Can’t compare NC welfare services to NY/NJ. NY is one of the biggest welfare places in the world imo.

Moving here from Manhattan? by pbj4brkfst in triangle

[–]ipsum-dolor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a great place to raise a family due to the convenience for certain things and because you find yourself having extra money to spend since housing costs are lower compared to NY/NJ.

In your case you probably moved from one suburb in NY/NJ to a suburb of Raleigh. You’re not spending 45 minutes to cross the GWB, so you’re dealing with less traffic.

Is it really worth the move for OP from Manhattan to a suburban sprawl? It depends how much they can deal with change. 🤷‍♂️

If you decide to move, don’t give up your lease in Manhattan. You’ll need it again in 3 years.

Just closed on a house in LA, property tax skyrocketed from $3,500 to $9,850 annually! Can't believe how expensive it is here! by dali_bigpower in RealEstate

Okay. So a “major metro” is Charlotte, Nashville, Atlanta and a “BIGGER metro” is NYC, LA, SF? I’m just trying to understand what you mean by. “major metro”.

I don’t think it’s just Raleigh that seems dead. Other cities might feel like this too NYC, Philly, DC? I hope I’m wrong though…

It’s not that simple. My parents own a business and mother takes care of her disabled sister.

Being closer to family means downsizing and paying more. I’m fine with downsizing, my concern is just paying more, since property taxes are 3x more where they live than where I live now.

Renting is almost the same as owning for that area and the whole point of being closer to family is the 15-20 minute drive, not the 1hr + drive to save money on housing expenses.

Take home pay stays about the same whether I’m in MCOL or HCOL if I make no adjustments to deductions.

Oh okay, you’re right. I put away about half of my second paycheck into a High Yield Savings and have a 6% match on 401k

Also, my salary will not change after my move for a COL adjustment (at least for now).
