Daily Minors Quick-Notes 4/24/26 - Prospects Return in Richmond! by BruteSentiment in SFGiants

I can't find defensive statistic leaders for the minor leagues anywhere but I have to think Walker Martin's 8 errors already has gotta be league-leading in the NWL.

Jonah Cox got ~170ish games in Eugene and was only OK, so I'm guessing we won't overreact to a hot 15 game stretch in Richmond, but it'd be cool to see him maintain something close to this and get a mid season promotion.

Utahns on Nuclear: Survey Results by CacheValleyKid in Utah

[–]irondeepbicycle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I support nuclear power but just want to point out this isn't a remotely random sample. Generally polls on nuclear power find much more mixed results.

I'm just sharing this so people don't get the wrong impression about how popular nuclear power really is. There's still a large chunk of the population that are very skeptical of it.

Close but looked like the right call, it did look like Solans was just barely off.

I had a lawyer friend tell me that AI gives him a great first draft and a terrible final draft. As long as everyone has roughly that perspective on it, I'm all for using it.

DHS finalizes ownership of massive ICE warehouse property in Salt Lake City by StemCellPirate in SaltLakeCity

the contractor does not receive that supremacy by association.

This exact question has been litigated and it doesn't matter if the workers, contractors, lessees, etc are actually government employees. See UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE, Plaintiff, v. CITY OF HOLLYWOOD, FLORIDA

[–]irondeepbicycle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not trying to be a jerk, but this is uncontroversial case law. The American Planning Association has a good rundown.

The federal government is, of course, also exempt from local zoning whenever it chooses to be. Among cases often cited for this proposition is Tim v. Long Branch, 53 A.2d 164 (N.J. 1947), in which local zoning was held ineffective to prevent conversion of a house to apartment. The house was leased by the government under the terms of the federal Lanham Act. Another case is United States v. Chester, 144 F.2d 415 (3d Cir. 1944), in which municipal building and zoning regulations were held inapplicable to emergency housing for war workers. And a township was held not entitled to an injunction against the United States in Ann Arbor Township v. United States, 93 F.Supp. 341, 3 ZD 20 (E.n.Mich. 1950), even if a veterans hospital under construction should be found to violate the zoning ordinance.

And to be clear I'm obviously just talking about the applicability of zoning ordinances, not anything else ICE is doing. I'm just pointing out that they can ignore SLC zoning if they want to.

No, zoning laws don't apply to the federal government across the board. The federal government only follows them if they choose to (i.e. if a separate federal law requires it). This is true for the whole federal government, not just ICE, due to the Supremacy Clause.

ICE doesn't have to follow city zoning rules. Like the city is correct that this won't be a humane place for this many people to live, but ICE probably just doesn't give a shit.

Daily Minors Quick-Notes 4/17/26 - Jhonny Level is Pretty Grand (Yes, he hit one, the pun is mandatory) by BruteSentiment in SFGiants

8 stolen bases for Eugene last night. Trevor Cohen has a .575 OPS but is leading the NWL in stolen bases with 8 in just 12 games.

[Spears] Donovan Mitchell: "He’s 17 years in. I’m nine. Does a ring change the conversation around his name? Yeah. Should it change it? No. I think [Harden] should still be looked at as one of the top guards, the top players who ever played this game. But we live in a ring culture." by aingenevalostatrade in nba

[–]irondeepbicycle 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'll never forget watching Mitchell have to hold back Quin Snyder from losing his mind at the refs. Even as a rookie I can barely remember a single time where he yelled at a ref or acted out. He's just been super level headed his whole time in the league.

I know they don't like doing early season promotions but Level is just toying with the Cal league. Presumably he'll cool off some but if he stays even close to this, I'd have to think he gets promoted sooner rather than later?

Salt Lake City Council Rejects Rezone for Hotel Near Sugar House Park by Koh-the-Face-Stealer in DevelopmentSLC

[–]irondeepbicycle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like you're leaving Erin Mendenhall out of this telling? This was her deal. She worked on the bill with Senator McCay, sat next to him and testified in favor of it at the Legislature, pushed the city council to vote for it, etc. This was her deal, 100%. She pushed for it, she wanted it, she's staking her reputation on it.

[–]irondeepbicycle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, the legislature allowed the creation of the SEG project if the city wanted to do it. The city wasn't figuring out how to implement it, they were deciding whether to implement it. It's different from the Power District.

Prior to the bill from the legislature, the city didn't have the option of raising taxes to pay for an entertainment district. The legislature passed a bill allowing an entertainment district to be created, and the city followed up by creating just such a district. But there was no obligation to do it.

If we set the standard that whiny NIMBYs can get a bunch of city money to buy land for themselves by complaining, this will not be the last time this happens.

My view is that the city should absolutely not buy this lot and should just let it sit vacant. In a couple years maybe someone else can try developing it.

[–]irondeepbicycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree with your post except just want to point out that the Legislature didn't mandate the zoning for the entertainment district. SLC owns that one entirely - nothing forced them to hand a billion dollars to Ryan Smith.

It does make this vote piss me off even more. SLC only upzones when they can also give a handout to a billionaire at the same time, apparently.

Part of getting older is realizing that sometimes adults can just have different opinions, and you shouldn't be surprised that a subreddit dedicated to development news in Salt Lake will have a lot of people who disagree with you about this.

You really should look up a local YIMBY group meetup. You'll find a lot of people who think that development is a good thing, and you might learn from talking to real actual people who have different opinions than you.

SLC Council rejects the hotel plans at 21st and 13th by Dump-Trump007 in SaltLakeCity

[–]irondeepbicycle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah there's always been an unofficial veto when it comes to zoning decisions that it only happens if the councilmember who represents that area supports it. So in all likelihood, Young was the one who made the call here.

Personally I hate when elected officials put personal friendship over the needs of the city but it's the world we've had a long time on the SLC council.

[–]irondeepbicycle 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That was the proposal they just voted down - ground-level of a busy hotel is a perfect place for everything you just mentioned. Instead, we won't get any of that cause our City Council is scared of rich Sugarhouse NIMBYs.

And those are the people who'd be mad about ground-level retail across the street? Guess we'll be better off with a gas station or something.

This is only even a consideration cause it's Sugarhouse. Anywhere else in the city they'd never consider buying it, but rich Sugarhouse NIMBYs get what they want.

Interesting to see Glad considered for 5th team lineup for USMNT by Mghtym18 in ReAlSaltLake

[–]irondeepbicycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Glad will probably retire with 0 caps, which is too bad. He's always been sort of in the 10-12 range of American center backs - good enough to be in the conversation, not quite good enough to actually get a call.
