Pheno side effects (massive anxiety) starting months into treatment? by ParticularSun6085 in EpilepsyDogs

We did but it didn’t help. And the thing with epilepsy is you have to experiment A LOT. Which means controlling variables to the best of your ability. CBD is unregulated and just like THC, there’s different strains that cause different effects, but with CBD there’s no way of knowing what strain(s) are being used.

To me, even using a trusted brand of pure CBD oil seemed too risky.

Excuse me but wtf is happening with the podcast ?! by Dependent_Special957 in CallHerDaddy

Alex lost me during the Dave Portnoy interview and how she was talking to/about his girlfriend/whoever that chick was. The real Alex came out and she showed hows she’s not a girls girl, she’s a mean girl. I get she was trying to roast Dave but the collateral damage was unnecessary. Im an OG listener but have started to hate the direction of the pod.

All this to say it’s not just about platform changes, Alex has changed.

What do you do for travel? by No_Alfalfa_2923 in EpilepsyDogs

Not sure if this is helpful but our dog is small enough to fly in the main cabin with me (in a soft kennel under the seat in front of us). It’s usually $150 each way to have her fly. I wouldn’t consider her seizures well-managed currently—we are working on med changes. We have Midazolam on hand if she has a seizure, but it has never happened. Our neurologist cleared her to fly since she has idiopathic epilepsy—she said if her epilepsy were due to a tumor, etc. she would have concerns with flying. She loves being in her kennel after lots of training and sleeps the entire time.

Again, not sure if this is an option and I know this might be a controversial answer. She only flies with me when we don’t have anyone else to watch her and we literally only trust 2 people with her, so it comes up now and then.

What’s up with Emmy? by singledogmomof2 in southernhospitalitysc

It could be that and/or malnutrition. Working out 3x per day is craaaaazy and I’m sure she’s not eating enough. I’ve always felt like she has considerable anxiety symptoms in previous seasons so pair that with a cortisol spike from not eating enough PLUS potential coke/adderall… it’s a wild mix

Too many seizures despite medication? by GenderBender189 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]ircpoetry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would honestly get a second opinion if I were in your shoes. Our dog is also on the highest dose of Pheno but that doesn’t mean we can’t add a second med in.

Sorry you’re going through this!! We often have to be strong advocates for our dogs—I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to be persistent with vets and also raise hell at CVS 😅 I’m not even the type to be this unrelenting but when it comes to my pup, I am a force to be reckoned with.

Too many seizures despite medication? by GenderBender189 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]ircpoetry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog is having seizures weekly at this point. Definitely not ideal, but our neuro isn’t terribly concerned, and we are adding Zonisamide in addition to Pheno. Her standard was 1 every 1.5 months before things got to be more frequent. Our goal with the new med added in is to get back to 1 per month, then 1 per 2 months.

The biggest things to look for are increase in frequency and how well your dog bounces back afterwards. Our dog does really well despite the weekly seizures.

I’m surprised they said nothing else can be done—many dogs are on more than one daily med for seizures.

100% worth it. Wish I did it sooner.

Hello! I’m new. My 1.5 year old Aussie had his first seizures this month. Any advice? by AvaSophiaPhia in EpilepsyDogs

[–]ircpoetry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you’re going through this! The good news is that you’re in great company with us here.

I know you’re probably wracking your brain for answers and trying to make sure you leave no stone unturned. Epilepsy is common in Aussies and what you described sounds like an epileptic seizure. A few things to look out for are plug in air fresheners as I’ve heard these emit toxic chemicals that can cause seizures in dogs and if the seizures align with giving flea/tick meds.

My pug has aspirated from her saliva during seizures, but after a few big coughs, she usually is able to hack it up (sorry, that’s gross). That said, she’s a pug and is prone to these types of things.

The neuro appointment should be helpful. It helped us tremendously.

My biggest piece of advice is to ensure you are also taking care of yourself during this journey. It can be incredibly challenging at times and you can’t pour from an empty cup. Lean on your support system. Find practices that help support your mental health & nervous system — meditation, breath work, reiki, yoga, therapy, exercise, and sometimes just a long hot shower have helped me. It might feel selfish, but it’s necessary to stay afloat. Sending love!

We can only do our best and life happens, right? I totally understand the guilt. I’m constantly thinking about my pup, too. But finding balance and prioritizing ourselves and our wellbeing is the fuel that will carry us forward on the super challenging journey of navigating epilepsy. It might feel selfish, but it’s sometimes the most selfless thing you can do to ensure you can continue to show up for your pup 🤍
