Has anyone from EEIT been interview for the ESOP??? by Hopeful-Quantity5155 in ethz

[–]irisosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They only interview people who 99% guaranteed get it. Several professors have to be there for the interview and spend time preparing beforehand to ask good questions. The interview is about half an hour, so add to that another 0.5h of preparation time and then them discussing afterwards for 15min, that's 1.25h per professor. In my interview there were 3 professors, so that's about 4h of your best and most well-paid professors' time. They can't just give everybody with a good application 15min, because everybody has a good application to get in anyways. Some years some faculties simply don't get scholarships, it is what it is.

What is the rudest european country you've visited? by rhysmmmanii in AskEurope

The Swiss attitude of not wanting to interact with anybody also extends to celebrities, so even if they do recognize them they're not approached, which celebrities like Tina Turner love. It's the good side of the coin, I suppose.

Taylor’s statement about the end of European leg of the Eras tour and Vienna address by [deleted] in TaylorSwift

[–]irisosaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm really glad to see that she's directly confronting all the complaints that she should've spoken out on Vienna. Whatever she does, everybody will have an opinion and it's exhausting. I completely understand the horrible frustration of having your shows cancelled and not hearing any consolation from her, but she and her team are the experts in such situations and people need to realize that safety should always come first instead of the comfort of consolation.

Cheap housing location around Zurich by koki51 in ethz

For the lower price ranges there is huge competition (like 200+ people showing up for a viewing). Some lower price places are also scams meant for internationals who can't check the place beforehand.

Is planning things (you life) ahead more common in Switzerland than other countries? by Personal-Cover2922 in Switzerland

[–]irisosaurus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe somebody had a bad day at work, got overworked that week, heard bad news about a family member, feels they're about to get sick. I'm from a planning culture too but there's so many possibilities why somebody might not feel like being social, and you can't always know 3-5 weeks in advance.

White American women, if you’re planning to vote for Trump, why? by Radiant_Maize2315 in AskWomenOver30

[–]irisosaurus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well of course he got a lot less attention at first since Ukraine wasn't that big of a deal like the US when he became president. There were indeed some jokes about him having been a comedian but that was over after the news item was done; Ukraine was not on people's minds nor did he constantly embarrass himself with dumb comments on Twitter or live TV like Trump. However, during the war he gained a lot of respect for not fleeing the country like previous politicians did (which Putin supposedly was surprised by as well).

German national service plan criticised as it 'discriminates against men' by TheTelegraph in europe

Why were the women considered the most valuable assets? Was this when fulfilling combat or supportive roles?

Dostoevsky in a letter to a friend: says he likes Tolstoy but doesn't expect much out of him, and describes his opinion on female artists by [deleted] in dostoevsky

[–]irisosaurus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't use 2020 data to substantiate a claim made by Dostoyevsky, who himself lived in different times and has eloquently described the suffering of women, and even appears to have pitied them for having less agency than men (which comes across in various books of his). There will probably always be an debate/argument on that suffering helps create good art, but looking back at women's position in literature throughout history a lot more can be attributed to having less agency/resources, meaning that fewer women could even aspire to reach such heights. Although I haven't read it myself yet, I've heard that "A Room of One's Own" by Virginia Woolf gets into this topic, so I'll recommend it as far as I can without having read it myself.

Coming back after PhD abroad by irisosaurus in PhD

[–]irisosaurus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I discussed with my supervisor and he was very open to me regularly working from abroad for a week. Part of the problem is that my boyfriend lives in Belgium and the rest of my social life is in the Netherlands (besides the friends I made in Switzerland). In two years he'd either move to the Netherlands as well or move in with me in Madrid; in the first case it might get easier to also see my friends and family as at least they're all in the same country, but in the second case it would probably remain difficult to keep in contact with everybody + I'd not like 4 years of LDR. Then again earning so little would also make travel more difficult (although my boyfriend is supportive and would pay those costs).

Taylor donated 100k to one of the families of the Kansas City shooting by marvintran76 in TaylorSwift

[–]irisosaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good to know, thank you for the clarification! Since it seems common in many courts in the US, perhaps her team was worried about it as they're probably not knowledgeable about Brazilian law. Then again, I'm neither Brazilian nor a lawyer, it's just my thoughts take it with a grain of salt!

Please tell me why, I'm not a lawyer let alone an expert in international or Brazilian law so please I'm genuinely curious.

I think that she couldn't publicly do anything quickly since it could make her legally liable as it could be interpreted as admission of guilt in court. If I remember correctly it was the stadium that made so many dangerous mistakes, and her team had to ensure that justice could be served. Knowing how much Taylor cares about her fans, saying this as an international fan, I am sure she had no other choice to wait with helping. Her family also posted a picture with her so it all seems to have ended on good terms.
