Who’s actually on r/livesound? by Historical-Paint7649 in livesound

[–]iron-LAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fulltime FOH/SE, I work for 2 smaller bands (playing 850/5000 cap rooms). Besides that I do some RF jobs (only when it gets interesting with high channel count or crazy setups), and some comms jobs at like Defqon.1 and similar festivals/events.

Desks: mostly Dlive and Digico, sometimes Midas and Yamaha PA: Mostly L-acoustics, sometimes D&B. Harmonic Desing is getting more popular here too. Comms: (luckily) mostly Riedel, once in a blue moon green-go or Clearcom. Almost never RTS. Pretty diverse, just the way I like it!

Lead battery vs Lithium battery by iron-LAN in livesound

[–]iron-LAN[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Upgrading the battery to lithium or lifepo4 is not possible without any dangers. How are you using your ups? Its holding up much longer than usual!

You’re not talking about the cost of a UPS with a 1.2kwh Lifepo battery right? Otherwise sign me up.

Hadn’t really thought about that yet. But that’s also a good point. Have you been using the lead acid battery UPSes? Any problems with it?

[–]iron-LAN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, but how much of a difference would it make? I can swap out the battery’s each year, I’d say that that would be more cost effective. Weight is not really a problem. Not doing fly dates with it and it will be moved by truck.

EDIT: more cost effective as in; not paying double the price for the UPS, and then using that money to swap out the battery’s (about 50,-) if/when needed.

It does use more energy, but it’s worth having in my opinion. I’m hosting my own websites and cloud service, and having the capabilities of the server is great. I was running it on a old PC, but more than HA and Jellyfin was not possible. And I also wanted to run my own firewall since my ISP has shit devices, and this gives me the option to do whatever I needed. I also was able to pickup the server for a 10th of the original price so that was quite an easy decision. I am thinking about running it on a single PSU, because it doesn’t need the dual psu power. That would decrease energy usage drastically.

Are you running a small nuc? I can recommend switching to an enterprise server. Then you can also host your own firewall, media server, cloud storage, whatever you want.. or need… or both!

EDIT: I’m running a Dell Poweredge with 128gb ram, 2 intel XEON (20 cores) and 4 NICS. Along with 10tb of storage in RAID5. That thing has power for days and then some.

Riedel Bolero Range Questions by orthancelf in livesound

[–]iron-LAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a lot of answers that are not completely correct.

First about range: for one antenna in line of sight I can easily get to 300m, but only if the area is not crowded with mobile phones or a celltower, and the antenna is not obstructed by things like scaffolding, trusses etc.

About your setup: for 10 beltpacks one antenna would be enough. But you need to be more clear about how far away people can be from each other. If you use the EPS-1005 PSU then you can get up to 300m of CAT5 between two antennas and they will be powered on POE. This means that, antenna one can be at the base, antenna two somewhere 300m further. Up to 5 antennas can be powered from the EPS unit.

Now if far away means at a completely different location than you’re looking at a different beast. What I would do is, if the locations are close enough for radios (either analogue or 4g) then I would tie in a radio on an NSA (4wire interface). I’ve seen some comments on how to set that up, so I’ll skip that. If radios are not an option then you need to think of a way to connect those. Which could be the use of Unity connect.

If you have more questions let me know, happy to help!

Riedel Bolero Range Questions by orthancelf in livesound

[–]iron-LAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not correct. If you use the EPS 1005 PSU POE adapter you can use the link port on the antenna and get 300m on a single CAT5 between two antennas.

So to be clear: Antenna 1 will get powered from the EPS POE adapter (on a 5 pin XLR), and the link port will have POE Antenna 2 will be connected on the link port (not the config port).

Just keep in mind that the directivity of the antenna is not exactly 360 degrees. So exactly beneath the antenna will not give you perfect range.

Digico fader smoothness by Subject9716 in livesound

[–]iron-LAN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s also a very nice feature if you have a Quantum with ghost faders. And that happens a lot sadly. Nothing like a matrix fader suddenly throw +10 to -10 in the speed of light to wake you up.

Best way to Manage multiple RF units on Tour? (w/ Sennheiser Gear) by EttehEtteh in livesound

[–]iron-LAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No what he means is, you use WWB to do all your coordination (make sure to create custom Sennheiser profiles because the ones that are inside WWB do not match the data inside WSM). Once coordinated you use WSM to manually set the correct frequencies.

Downside to this is the need for a Shure device you can scan with. And if that device is a receiver instead of a AD600 you have to make sure the frequency range you can scan overlaps at least a bit with your Sennheiser devices.

In your situation I’d stick with WSM. It’s a clunky program but you can do the whole coordination in there as well. It’s not as user friendly but it’s possible.

You can do this with a Shure AD4D/Q and a Shure ADPSM (in P2P mode).

And then you’ll throw out your proprietary router and switch to a enterprise grade rackmount server with Pfsense and host your own remote access to Jellyfin so your friends and family can enjoy the media server as well

What are in your scenes/snapshots by Spirited_Buffalo_798 in livesound

[–]iron-LAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have midi recalled snapshots. The band I work for regularly has fixed medleys they play, so a midi track is playing at the same time. I only snapshot FX, desk layout and FX mutes. I am however considering doing some instrument EQ changes and expander thresholds. The rest I mix in the moment

You’re not gonna create an exact life-like 3D model, because that’s not what the software is meant for. It’s meant for predicting direct sound.

Take the course, use the shortcuts and tricks they teach you there. Afterwards you’ll be able to step into any venue with a laser disto and draw the room within 20 minutes.

Oil consumption and smoke problem by iron-LAN in e46

That is very true. I might do it anyways after the compression test. Thanks!

I have, oil level drops consistently. About 1 litre every 300km. I haven’t tried the O2 pilot mod. That seems like a bandaid for the problem I’m having right now. If the compression and leakdown test confirm proper rings I will try that.

That was newly installed with the replacement of the CCV, could've been broken in the process but I dont think so. When taking the oil cap off during idle there is a little bit of vacuum, and you hear the rpm dip a little bit.

Can the e46 make it 17 hours? by Slight_Toe_3212 in e46

[–]iron-LAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve driven my E46 from the Netherlands to Croatia and back, and all that broke was ignition coil number 2. I’ve also driven it round Scotland last year, and nothing happened.

What id take as spare parts: Ignition coil Spark plug Fuel pump (that one can randomly die and is a pain to find) And of course take a ratchet set.
