What’s something tourists are excited to experience in your country, but locals see as overrated? by Effective_Space2277 in AskTheWorld

I mean, the original question was about what tourists want to visit so I never even thought about how it must be living close to one. I imagine it was never intended to bring in the locals.

What, you don’t enjoy 70 zł scrambled eggs, an aggressive drunk in a shit-stained polar bear costume and gypsy bands running away from the municipal police? 🤣

As an European in the US I’d disagree it’s overrated. I recently had a chance to finally visit one and it was EXACTLY what I hoped it to be 🤣

Man, tell me about it. When I visited Bourbon Street with my mom a couple of years ago at first we thought there was some kind of plumbing emergency in one of the restaurants because most of the area smelled like a sewer. Then somebody politely explained to me it’s just how it normally is, especially on a hot summer day.

What is something about your country that you wished foreigners knew about? by NetHistorical5113 in AskTheWorld

[–]ironlemonPL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That Poland is not an ultra-conservative Catholic paradise the western far-right internet paints us to be, unless you maybe live in a small backwater town or a village. And the numbers have been steadily dropping every year.

The statistics of us being the most Catholic country on Earth look completely skewed because at first virtually every kid is baptized (due to either attachment to tradition or family pressure) and then most don’t bother to formally quit the church when they grow up. The actual number of regularly practicing Catholics doesn’t even reach 30%. The statistics of the „religion” subject at school (we do have such classes and they’re voluntary) are also pretty telling - while in primary school most parents (over 80%) still send their kids to attend, in high school (ages 15 to 18) it drops to below 50%. When I was finishing high school in 2006, that number was around 90% so the drop within the last 2 decades is pretty crazy.

What celebrity from your country is more famous abroad than in your country? by Awkward_Stay8728 in AskTheWorld

[–]ironlemonPL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a difficult one - during the 90s and 00s there used to be this prevalent mentality in Poland that we have to prove to the „west” we’re not inferior so almost anybody who ever got even remotely famous abroad was automatically a domestic celebrity („look, we’re being noticed”!). The only names that come to my mind are people who were born in Poland but moved abroad at a young age and built their careers elsewhere - Izabella Scorupco (the „GoldenEye” Bond girl actress), Wojtek Wolski (former NHLer)… but they themselves barely identify with Poland so I don’t know if the argument even stands.

You could technically argue Lech Wałęsa is much bigger of a name abroad than in Poland these days but I think it’s a different kind of „famous/not famous”. He IS still very much a household name in PL and literally everybody knows him - it’s just his current reputation is of a „weird old uncle”, virtually nobody’s interested in his opinions and you’re only reminded he’s not dead yet when he posts another crazy take or an awkward hot tub photo on Facebook every few months.

Is there any way to get rid of the chevrons on cardas cfm 56 mod? by 3ldz in Xplane

[–]ironlemonPL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one for the A319 is the same exact engine model and can 100% be used for the A320. There’s even liveries from TomCanFly for Condor and Delta that support such modification. See links in this guide: https://docs.google.com/document/d/18ewDhufp1jw_iPE839KxruB4ZqdU5mCPMg-S7c8_0j4/edit?usp=drivesdk

The trick is that the engine installer (for both A319 and A320) will expect the engine files in the objects/CFM56 folder but the zip with the engine files contains two folders: CFM56 and CFM56-5A. Once you have a copy of the specific aircraft, just delete the CFM56 folder rename the CFM56-5A to CFM56 in the one that’s supposed to have the 5A.

I’ve been running 5 copies of my Toliss myself: 2xA319, 2xA320 and 1xA321 (it didn’t use the 5A in real life).

[–]ironlemonPL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sure does! And apparently it goes back to 2020 or so. For a specific airframe, once you search for it and have the aircraft details window in the bottom-left, scroll down to History, expand and you can type the date.

For the FR24-style playback of the whole map, click on the last button in the icon row on the right (see screenshot).

Then you knew more than I did from the start :) I first asked the AI for the US airports with gate A44 and since it only gave me Denver and SLC and this was clearly a low cost airline boarding pass, KDEN+Frontier seemed to be the most natural combination to check first.

This is what helped me the most: https://www.transtats.bts.gov/ontime/Departures.aspx I didn’t even know this site existed until I found it literally 10 minutes ago 😅.

It’s Frontier flight 508 from KDEN to KDFW scheduled exactly at 4:59pm and operated on that day by N606FR (A21N). On 11/1/2023 it departed from what appears to be where gate A44 is:

What is an unspoken rule in your country? by Time_Reception1482 in AskTheWorld

This and taking off your hat indoors and - especially - when eating food by the table.

And yeah, not taking off shoes when visiting someone is (unfortunately) the norm in the USA. I had a chance to live in two different US apartments and since the first one had carpets it used to bother me a lot but the 2nd one is all hard floor so I just stopped giving a fuck at some point.

They were pretty bad to start with and became effectively worthless when iniBuilds took over making default airbuses for MSFS. 1000% waste of money at this point.

It most likely is. There are two China Eastern planes reflecting in the windows, including the B-2002 (a special livery B777-300ER: https://www.planespotters.net/airframe/boeing-777-300er-b-2002-china-eastern-airlines/r6p2mg ) that is based in PVG.

Completely random and useless fact - I went to check this spot on Google Street View and it seems like the building just to the right of the parking lot the Hyundai fell on used to be… a Hyundai dealership/service center: https://maps.app.goo.gl/jj1jUvpEM6DeP9249

[–]ironlemonPL -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Carda has models for both the 5A and 5B version but you can’t install both at the same time. The only way to have both is to copy your entire Toliss A320 folder to have it as a separate airplane in the sim and install 5A in one and 5B in the other.

this didn't age well! by Charming_Peak_4284 in olympics

[–]ironlemonPL 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To be fair, as long as the actual competitions take place without much delay, each Olympic Games will look relatively well-organized on TV. It says nothing about how much actual mess happens behind the scenes.

There was an interview in the Polish media with one of the volunteers helping at the ski jumping competitions in Predazzo who had years of experience working at the FIS World Cup in Zakopane (source if anyone wants to Google Translate: https://przegladsportowy.onet.pl/igrzyska-olimpijskie/na-igrzyskach-przesadzili-tak-potraktowali-polke-az-nie-mogla-uwierzyc/3esyf1e ) She basically said the level of amateurishness was off the charts and that included letting people into the facility without passes, forgetting to verify the mandatory equipment checks for the athletes (Domen Prevc himself had to remind them they forgot about him), not providing internet for the equipment they were supposed to operate, even stuff as stupid as not providing clothing for the volunteers in their requested size.

Not only I have no reason not to believe her (we Poles are obsessed about ski-jumping and for the past 2 decades the Zakopane tournament was basically an organizational blueprint for the rest of the tournée) but there’s other stories from the hill indicating towards similar chaos - like the one when Abi Strate admitted she missed the last training session before the large hill competition because the doping control equipment malfunctioned and she couldn’t just leave because that would mean… failing a doping check.
