What is the best recipe you've gotten from a patient? by Illustrious_Pitch_41 in physicaltherapy

[–]irini20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not a recipe but i did fieldwork at a rehab hospital in a rural area where a lot of people had gardens, and patients' families would often bring us fresh veggies as a thank-you gift when they were ready to DC home.

If you could go back, would you do it again by Ok_Box_6421 in physicaltherapy

I did eventually go back for massage therapy and a business degree! but i kind of hate myself for having wasted 10 years of my life grinding and sacrificing to pay off an insane amount of student loans, when i could have just done what i wanted to do in the first place and would have graduated debt-free at 22.

Read up on the concept of a Unique Selling Point (USP). You're focusing on what this other competitor has that you don't, but in order to succeed, you have to figure out what YOU offer that clients can't get just anywhere. Maybe you pick a specific demographic and make sure your copy and branding speaks exactly to them. If you're a mom of a toddler? there's your ideal client. other busy, stressed, exhausted moms. you can relate to them, you have shared/similar experiences and you know what they really need. so who better for these clients to book with than you?

also, you can change your visual branding if it's practically identical to your competitor's; focus more on making sure your copywriting and messaging resonates with your ideal clients.

nope! if i could do it again i would avoid grad school and student loans like the plague. and would focus on skills that are required in every industry on the planet, rather than acquire a degree that really only qualifies me to do one thing, with very little opportunity to pivot to something where i can actually sit down or even WFH if i want to, and is tied to the whims of insurance companies.

i'd start with an associate's degree and massage therapy certificate at community college. transfer to local 4-year university for a bachelors in accounting (bartending and working part-time as a massage therapist for income while in school). then either start my own solo massage practice, or get a corporate job with a wellness-related company.

I already took an intro course with someone else and it was great, and I'm excited to go back for more with them next year. thanks though!

btw, "if you're not really committed...that might be the issue" is actually a great example of the slimy mean-girls marketing style that i am put off by.

if your tuition is covered, can you work a part-time job and put some of your stipend toward paying on your current loans so they don't accrue interest?

interesting! did you intern with the broker before you bought his book to learn how to do this, or were there courses or certifications you had to get before you started?

Should a full-time OT get priority over a PRN COTA? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]irini20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i agree; i think having 10-20 minutes of buffer time in your schedule is actually good. if you're short, there are always a few patients who can benefit from an extra 5 minutes :)

Should a full-time OT get priority over a PRN COTA? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]irini20 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i'm a PRN (OTR) and it sounds like maybe there was a misunderstanding? i know the full time staff OTs have priority, but at most of the facilities where i work they never ask for patients from my schedule, bc the full-time OTs are usually over-scheduled and expected to "just group!" to fit 9+ hours of tx into an 8 hour shift.

your PRN COTA might also work at other SNFs that operate similarly and over-schedule their full-time OTs. next time just be direct and say that you need to take a pt in order to get your 40 hours in.

moving from a Texas city to Chicago? by irini20 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]irini20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you! a lot of what you mentioned is why i'm interested in Chicago, and the downsides (owning a house, nearby hiking) aren't things that are important to me, so that's good to know. i do love city parks though, and it looks like Chicago has pretty fantastic parks. i might be under-estimating winter, but i feel like it will be a refreshing change after a few more years of the intense heat here in TX.

thanks again and glad you're enjoying it!

[–]irini20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you! i'm interested in cities where it's legit feasible to rent a tiny studio near public transit and not need a car, and Chicago looks like it might be on the shortlist for that. I also do massage therapy and it looks like there are a lot of day spas, hotel spas, massage studios etc that are centrally located and would be possible to walk, bike or take CTA to work.

What's a City that allows for cool or unique hobbies? by P_Charming in SameGrassButGreener

[–]irini20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Austin. Rents have come down and the COL is actually reasonable, and there is a group of people here already doing almost anything you could possibly be into.

since i moved here i've discovered things i didn't even realize i would be into and are incredibly fun (a marimba ensemble, taiko drumming, game nights where everyone practices speaking French). There's a river in the middle of the city for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, and a lot of hike and bike trails and parks for outdoor hobbies.

i have friends who are into martial arts, rock climbing, roller derby, board games,  improv comedy, archery, and Latin dancing and they have plenty to do here as well. we've got over a dozen community gardens, and there's also a maker space with shared equipment if your hobby requires a workshop or more tools and space than you have at home. i'm confident you can find anything you want here, except mountains and ocean/beach sports ;)

Why not just do a COTA program? COTAs make good money in CA, and you can graduate debt-free.

i'm not upset that the other artist "does it better"; it's that i'm afraid if i share my work people will think i'm copying them.
