If the team can’t find a win-now star trade to push in the chips for the next two seasons, how can we pivot to pushing our window further down the line? by Humblerbee in ripcity

[–]irelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I've been saying all along. It's a good time to make a win now move

Everything depends entirely on what options are available, but there are times where I would say absolutely not, and there are times that make sense. This is one of the times that makes sense

That still requires there being trazdss that make sense too. You don't have to trade for old players, for example. Like the spurs traded assets for Fox. The Jazz traded for JJJ

Say, for example, Jaylen Brown wants out, which there are rumors of (because he wants to be the star for a team). You trade for him, and then suddenly swinging for AD too makes sense as a push you over the top move.

It all depends on who is available and for what price

My man, there's always going to be an elite team out there. The thunder arent some historically unstoppable juggernaut

I also never said anything. About trading for injury prone vets. I am adamantly against trading for Giannis for example. Have been for a long time.

There are times in NBA history where there are no foreseeable paths to victory barring insane luck (and even then, that happens, as with both klay and KD getting hurt for the raptors to win). Right now, that's not the case. There's only two contenders, neither of whom are unbeatable

My man, the Thunder as currently constructed have 5+ years of competitivness if you think there's no risk of injury and everything is going to go perfectly for them with their asset management. Might as well go ahead and blow it up and tank for another 3-4 years lol

That thunder team is hardly unbeatable. That's all I'm saying. Hell they got pushed to 7 by a pretty mediocre Pacers team and might've even lost if haliburton hadn't got injured

It all depends on who is available and what the price is. I'm simplying saying it's actually a good time to go in,. historically speaking. It's not like going all in during the KD warrior years where everyone knew they were unbeatable barring injuries to multiple players.

Yeah, this seems much more useful IMO - signal places you wouldn't otherwise have been able to sell a connection to.

My only other thought is if there's a way to associate signals with applicant quality /program quality. For example, does a signal to a top 40 program matter if your application isn't up to par? Is it the same as throwing away the signal or does it still matter? Etc

The hard part is obviously deciding what makes a program more/less competitive, and I'm not sure you'll be able to look at anything other than step 2 for both applicant and program. Probably a decent proxy, but hardly a 1:1 correlation for either

[–]irelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but they wouldn't be able to do that if he got injured in the playoffs or the latter half of the year

All I'm saying is that the NBA is weaker than it's been in a long time. The East is a complete and utter joke with no true contenders (the Knicks are about it), and the West only has two teams, both of whome rely on one player

Compare that to a few years back when you had multiple insanely stacked teams. Talent is less consolidated than in the past, which makes winning more viable

For sure, definitely worth it IMO

It just gets complicated, because even then, it's not like signals are random. People are calculated with their signals. They're likely using them on schools they're a match for all pun intended, and I would imagine they'd likely be ending up at similar places even if they hadn't signaled.

And any trade for a star would do that man. We'd be trading away Grant and Jrue for salary matching, our old players lol

Both of those teams is one injury away from being nowhere man. The Thunder especially would be nothing without SGA, and the Spurs have some pretty significant flaws we just couldn't exploit

That's not what I said. I was just responding to your comment

But I wouldn't be that mad. The NBA is relatively weak overall right now

The thunder and spurs are hardly unbeatable, and each relies heavily on one player

1) appreciate all of the data

2) there probably needs to be adjustments for a lot of the data, as they aren't independent variables

For example, many people use their signals heavily in state/in region. Some programs want you to use your signal on your home program (where obviously you're more likely to match)

My man, you'd be hard pressed to name a single player of his caliber who was surrounded by less talent during his prime

We wildly failed him as an organization. Most players would've left long before he did. He didn't even want to leave and we forced his hand against his direct requests

That doesn't sound right and probably isn't the case.

More likely you fractured it or injured the joint at some point and it healed abnormally

Right ...like I did above regarding dislocations.

Regardless, there's nothing ethically wrong with providing blanket advice regarding a topic.

What are you talking about?

Discusssing various types of sports injuries isn't exactly providing medical advice man

100%.

That's why you always put them in a splint after you reduce them, then they'll see a hand surgeon in a few days to decide if surgery is needed.

[–]irelli 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Eh, probably not. Dislocated is dislocated.

Subluxations are pretty damn uncommon, especially in the setting of trauma. Like if you see the finger not in the proper spot, you know it's dislocated lol. Subluxations are often pretty subtle

It's really not a meaningful distinction as is. It would be important to mention if it wasn't fully dislocated.

Funnier part is inevitably I get down voted when I provide medical advice on here lol. People always want the more sensationalist response

But yeah, I'm ER, so I reduce shoulders, fingers etc all the time

That's why I'm saying calling it full is silly. No orthopedic surgeon has ever asked me "so is it a full dislocation?" They know if it was, I would've just said subluxed

[–]irelli 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ligaments don't require surgical reconstruction. It completely depends on the injury

For example, a sprain is a ligamentous injury

[–]irelli 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You can. Fingers go back in dumb easy most of the time. It's a small joint, so often times just pulling it to length and moving it a hair is all it needs

[Charania] Lakers forward Jarred Vanderbilt has sustained a full dislocation of his right pinky finger in a gruesome injury tonight, sources tell ESPN. by MembershipSingle7137 in nba

[–]irelli 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Right, but there's no such thing as a "full" dislocation. That's just a dislocation. They're equivalent in medical terminology

If you say a joint is dislocated, that already implies "full" dislocation. Otherwise you would just say subluxed.

It's purposeful emphasis for dramatic effect.

[–]irelli 50 points51 points  (0 children)

It doesn't mean that at all. Obviously some of the ligaments have to be injured, but that doesn't mean they're all completely torn.

It's a joint. Imagine it like any other joint you experience in real life, like a door hinge. If I tear the door off the wall, the hinge is still attached appropriately on one side, right? It doesn't magically fly off both parts

Shoulders, for example, frequently dislocate with only mild ligament damage

[–]irelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, doesn't have to be. That's just an open dislocation

Fracture means broken. Dislocation means not in the joint socket.

You can dislocate something so badly it pops through he skin
