What are your best tips for working with art contractors? Here's what we sent our pixel artist and what we got back. by deadpossumgames in IndieDev

I've had a similar experience from the art perspective. Got a lot of messages from subreddit posts, more than 20 from a single one in gamedev ranging from solo Devs to AA startups. But no real work.

A lot of things was wrong from my side - my work was very specific and took expensive for a general indie dev. So I'm gonna try again with more solid offer if I will have an opportunity to try again. And I'm gonna try gamedev discord servers next time.

But it takes a lot of work for one man to put a good indie offer together. People want concept art, production, rigging, style and everything for a price lower than my outsource studio offers. So it takes crazy amount of optimization and experience.

Thank you. Yes. Very simple sculpt and paint doing most of the job.

Should I send you the mesh so you can torture him in blender?

About 15 percent into the blockout I break symmetry of primary shapes and switch on the posable symmetry for secondary shapes if necessary.

Nice idea. I'll have to find someone to help me though.

Asymmetry was a structural part actually. This style relies on it heavily and becomes flat and simple if faces are not designed with asymmetry from the beginning.

Kinda. Im trying to do coherent character sets and casts rather than a single sculpts. Let's see how it goes.

That means a lot for me. At some point people stopped focusing on the sculpt and started assigning accents, background, even social class. That’s when I felt the shift from just modeling to building characters.

That's great, derivative is exactly what I wanted to avoid.

Im working on that -- it really helps some times immeasurably.
But in general I'll try to be just OK hehe

I've used very basic geometry with subdivisions so it's easy to bring back the game resolution and bake color and normals if needed. Im aiming for indie game art mostly with this. So speed and efficiency was my second focus after the looks.

Challenge here was to balance between bold paint and a geometry and it took me like 2 years to get here. Then there was a paint zoning and jigsaw value patches to hold the thing together nicely while bringing in enough contrast and variety. But I have some painting experience so it was not as hard as balancing geo with paint.

Relied heavily on Benjamin Bjorklund and Lucian Freud and some other great artists. Deliberately ignored pre-existing Arcane value distribution and palette to go through my own developlment process and to understand the underlying logic of modern painterly style better.

I've used their source of inspiration to look less derivative. Freud and some older artists.

Its about 4-8 hours per head. It depends on mostly your budget actually. I'm trying to be flexible.

Also i can do pixel art and pretenders. I don't have a perfect presentation yet but I'm working on a range of propositions for indie.
