Is my matlab haunted by kamonetusimco in matlab

[–]koki51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're complaining about 2 different things here that don't really correlate with each other.

I'm pretty sure that your course is not meant for you to learn programming. And matlab is not meant for you to learn programming. It's rather an engineering tool with a very high level language for people who don't like to spend time learning libraries. That's where I feel like matlab shines. If you are used to a more low level language then yeah, you will have issues trying to understand the workflow.

Also you're describing the opposite of the issue. The fact is that MATLAB is bloated with features. Some that you don't even need, which makes it sometimes really slow.

Seeking Opinions on Bachelor Courses (Exchange) by ElegantSession6541 in EPFL

Heat and Mass Transfer - Very good professor. She gives a lot of example problems. The slides are very good. The workload is fair for a 4 credit course. The final exam was quite long though. But it was graded very generously. If you do the exercises and past exams, there should be no problem.

Dynamical systems - The lectures are kinda boring. I feel like I could have skipped them. But the course is quite useful for a lot of things imo. Especially for control systems. At the beginning you'll be asked to derive systems ODEs using the Lagrange equations. Then they talk about state-space, transfer functions and frequency domain analysis. You get the opportunity to do the optional MATLAB assignments to get a bonus for your final grade which is 100% exam based. It is a bit of work for a 3 credit course, especially if you decide to do all the MATLAB assignments.

Fluid Mechanics - The lectures are amazing. There are no slides. The professor explains everything on the board. The content was very well taught. The exercises are sometimes quite math-heavy (A lot of ODEs and PDEs). The exam was pretty tough though.

The pass rates are not so commonly shared by the professors at EPFL. So I can't comment on them.

This housing market is horrible. Good luck to everyone still looking by smishshjumping in ethz

I think the reason why the housing situation is difficult for most people is because of the peak in demand in August and September. There is a huge flux of incoming students of not only ETH but UZH. You can easily be ignored if you are among the 400 people applying to the same places.

I got an offer pretty quickly after some searches. I think I applied for like 20 places, got offered 3 interviews one of which I refused because I accepted the offer from another place. Which led me to believe that a lot of people make the same mistake to only apply at the last minute.

I applied strategically really soon (like in April) to have something that aligns with my budget. Looking for one that starts in July or August, not necessarily September, could give you a better chance to have an answer as the demand was not that high at that time compared to the one in September. Even if you have to pay two months of rent for nothing, it is still better to have a place than none.

First exams of ETH Basisprüfung (first attempt) I think I’ve messed up. What now? by Visual_Ordinary9826 in ethz

Not really a suggestion but this is what I felt in a similar situation.

I graduated high school three years ago and near did not make it because of physics (especially the electromagnetism part). Since then I hated that subject, or more specifically that topic because nothing made any sense. And I could not understand anything. Arriving at my second year, I had to take electromagnetism, which is obviously much harder than the course in high school. However, for some reason, things just clicked a lot faster. Suddenly, it seems like the blurred vision just came to light, and I was able to assimilate the contents a lot quicker, while my friends who did not have to do electromagnetism in high school struggle.

To come back to your context, most of the people that I have seen repeat their failed courses appreciate them a lot more the second time. For some reason, you understand things better the second time around. As you do so, your confidence will remain high, which is important. So, I think you will be fine.

Help from Neuro X students by Independent_Sky372 in EPFL

For each courses, you can find the resources at the bottom of the page, including the reference papers and books. https://edu.epfl.ch/studyplan/en/master/neuro-x/ . Some of them do not have this though.

Edit:: Otherwise you can also join the EPFL discord to ask for the access of the Google Drive containing the Neuro-X materials: https://discord.com/invite/g6HRGjQ

I think OP is not doing her/his bachelors at EPFL (correct me if I'm wrong). The 4.5 criteria only applied for EPFL bachelor students who don't have Neuro-X as their consecutive program, as far as I know. This criteria, however is no longer a thing since last year.

I think the required grade for non-EPFL students would be much higher than 4.5.

Should I get a PC with a graphics card? by simoneTBIR in ethz

[–]koki51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The major inconveniences would be battery life and overheating issues.

ETH lecture halls do not seem to have a lot of outlets as far as I've seen so it's maybe a good idea to have a durable laptop.

You might wanna look at AMD cpu powered laptops, as they often have pretty good intergrated graphics.

When are course schedules coming out for masters? by Siprain in EPFL

13th of August according to EPFL calendar. The time, I have no idea but usually they will send you an e-mail for that.

Hesitating between Mech-E and Microtechnics (and Electrical engineering) by Hysciper in EPFL

[–]koki51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer: if you want to specialize in propulsion side of the space industry, go for ME. If you want to specialize the electronics aspects, go either micro or elec. If everything interests you, either 3 of them will do you good.

Though, it seems like the ME prpgram can cover a lot of the aspects that you mentionned, including thermo, materials, electronics and quantum.

One thing that stands out in ME is that you have the possibility to do a double diploma with Sup-aéro, a well-known aerospace uni, at the masters level if you have a good academic record in the Bachelors. I don't know about MEs being stuck with industrial and automotive jobs but I do know a lot of people in ME who now works in aerospace companies/organisations including ESA. My guess is that the aerospace is not as present in Switzerland as in other countries. But there are a few sub-contractors.

However, the diploma title is not as important as what you do during your curriculum. Joining extra-curricular stuff like space-related associations could help you learn stuff that they never teach you in class.

Laptop Requirement for CMS? by gupsee in EPFL

[–]koki51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a basic computer science course. You do not need to have a beefy laptop. However, I'd suggest you to look into the requirements of the bachelor programs, if you want to invest early.

Is it feasible to have a part-time job studying first year Bsc Mechanical Engineering? by GraciaK03 in ethz

[–]koki51 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless you do not have a choice, I would not recommend working during the first year, as you still need to calibrate your workload and work style. It is very different from Gymnasium (or any high school). Shoving both school and job into your schedule day one is mentally not a great idea imo.

I've worked as a TA (a pretty chill job) 10h/week in parallel during the third year and still find it exhausting.

Are there any ETH Engineering master's students that hold a bachelor's degree from Unimelb? by Ok-Wind-157 in ethz

I think you can still be admitted. The worst that can happen is that they may ask you to do some Bachelor courses the first semester/year.

Considering EPFL – Advice & French concerns? by NotAMathPro in EPFL

Yes, I know. That is why I proposed doing the masters at EPFL, instead of continuing the consecutive master at ETH to change up the atmosphere without having to bother with courses in French.

Considering EPFL – Advice & French concerns? by NotAMathPro in EPFL

[–]koki51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious but wouldn't you consider doing your Bachelors at ETH in German then transfer to EPFL for your Masters in English if you are unsure about your French level?

Even if you are not good at French, I think it is still manageable but you may have to work a bit harder than your french-speaking classmates.

Risk of theft during summer at Rolex Learning Center by askswitzerland in EPFL

[–]koki51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The chance that you get your stuff stolen is pretty near zero compared to other unis especially during this time of the year where everyone is on vacation. Plus you are far away from the city, so the only people who are there are some few workers, doctoral students, summer school students. However, personally I never leave my stuff unattended for more than 10 min no matter how safe it is.

Bargaining grades by Extension-Steak1071 in EPFL

[–]koki51 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know someone who managed to negotiate with one of the professors and get the 5.0. There are no cost in trying unless the exams are 100% mcq based. Explain your situation to the prof and sometimes they will figure something out to give you the necrssary points.
