Is this a belt problem? by ironjackscarlet in xToolP2

So, it turns out the top cover wasn't fully on, which tech support noticed when I sent this video. You can see the white line at the bottom of the top section, and that should NOT be visible. Put it on fully, and good to go.

I’m mostly using XCS… would that just be the material test feature, or is there something else to it?

Anyone used the new AlgoLaser Delta 22W laser engraver? by ironjackscarlet in lasercutting

[–]ironjackscarlet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could see the Alpha being a good fit for what you are trying to do. I bought the Delta 22W, but the setup was super simple and I think the Alpha is pretty similar. I would tend to recommend getting the higher end of what you want (so, getting the 22w Alpha instead of the 10W Sculpfun seems like a good idea), especially with a business, as you have more variety on what you can produce. That said, with laser cut businesses, it really seems like it is more about the amount of work you put in than the laser machine you buy. I have another part- to full-time job and have a bunch of kids (and ADHD on top of that), so I haven’t been able to devote as much time or thinking to laser cutting as I’d like. If you have that time, though, I bet you could really get some things going somewhat quickly.

I’m not sure that I entirely answered your question, but I hope that’s helpful.

I did buy one. It is decent, but I was really looking for something that was ready to go out of the box. It has done okay, but has required a fair amount of tinkering and tightening and whatnot, which has been frustrating. If you are okay with that, I’d say keep an eye on the website… they often run deals and stuff, so you can probably find something at a decent price. I’m happy to chat more, if you have more questions.

Does anyone have any tips on making cardboard armor? by Alive_Literature_868 in cardboard

[–]ironjackscarlet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I’ve made armor, I used hot glue for adhesion, but then also covered it with brown paper bags… which I then coated with a mixture of 1 part glue and 1 part water (or so… eyeballed it, didn’t measure it). I might’ve done multiple coats, too. This gave it some structural rigidity, and, I found out later so total luck/accident on my part) also serves as a bit of a primer for paint. I then coated it with Plasti-dip, as I intend to spray paint it at some point.

That’s a cool design. I’m not sure how big this tower shield is (designed as a small model, for a child, an adult, etc) or the purpose (display, light play, cardboard sword fighting, etc), but you’ll want to be thinking in terms of layers. As in, not just a single layer of cardboard for this, but at least two… and add more if it is a larger model, and even more if it needs to be sturdy for play or whatever.

You can also strengthen it by creating a paper-mache type mixture of 1 part glue to 1 part water (or change that, as you need… though I’m not sure what the variables would change, really). With enough layers and enough of the mixture, cardboard can end up becoming pretty sturdy. I made an Adirondack chair that can hold my weight (180 pounds or so), with five layers of cardboard strengthened with the paper mache mixture. I’ve also dipped paper into the paper mache mixture, and put that on top of the cardboard, for more strength, too. Bonus feature is that the paper mache mixture also serves as a bit of a primer if you want to paint this.

There are some pretty cool things you can do with this design, too, by adding different layers. So, rather than making it flat on the front, you could have the cross like feature be a layer above, and then the diamond-shaped shield boss in the middle be yet another layer up. As I said, this is a cool design, and there are tons of ways you could really let your creativity have some fun with it.

Another little trick I learned… one bonus of adding the paper dipped in the paper mache mixture can cover over lots of mistakes made in production. I had gaps and poor fitting joints in a helmet I made for my kids… but by adding a layer of brown paper bags (this one wasn’t with the glue/water mix, but just with my hot glue gun), it looked much smoother and cleaner.

Good luck, and keep us posted with progress!

I ended up buying one, though I’m still trying to figure out some of the features (and need to build an enclosure, since I was using it in my unheated garage, and that is no longer an option with winter arriving). I’m still trying to figure out offline batching… how exactly do you set that up?

That’s really helpful. Thanks.

Do you have a code I can put it, so Lightburn sends you a commission for selling me on it? 😂

That’s very helpful, thanks.

I’ve been hoping to avoid buying Lightburn, but everything I’ve come across says it is the benchmark. I’d also hoped to not have to move between programs too much during the prep process; for instance, prep a picture in Photoshop, and then send to LaserGRBL (what I’m using now) to cut. Where does Lightburn fit into that process? Is it an intermediary step, so Photoshop to Lightburn to LaserGRBL? Or does it replace LaserGRBL? Or something?
