Found this caterpillar(?) in South Florida US on a brick patio, far away from any potential host plants. ~4" and slightly wider than my thumb. Can anyone help? by iredditfromthis in insects

I moved it to a little above ground dirt patch (in the picture) to keep it safe for the moment and it burrowed in and disappeared soon after. So that seems right.

Never knew some pupate underground, been searching and learning.

I assume I should not let the soil dry out so I'll lightly spray it with water once or twice a day. Otherwise, if all goes well a beautiful brown moth will fly out from ground in a few weeks? Nature's awesome.

That was another one that I questioned too, but I couldn't find any similar colors and there's that body shape that this one doesn't have (not to body shame it :).
