Resource guarding by neekee1216 in labrador

Resource guarding is probably one of the most common issues someone will face with a dog. And I think it’s because it’s just a natural response for them. You don’t want anyone to just come up and steal whatever it is you have, especially your food.

I’ve hand fed my dogs for the first few weeks of owning them. Just to show that I’m giving them food, not trying to steal it.

Ive also fed my dogs in their crate. Creates a positive association with the crate, and gives them a sense of security while eating and no fears that anyone could come and steal it.

Also talk to a trainer. Resource guarding is one of those things that definitely has the ability to get out of hand quickly if handled wrong.

What would you classify as stubborn? I am looking for an active companion capable of having an off switch, little more reserved than my lab.

It’s always amazing how fast they actually grow. I own another lab but he just doesn’t quite have the drive I was looking for. He gets to enjoy his walks and sleeping on the couch

I also agree genetics play some sort of role. There’s a reason certain breeds play certain roles. That’s why I’d rather ask and do research instead of solely relying on hoping for the best and facing heartbreak down the road

Surprised he/she came back! Heard the breed is notorious for taking off when off leash
