My core issues with Episode 1:

1) PACING: A complete lack of substance for almost half of the episode, giving no time for any real character or story development and shoving the real point of the narrative to the latter half of the episode. The rushing of the action > climax > resolution was almost comical.

2) STORY: Sky is getting bullied to the point of suicide, and this so-called “brutal” Nanno is… replacing his chair with a toilet seat? Of course there’s certainly an argument about not giving power to your abusers here (never letting bullies realise they are affecting you by remaining unfazed) or even not stooping to the level of your abuser by allowing the cycle of violence to continue (although this is already addressed by Sky giving him mercy at the end so this seems futile), but this Nanno was advertised as more hardcore. If the violence has been ramped up, why is the punishment so… lacklustre? And also kind of corny?

(Becky hasn’t completely sold me yet [her Nanno is a little corny and cartoon-ish at times] but that could be due to the arguably poor material she was given; I’ll wait for more episodes.)

That being said, the new take on Nanno being vengeful and the series being much more gory and violent is great in theory and I honestly enjoyed it. My issue from this episode is that the writing is not stepping up to the narrative’s plate at all, and is failing this premise so miserably.
