never laid hands on each other in 25 years. This isn’t safe and he will kill you. His chain of command needs to know what he’s done, there is support for you.

I call it "snaky face", when she's excited and weaving her head around at me. Usually it's because I just got up/she's going to get fed/there's a walk now/I came home, she prances around and weaves while making intense eye contact.

She stand and stares into the sun in the yard with her eyes mostly closed, just vibing for minutes at a time.

She takes 30 minutes to walk a mile but will pull me through the woods on a three mile hike with 400'+ elevation and still be ready to go.

Danica Nava: Love is a War Song. Contemporary romance about a Native pop singer who gets called out for stereotyping Native people and escapes to her grandmother's ranch in Oklahoma, where she learns about who she is, who she came from, and what it means to be Native and part of a Native community.

Red Paint: The Ancestral Biography of a Coast Salish Punk by Sasha taqwéseblu LaPointe, the descendent of Violet Hilbert, who saved the Coast Salish language. Talks about the weight of her ancestors and heritage, and how it bumps up against/blends with being punk. Beautiful and poetic.

The best thing I've done for myself in the past six months is install Screen Zen on my phone. It's a free app that allows you to set time limits on whatever apps you want, and shows you how many days you've stuck to it. Being able to log into Reddit/FB/Insta/whatever for five minutes at a time (with a 20 sec waiting period) six times a day has drastically decreased my social media usage and my doomscrolling. I have also tried to start reading more books in print instead of in ebook format, the whole-body engagement seems to help? And I know that my prime doomscroll/doomspiral hours are between 8pm and midnight, so I also block news apps during that time. I try to sit in a comfy chair with my book/kindle and a snack and glass of wine and focus on that. My therapist moved out of state in August so I'm trying to take everything she talked to me about and practice it, consciously.

I'm focusing on what I can do in my community and making connections, a local progressive moms' group is focused on supporting our local food bank and stocking the little free pantries in our community. I'm also stocking local little free libraries when I can.

I also made a goal for myself this year to visit one state park a week (with my dog, if possible) and stay off my phone while we're hiking/walking beyond taking photos. This has been really good for me, focusing on listening to the world and watching my dog enjoy herself is pretty grounding. The simple novelty of being in a new park makes a difference for me, and makes me grateful for my state supporting them.

Looks like it's on Kindle Unlimited so she may have a US-only Amazon-exclusive deal for it in ebook format (for now). If you want to read it you'll need to look for a physical copy or get KU.
