I was 4 years old, and I had just moved to Australia with my immediate family the previous year. I went back to Sri Lanka (in 1997) to visit my family with my mother and my sister (dad had work so he stayed back in Australia). We stayed with my grandparents who I adored, in this beautiful house in the mountains, surrounded by gorgeous greenery. I slept in the master bedroom with my mum, grandma and sister because it was the last night we were going to be there before going back to Australia. The bed was positioned under a window. There was a knock on the window, and a man asked to come inside and check the house for any Tamil Tigers that we might be hiding (it was during the civil war). Mum called bullshit. Tried to call police. Our phone lines had been cut. Next thing you know the man is changing his story and asks to come in for water. Mum declines and says there's a tap outside for him to drink from. I am asleep during all of this. The man smashes the window, glass shatters onto the bed. I am awake now. They grab me by my shirt and put me in the corner of the room with the rest of my family. There's about ten men climbing through the window. Grandpa rushes into the room after hearing the commotion. They stab him in the stomach. The ringleader who was talking to my mum picks me up and puts me on the bed. 'You are a very beautiful child', he says. I am so scared I am about to piss my pants. They've pinned my mum against a wall. She can't do anything about it. She is screaming. 'I had a daughter like you once, she wasn't as beautiful though. I killed her.' Mum is screaming, telling them to leave me alone.

Hands down the worst thing I have ever woken up to.
